If anyone has had any experiance with longboard bearings, I was wondering what I am better off with.

Bones reds and FLIP HKD Abec 7 Bearings are both $37.

I could spend nearly twice that and get some ceramic ones if that makes a difference.

If anyone can be bothered to do the dirty work for me and go through countless New Zealand online skate shops and find me the best ones for under $70, You will make me a happy man.

One of these. I just found out it has APEC 5 bearings at the moment.

No need to change the bearings. Wear out the ones on the board and replace them when they rust. That should take about 9-12 months, as I assume this is just for the occasional ride/cruise?

nothing wrong with abec bearings well.they used to be one of the best bang for your buck when I used to skate. just clean them regularly, being a long board you shouldn't have to worry about popping bearings. the one thing I would look for is bearings with cr rings so that you can pull them apart relatively easy. I used to clean my bearings out about once a fortnight.

 

as devil said no need to replace them just clean them and look after them and they'll keep ond going. that being said of your looking for a smoother ride considergoing some sevens. but more importantly get some soft pack wheels

give them a good clean every now and again and lube them back up

Should be good enough. Keeping them clean will significantly extend their life.

 

I had ABEC7 sized bearings in my skateboard and they were fairly nice. Two things wreck bearings.

1) Lack of lubrication

2) Crap getting into them

Over lubrication can attract foreign material into open bearings so there is obviously a balance to be struck.

 

Appropriate lubricant is pretty key - you want a fairly light weight oil. You can buy all sorts of specialised and expensive skateboard bearing oil. I always found sewing machine oil to be pretty good. Just a couple of drops per bearing should be fine.

Mobil 1 motorbike oil is good too - but unless you know someone racing bikes it wouldn't really be worth it.

 

As for cleaning - kerosine, acetone or isopropl alcohol will do fine. Even WD-40 followed by a rinse of petrol would do. Careful, all of that crap is fairly flammable.

clean with unleaded petrol ( it doesn't have the additives like the others do)

Lube with sewing machine oil or silicon lube spray should be able to get the silicon at any auto store or even kmart

Hint oil doesn't last as long as grease but oil ( finer eg sewing machine not heavy eg. motor) goes quicker.

i even seen some people use olive oil spray but i dont recommend it

Whatever you do don't spray CRC into your bearings. A foolish younger self ruined my Loaded's bearings that way

Hehe I've been longboarding since year 6, so 5 years ago, and back then I was probably the only one I knew of. Everyone had a skateboard and I was so jealous that I only had a big board that couldn't go into the pool :haha:

If I was you, I'd go for a dry based lube. Stuff like engine oil will attract dirt and dust and kill them quickly, stuff like WD-40 used as lube will just wear out after a few spins and wreck them.

 

Bike lube would probably be pretty good, I've got this spray on stuff thats good for dry conditions. Like $15 a can which is alright since you don't use that much.
