Ok so I had to move houses and I need to set up a wireless network, my mother went and bought a wireless router for me ( D-Link DIR 815 ) which ended up not coming with a receiver so I had to go out and drop another $100 for a compatible receiver for it.. after spending 2 hours trying to set this up, Ive managed to get it to log onto the network I setup on the router and access it from my pc in a different room but no internet is coming through. If i move stuff around stretch cords out as far as they go and plug the modem directly into my computer I can get internet no issues, however this is just impractical though as cords are stretched through the kitchen so need to be disconnected if anyone is cooking etc. I correctly set it up, looked through the help guides did some googling and its still not working although some googling did suggest people using the modem I'm using ( Speedstream 4100/4200) are having issues too, making me think that this modem could be incompatible?

 

I'm clueless and pissed off with this as I've dropped $250 on this and its just not working.. any help someone could give would be appreciated.

 

In short:

D-Link DIR815 router

+ Speedstream 4100/4200 modem

= No internet but a wireless connection

 

Edit: Ill probably just return it tommorow and get get a wireless modem-router

sounds like a routing issue. gateway ip set correctly? also, maybe the route in windows isn't being set.. type "route print" and see if you can see the ip of the gateway in it, with "default" or 0.0.0.0 as the destination.

I Noticed doing this that the Routers internet light was a solid orange, which is suppose to be its not receiving the internet signal.. And I triple checked all the settings in the router

*shouldn't* matter, but try changing the IP from 192.168.0.x in the last config to a 192.168.1.x address like in the first config. [edit] - this is for both the wifi and your PC.

 

also how is the wifi router connected to your modem?

I did try that mcdeth, it just changes the IP you put in your browser and it didn't like it and I had to do a reset.. And its connected via:

Modem - Ethernet out cable - Ethernet Internet line in on router, its the only way to plug it in..

yeah i've come across a few situs where having a number in the IP is different (the 0 and 1 in this case) can mess up a connection, even if its masked out.

 

[edit] the wifi router firewall isn't blocking anything is it?

Wouldn't think it would block the entire net connection, so id say no

the wireless AP also needs to be set to the same sub net (class C - first 3 octets the same) as it doesn't seem to be utilizing DHCP it will most likely have to be set manually

 

if it was me

 

router = 192.168.100.1

wireless ap = 192.168.100.2

workstation = 192.168.100.3

 

all set manually with the same subnet of 255.255.255.240 (or 0)

set the gateway of the AP to 192.168.100.1

set the gateway of the workstation to 192.168.100.1

 

and use the same dns servers as whats in the router

 

or if this is to difficult to achieve set both the AP and the workstation to DHCP and be sure the net router has DHCP enabled

 

whats happening is both the wireless and the router are on different subnets - they MUST be the same

DHCP Enabled - yes

Subnet of 255.255.255.0 = both

DNS are the same ( Went to transact website to make sure they were set correct manually)

what he said. i still have a feeling that the network addresses should be the same. even tho the mask should theoretically allow it to work, we're talking computers here, they love to mess with your head. set everything to the same network address and assign client numbers accordingly (could use what Spider said as a guide).

 

it looks like the wifi has dhcp enabled (judging from the 2nd screenie), that will definitely stuff things up (had a work college go off at me once because he refused to believe that dhcp is what was causing his issue and was convinced that it was something other than that even tho disabling dhcp sorted it out, then again he was never wrong about anything just ask him) try disabling that and if it wont pass the dhcp of the modem through to your PC, set your PC details manually.

just to put it out there from my experience

 

windows 7 is a pain (if that's what your using even the bloke at the computer shop said.)

dlink is also a pain from my own experience

is it the dual band one?

if it is and your receiver is dual band try connecting to the 5ghz because most thing in your house run on 2.4ghz (wireless phone, electronics such as tv, fridge, microwave ect and pretty much anything wireless) at one stage when i hung up the phone the 'hang up' disconnected the router until i changed the channel on the router.

the interference can also let you into the network but not the internet sometimes.

if you still have no luck i can try retrace my steps for setting up on windows 7 because from memory i had similar issues to you. just ask

gimme remote access ill fix it in 2 mins or you wont be charged

Just an update: i have returned it and replaced it with a modem router and its working fine now, wireless working and internet coming across it etc.. had it all setup and running then I moved the new modem back into the study where it needs to be and can't get connected to the wireless now -.- I know what it will be though and it will sort it out, so thanks all for helping, Just fixed by swapping for a modem router and eliminating the 2 devices into one
