7.4 magnitude Earthquake hits Christchurch

 

Hi everyone,

Just to let you all know that a 7.4 magnitude earthquake has hit Christchurch and that is was big it was only 30km west and only a shallow 33km down. I live about 26km away but we still felt it it sounded like twelve 747 jets flying over and that is was massive and most of the damage was in Christchurch power out, buildings down and it wasn't nice. The reason for the is that everything shook and I was so scary there was nothing to describe it but very big but there is going be a big cost to fix up.:scare2:

Yeah its not so pretty anymore, center of town is pretty poo'ed. Most of the older buildings have taken structural damage and lost walls etc.

Oh wow, sorry to hear that.

 

I've only felt one earthquake and it was back home on a day I was still in bed skipping school. Tiny little thing.

I read some road damage and some looting of some damaged shops but theres bad structural damage?

Few pick's there. They have warned everyone to stay away from old buildings as they dont know how well they will hold up.

Been watching the news all morning and it has now been degraded back to a 7.1 magnitude quake but we are still getting aftershocks now.

They warned people to stay away from the central city - naturally I went to check it out.

Was pretty amazing on Manchester St - there was one particular building which had been cascaded (2 story brick) across the street crushing a car.

 

Most of it looked fine though, some of the older buildings at the harbour are pretty buggered (London st Pub).

 

I was up when it happened and it was similar to walking on shifting sands!

Just got power back - sewage is probably going to take another day or two.

Only two people are injured atm, that's pretty lucky if ya ask me

Is it known if anyone was injured yet? Some of the pics floating around the web make it look pretty serious.

didn't realize we had so many Christchurch peeps in Big D. After the first shock i just went back to sleep still got power and water down in Sumner so we are alright

Wow, glad to see it didnt turn into a major disaster.

 

That said i can now voice something i've always wondered when i hear about earthquakes. I wonder if someone, or two someones to be exact, would actually have been engaged in the...you know...having a shag. And i wonder what they hell they would be thinking when they felt the earthquake? This happened early hours of saturday morning...the chances must have been kinda good.....

 

Anyways, i should travel the ditch one day and check out NZ, its something i've always wanted to do...I want to see the little town where they filmed Bad Taste.

Checking in. all good now still after shocks going on which give u a fright now and then haha.

 

Main shock was interesting was still half asleep when i found my self crawling under my bed. woke up thought bugger the bed i'm going for the door way, running in an earth quake is an interesting experience haha

 

Just got power back 2 hours ago so the lines boys are working hard plan to have 90% of the city back online by nightfall

 

Our concrete cracked down stairs a few plates an vases got smashed and our bloody fridge fell over food every where hahah the pits other then that not much more damage lucky really.

 

We should hopefully have running water within 2 - 3 working days so no flushing... army is on stand by for aid i believe

 

been pretty wild experience im so glad no one in our city has died and i hope the injured are ok

 

any way if any thing more happens ill keep ya posted

Is the Airport still closed ?, my Mum was supposed to be flying back from CHCH today.

All of my Rallies are in CHCH as well..but they are all apparently fine.

Looks like the place held up pretty well all things considered

Saw this on CNN lastnight at about 330am, US Geo survey said it was 7.4.

 

I tried to tell Buzzard but he didn't seem too phased lol. Hope it clears up.
