Is PR educational?

Hello Everybody! :hi:

I was just thinking if PR in anyway could help my English

listening and speaking skills....or maybe my grammar, vocab...

Formal Eng or Informal Eng doesn't really matter

Stress Stress Stress always trying to get a higher TOEFL and SAT score...

I do study them regularly but I can't study 24/7; I need to take a rest at some point. So I play PR during my break time.

Would Playing PR Improve My English? Or Would PR Make My English Worse?

Any Advice Would Be Appreciated.

Thank you :guitar:

As an ESL teacher I can say that it will marginally improve your english, specifically your listening skills. Unfortunately though, the breadth of exposure to new vocabulary and 'proper' english will be limited (at best) when playing PR, as there are rather standardized terms used during your average round of PR. I can't think of many better ways to comfortably interact (verbally) with a variety of people than through online gaming... and most PR players are quite mature and thus you get less smack talk and more meaningful 'conversation'.

Teamspeak can be good for random chats... catch krazzyb on a good night and he'll captivate you with his many entertaining tales - Or he'll drive you into a burning apc... seemingly out of spite :p

I certainly wouldn't assume that PR could make your english worse... except for perhaps tone and abruptness, as whilst playing giving longwinded orders can get confusing and is superfluous when a simple 'go to X and do Y' will suffice.

Finally, since my students couldn't use it this week (their level isn't quite up to scratch), perhaps you'd enjoy a read through this article off the BBC, which I found very interesting and the word choice is excellent.. ~40 good vocab words there. It was going to be a 2 hour lesson on the subject matter (and vocab) but at the end I decided against it and went for something a little easier, as the elderly students already struggle with the content that I deem to be easy... and this would've lost their attention completely.

Also... isn't it TOEFL ;)?

Edit: To answer the question in the title of the thread...

I'd say PR can be quite educational, but like most things in life, you only get out what you put in. I've learned heaps about various weapons/ammo, vehicles, basic tactics from guides posted here & RM.com, I've become more confident in myself as a leader (not only in games, I now take the helm in most RL project situations as well, for most of uni as well), I've learned that sometimes you just have to let things go... despite how wrong you might believe everyone else is  (I lol'd to myself this fortnight @ 3 different people who voted 'allow' ranting over team chat on insurgency games about unknown spawners ^_^), and PR allows us to see that not every game has to be about killstreaks, achievements, stats, pretty graphics, consoles etc etc etc

QFT: Your computer is smart man. It tells you not to play the second worst PR map [burning Sands] (first is Wanda Shan).

QFT: if you dont get pissed off when you lose you dont care enough

If you're lucky enough to get in a squad with a member who can't learn to stop talking, than it may help a bit more than your average round.

Its educational for young kids to learn how to swear and abuse each oher.

Don't use [the] forums to improve your English though, that can only end badly

You did really well for the rest of it though, I was particularly impressed by your understanding of the difference between "your" and the contraction "you're"... it seems to escape the majority of the populace.

why is it so hard for some

The most cited reason (from my findings) is that they sound 'the same' when said [verbally] (which they don't... if you say them correctly). Lacklustre education system rates as a close #2.

i dont know why people are so caught up on changing the english language, seeing as it has always been changing and evolving, b ut for some reason now its off limits.

We have plenty of words with multiple meanings, so why not just make your = you´re, its the context which gives the meaning, not how you spell it. The other big one i really hate is saying "Sam and I went to the shops", when most people now would say "me and sam went to the shops", which flows much better and it is generally what most of the extra words in english are there for.

I know my english is bad, but as long as i can communicate my ideas, its good enough for me...but let the flames begin.

OT...sort of...i have found PR a very good tool for leadership skills, as psyrus said before.

Noddy´s Awesomeness = HAPPY GEK :D

whilst avoiding the swear filter, teaching one to become throughly insulting with some degree of tact, here here!

just don't join any =DI= squads with Chalice in them, you'll learn a whole new way to Violate the English language. also avoid squads with KJL51, or Dammit, or doughnut, actually just avoid any DI squads, Those guys are filth, and they're usually drunk.

The amount of military stuff I can rant about/name has increased very very dramatically since I started playing PR.

Thats sorta educational...

DON'T YOU CLUCK WITH ME, BUDDY!

After that night I started peeing out the window to avoid going down the hallway when it was dark.

Most squads on the BigD PR servers these days will have a chat amongst themselves.

Last night was a good example on Fallujah, myself and [hsv] Eddie_Warrior were attacking a cache and once we came into contact, I called for cease of talks and called in direct fire support within 50m of my current LOC.

In my opinion, just jump in a Squad and have a chat with the people that are in there. Nothing ever hurts just talking.

Next time you watch a "respectable" news network you'll see how PR is teaching adolescents to attack cities and commit suicide bombings

and if your still in school and doing modern history, if a teacher asks the class what types of weapons someone uses, you can get excited and throw your hand in the air :D

Well basically we're fighting a native people who was overthrown by our imperialistic government which is situated elsewhere. Our nation's desire is to maintain these various underlying colonies. In particular this form of state has multiple resistance factions which ultimately fights for an independent sovereign nation. Meanwhile we fight to eliminate their unruly resistance to our suppressive discriminatory government. Therefor and thusly, we are all stuck, in a giant, Team Deathmatch.

I've actually started using compass bearings when trying to describe the locations of items to friends or family. Not intentionally of course.

Yesterday for example, me and a few mates were looking for another mate, I told them that he was "North east" of the slide.........

I didn't even think twice about it until they looked at me like I'm a goose, which I am, but that is besides the point.

HAHA that's a great video there Psyrus. Exactly the sort of over-exuberant thing I'd be caught doing in an APC. Classic.

As for educational - sure, it can teach you the power of a working team and clear communication. Building an entire firebase in two minutes by yourself with only shovel and a supply crate is perhaps less 'informative' of real life though. :)

My class at the best of times in our modern histroy classes... As we would talk about anythink to do with histroy... even if it was not on the topic...

Anyways.. PR.... Have anyone tried to fly a chopper after putting in 200 hours of flying in pr?

well its also educational for when you want to be hit by flying inatimate objects flying through the air

Sorry to break it to you but unless you get her a Wii and convert her to casual gaming... there is no way to reason a parent into believing that gaming is beneficial (because it is a leisure activity).

Buy an expensive headset, then every time she hits you on the head, you can tell her that she's breaking it.
