Tsunami warning for Australia & NZ

Japan Earthquake - Tsunami advisory for Australia & NZ

Hey folks...

Japan just got hit by a 8.9 earthquake which has triggered a nice big wave.

Tsanami threat advisories (ie. not quite a full warning) are now in place for New Zealand (and I have the pleasure of living right on the water)...

Spare a thought for Psyrus...

Chugga posted this in the Christchurch earthquake thread, but I figured it was worthy of its own thread.

The earthquake stuck a couple of hours ago... my big question, is how long does the tsunami take to travel half way around the world (ie. to us)?

It takes 12 hours for a plane travelling at 900kph, so I imagine it will be light at least.

Authorities in the U.S. territory of Guam said a tsunami could hit the island as early as 7:09 p.m. (4:09 a.m. ET).

Authorities in the Philippines said a tsunami could hit by 6 p.m. (5 a.m. ET).

Tsunami warning sirens sounded in Hawaii around 10 p.m. Thursday (3 a.m. ET).

No idea what time that is in NZ/Aus... sorry

Edit: It's currently Friday 11/03/11 3.39AM ET afaik

lol - the national TV broadcaster just crossed live to a Civil Defence briefing... the hippy bearded chap giving the briefing stopped talking, stepped aside, reached for his pocket (cell phone), and said.. "Oh, sorry, thats me..." and then "I hope this isn't live...".

Anyway, latest talk is that most of the energy will head west southwest of Japan (ie. toward south america), and the NZ warnings are currently only restricted to NZ Marine area... and it will be low(ish) tide when it strikes here. Either way, my buddy doesn't wanna come sailing with me tomorrow, and hopefully my phone stops beeping soon. (my friends all havin nightmares from the flooding that happened around here a month or two ago).

To answer my own timing question...

Current predictions are for any indications to be felt in NZ around 6am NZT (4am AEST). So its probably a little after midnight for your Kangaroo loving peoples.

IIRC, a tsunami wave that starts from the ocean (and nowhere near land) travels at 800km/h and gradually slows down as it nears the shore.

Well basically we're fighting a native people who was overthrown by our imperialistic government which is situated elsewhere. Our nation's desire is to maintain these various underlying colonies. In particular this form of state has multiple resistance factions which ultimately fights for an independent sovereign nation. Meanwhile we fight to eliminate their unruly resistance to our suppressive discriminatory government. Therefor and thusly, we are all stuck, in a giant, Team Deathmatch.

Wow that's the kind of stuff that makes me lose faith in humanity.

I would pay money to punch everyone of those people in the face for being so stupid.

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lihj6kJIaP1qckbtho1_500.jpg

This is Hideaki Akaiwa. When the Tsunami hit his home town of Ishinomaki, Hideaki was at work. Realising his wife was trapped in their home, he ignored the advice of professionals, who told him to wait for the army to arrive to provide search and rescue.

Instead he found some scuba gear, jumped in the raging torrent - dodging cars, houses and other debris being dragged around by the powerful current, any of which could have killed him instantly - and navigated the now submerged streets in pitch dark, freezing water until he found his house. Swimming inside, he discovered his wife alive on the upper level with only a small amount of breathing room, and sharing his respirator, pulled her out to safety.

If he had waited for the army, his wife of 20 years would be dead.

Oh, and if that’s not enough badassery for one lifetime, Hideaki realised his mother was also unaccounted for, so jumped back in the water and managed to save her life also. Since then Hideaki enters the water everyday on a one man search and rescue mission, saving countless lives and proving that two natural disasters in a single day - and insurmountable odds - can’t stand in the way of love. This man is my hero.
