Airshow 2010 Williamstown

here are some pics i took at the airshow yesterday.

last public display of the F -111

The guy from northgrup gruman reckons the F-111 is still a superior aircraft compared to the new batch however:-

F-111

low level bomber

high airframe stress rates

high fuel usage due to low level usage

higher exposure to AA & Flak

100 man hours for every 1 hour of flight time

the steath F-22 & F-35

45000 feet bomb anything

low airframe stress due & longer life span

at 45k feet minimal fuel consuption

pretty much undetected by AA

10 man hours for every 1 hour of flight.

anyhow it was a cracking good show.

relatively low to nil radar exposure

all the above are true, but majority of the above factors against the Pig are due to its main modus operandi being a nap of the earth fighter/bomber. pretty much any of those would go across any aircraft thats main mode of attack is hugging trees.

[edit] - top pics by the way love the old warbirds (o: :plane:

amazing enough is that the mustang has a top speed of 810 kph were as the mackie jet has a top speed of only about 700kph.

notice the fa-18 in the last photo is a wing commanders as the tail is painted coloured where the others are all plain.

to tell the difference between a hornet & a super hornet is that the super has squared air intakes & the hornet has rounded intakes.

enjoy!!

ps thanks guys for the photo advice.

plus the SF has much larger strakes (iirc thats the right term) over the inlets than the vanilla hornet

enjoy!!

i did mate, loved the shots of the Sabre and Spitfire, would love to fly either of those babies (o:

Thanks for the pictures mate, some truly good ones in there.

Notice they holes in the back of the PC3? Are they for flares or sonobuoys (or something like that?)

And I didn't know they had any Neptunes still flying... I thought they were all on permanent static display outside Townsville RAAF base.

sonobuoys

i know there was one being restored out at Perth Airport an age ago (was in high skewl then) that was the same colour as that one. Think they were wanting to convert it to a firebomber but couldn't get funds from the Govt to do so or something like that.

good pickup when they were flying around they were only on 3 engines & everyone is thinking WTF are they doing & then when they were near the end they started it.

also they were doing some pretty tight turns for such a big machine so maybe that helped with the turning???

engine out doesn't affect turn radius, only yaw authority. the speed of which the aircraft is travelling and amount of G it is pulling will determine ultimately the turn radius. Just remember, the higher the wing loading in the turn (read g-force pulled), the higher the stall speed of the wing - accelerated stall.

Apply this to a real situation. The aircraft is trapped in a valley in poor wx conditions, the pilot should slow down the aircraft to a safe maneuvering speed (a speed with enough margin above the stall speed - especially in the turn as you can get an accelerated stall). The pilot stations himself on one side of the valley wall, slows the aircraft down and makes a tight turn inside the opposite wall and flies away.
