Hi everyone, I was recently thinking about donating money towards the site/community, however I was just wondering where this money actually goes?

 

So I suppose this is directed towards the admins (with no malice intended), and I hope you can answer these questions:

 

Do you pay for both of the servers, and how much do they cost?

If you are paying for them, have you considered trying a new provider

(e.g. Internode)

How much does the forum cost annualy?

On the right of the Homepage, above the calendar. That's all I know, I haven't donated myself primarily because I can't afford it.

Donating as soon as I get paypal tbh.

 

Jestar, the donations go to the running of the servers, forums and TS.

The servers for example use an absolutely stupid amount of bandwidth from what I've been told so I guess they aren't cheap.

 

Btw I doubt GoN would take on a PR server again unless it was guaranteed that it would be used, their last server died and they're trying to cut costs as it is.

Yeah for a PR server you're generally looking at about $120-200 depending on how flexible you want your host to be, and GAU is very flexible with us

 

That being said, this very situation is one of many examples of why I so staunchly support(ed) the NBN rollout. With 1TB plans from iiNet, and say a 25/25 mbps connection (actually I believe 10/10 would do, but I prefer 25/25), I would happily host the bigD servers

 

That post in the link by Ford does intrigue me though... why would you use a 4xCPU server dedicated to a game that only runs 2x single threaded BF2 servers (used to be 3 I suppose) when only one is used at any given point?

I'd take stable servers before functioning battle recorder.

Jester this is how I understand the current system runs. Currently the servers (Gameservers, TS - Not sure about forums) are hosted by GAU (GAMING AU) now this is similar to the previous hoster GSA (Gaming SA - Adam Internet) however GSA was an ISP, GAU is just a community similar to BigD.

The benfits of being with GSA was that they provided these servers as they where a benefit for thier customers and advertising. GAU on the other hand provide these without getting much benefit from it so they have very minimal financial gain from it.

 

In summary GSA run them because it was beneficial for them too but GAU only run them because they can and these donations go onto them so that the servers have more of a chance to stay up because they aren't costing as much (Hopefully covering all costs so we are effectively paying for the servers, with no guarantees, I doubt $200 a month covers the running costs without a very efficient setup).

 

Correct me if I am wrong?

That's pretty well spot on Poncho.

 

Richard donates one server and the bandwidth because he's a nice bloke.

 

JW clan provide another server because they are nice blokes.

 

The forums have been funded by individuals within the community without asking for donations in the past.

 

If we went to another provider we would be highly unlikely to be given the same level of access to the servers.

 

Donations are voluntary. It was put to me in TS that there was some suspicion that the money went to some admin slush fund which is laughable and bordering insulting to be honest.

What, you mean the admins don't have some sort of Scrooge McDuck-esque pile of money that they swim around in, and then all get into a locked channel in TS and gloat about it?

Oh we do... it doesn't come from donations tho.... we have a sponsorship deal with US which pays us 1c for every cache which is destroyed

The donations are passed on to GAU for the servers, TS and the large amount of Bandwidth PR chews through..the exact amount varies (BW) but it works out to approx $600 worth a month (thats what the owner of GAU, Richard, could get for it if it was used for other things...).

We also use it to pay for the hosting of the forums which is about $80 a year.

Before the donations system was put in place this was paid for by the admins in a "pass the hat "manner.

As for the suggestion we pocket it....perhaps people should check to see who donates http://www.bigdgaming.net/misc.php?do=donlist, Not only do we spend our time and bandwidth running the show, we also donate regularly to the upkeep of the server that YOU ALL play on.

 

Heres the Donation list from GAU as well, as you can see we pay our way as far as the servers which we have full control and access to goes..

Well I suppose a plus side to the server numbers being way down is that we aren't running up huge bills over gau side :sweat:

GAU regulars, from other games.

They do host other servers apart from ours... .

We NEED a sponsor.....should hit up Woodstock and Jim Beam.....amount of money i've spent with them whilst playing this game is stupid...they owe yas:) I must admit, i feel a little embarassed/ashamed of my years of Hack cheat comments, after seeing the list of donors.....considering most of them are paying for it....its there right to be hack cheats i say:) (tounge in cheek..lol) but seriously, last time i donated (first time to anyone really) he was getting a new computer so he could play P.R. where the hell has that guy gone huh? (think he was N/A too??) BUT i will keep the site in mind next time i do my bill paying:)

 

EDIT: I should point out the donation was in NO way related to the site or admins and running of the servers. I pay Noddy in sexual favours for that;)

Noddy and Rooter certainly should, considering their admin contributions plus their respective 15.8% and 14.59% contributions to the total donations thus far (30% of all donations came from just two of them).

 

On a positive note, AllYourBase's contribution has raised the donating % of active forum members to an all time high of 8.01% (29 donors of 362 'active' forum participants, although many of the active forum participants don't play PR much/ever anymore so I wouldn't begrudge them for not feeling the need to donate).

Even so, as somebody said in another thread, BF2 cost me $20 bucks on eBay, and I've played almost nothing else (multiplayer) except PR for 18 months straight. I felt like I should give something back

Please don't single me out for special mention.... There are plenty of other people who donate just as consistently like Bobsky, Whitey304 and Psyrus. :thumbsup: also to the people who donate whenever they have a couple of bucks to spare - Shady will attest that going without that buddy of coke that one time didn't hurt at all I'm sure
