I Was Wondering If Someone Could Point Me In The Direction Of Any Good Video Cameras ?

Do I Need To Look For Anything Special ?

 

I Need A Video Camera That Can Be Used For Mostly Fast Moving Motion And To Be Able To Take Still Pictures, It Will Also Need A Good Zoom.

 

Budget $0 - 700

 

I've Been Looking At The Ones In Store But Haven't Got A Clue.

Go HD bro. If you dont you will regret it. The smallest HD cams can be get now for under 500. 900 gets a solid cam.

 

I've seen lots of bargains in the boxing day sales. Best bet would be to get a good Sony HD for the cheapest price..like this one....

He's been doing it a while now. We snapped him out of the habit for like 3 words once.

I would agree with Charger's recommendation. I have the top of the range Sony (550). I still haven't run out of HD space after alomst 1 year, so the smaller drive capacity cameras will be fine.

 

I chose the sony for the low light capability. I have used several cameras in the past, but ran with the sony for it's low light capability which is essential IMO. If you only plan on doing day shots, there will probably be other cameras for a cheaper price, but if you want something that will capture your night party/family shots, then the sony is the way to go.

 

Anti shake feature is supposed to be ok to, not that I have noticed, as I have it on permanently and don't know the difference. But I'm sure it has an effect when I am chasing the kids.

 

So best bang for buck, would be Chargers recomended camera. Even better get yourself a playstation and you can use it as a media centre and run the videos natively (for the AVCHD orwhateveritscalled format). PM me for more advise when I'm more sober.

 

EDIT : re read your original post. Still photos are great as well. can take them on the fly whilst recording video. It will also (on my model, not sure on others) take photos automatically when people are smiling, auto focuses on faces and detects when they are smiling. Kinda nice to have a whole heap of photos with people smiling after several hours of video recording. I would suggest quality is on par with my SLR.

I bought a mid-range JVC about a year ago. Was really disappointed in it after about 3 hours of filming. Still photos look like they have an exposure time of an hour and the film side of it isn't as good as I expected.

I took heaps of stills tonight on a $100 camera off 1 day and I could have more lols off those photos than a funny site. Cheap is only nasty if you actually know what your supposed to care about.

I have used a JVC before and didnt like it.

 

The better the lens the better the camera. The seig thingy's on sony's is a goodish lens.

 

Also traditionally the longer the cam the better the quality of picture. I mean front to back length. You will see the professional stuff is all quite long.

 

 

 

And High Def rules.

Bought a JVC HDD camcorder, quality is okay, but i'd avoid a HDD one like the plague! Not only is your battery life about as long as a goldfishes memory, if there is even the slightest vibration it'll stop recording. missed out on the entire flight in a tiger moth due to that, well it did capture the taxi, takeoff and approach, but the actual flight was all gone.

 

get a hd one that records to SD, battery life much better and you avoid the vibration issues

A lot of wank/marketing hype about photographic and video gear. Read as many reviews as you can is my advice.

for all but the zoom bit... the GoPro HD is pretty good... had my eye on it for a while... but I am looking for something to attach to the 4WD to film tracks etc...

Pretty good for POV action shots & has pretty good stills as well... as I said.. no zoom though.

I use a Sony Cybershot DSC-M1. Its a very good camcorder for the price, and it also takes stills.

The hassle you have with what you are looking for is your trying to get a camera to do too many things, So you are not going to be exceptionally happy with everything the camera can do.

 

HD is certainly the best option in regards to camera choice, it leads to larger lenses, faster sensors and as a result increased capture quality. The downside with most HD video cameras, as due to the lenses and the image quality, the amount of zoom available is reduced. when looking at zoom you have to be careful, remember there is a big difference between Digital and Optical.

 

In regards to still images, most HD Cameras will have decent quality images, just remember that your colours are not going to be as good as using a proper still camera as the sensor was never intended for the use.

 

In regards to SD versus HDD. The HDD that are now in these cameras have both inertial protection, and drop protection. But these will only kick in when something major happens. You have to remeber if you go SD that cards are going to be expensive to match the HDD space.

 

Hope that helps. Brand wise i would choose Panasonic or jvc, have had the best success with these brands.

yeah for highly compact action camera the gopro is great.. have one myself

but there is no zoom, no on the go playback & not even a view finder... but the quality is awesome and its completely sealed.
