Posted August 2, 201014 yr Has anyone else found that the tax refund processing by the ATO is significantly slower this year ? The last time I did E-Tax I had my return sorted in around 6 days. Their website says that on average E-Tax returns will be completed within 14 days. I phoned the automated system and it told me in no uncertain terms not to phone before 30 days. I am at almost 3 weeks after lodging E-Tax. I have heard reports from other people that their return is slower this year. ATO installed a new computer system recently to streamline things... http://www.taxinstitute.com.au/news/more-on-refunds-and-ato-processing http://www.reynoldssissoev.com.au/blog/taxation/ato_processing_of_tax_returns_still_extremely_slow http://www.smartcompany.com.au/tax/20100416-tax-office-posts-140-000-tax-refund-letters-but-fails-to-send-the-cheques.html http://www.abc.net.au/pm/content/2010/s2872974.htm I desperately need my tax return this year. Is anyone else experiencing this or has information about it ? Edited August 2, 201014 yr by mandatory05 "When you have to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite." - Winston Churchill
August 2, 201014 yr Yeah it sucks hard. My mother put in for 'Financial hardship' and it still took them over a month to process. Mine is also 3 weeks. I guess we'll get it when it comes. :S http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t136/varan92/sc_ii_2.png

I have read that this year businesses are laying off staff, people are having to cancel surgery, all because of this. "When you have to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite." - Winston Churchill

August 2, 201014 yr I sent a bank cheque to the ATO for $1900, they will admit they got it, but are unsure of where it is...meanwhile while I still get nasty letters from their collections Dept asking for payment of the afore mentioned $1900. What we have here is. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9VhD4SccSE]Failure to communicate[/ame] Cie la vie... http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee118/bahlye/bahlye007/mouse_zps73307fb2.gif
August 2, 201014 yr Author The new system seems to have cost between $746 million and $880 million dollars... depending on where you get the quote. I am sure there are other quotes. It's wonderful that they have managed to ensure that uncomplicated tax returns are handled swiftly. That is what they did anyway previously. Just now - every other tax return is taking longer. People rely on that money. Tax returns are for the most part not uncomplicated, though. It's really a savage waste of money to install such a system that inconveniences so many people. I need that money. Forum threads on the issue at Whirlpool, part 5 (!) http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1499859 On this information: On the other hand: http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2010/08/2010-tax-refunds-on-track-so-far/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+LifehackerAustralia+%28Lifehacker+Australia%29&utm_content=Google+Reader I think that is spin. The comments are mainly positive on the new system but as it is a moderated forum they may just prefer it that way. Perhaps those of us with something to complain about are just making a big fuss. It will be interesting to see what the situation is for everyone in another month. August 3, 201014 yr So is this a new system implemented this year? If so... coming from a CS degree I can assure you that unforeseen issues will sometimes only manifest at deployment... you can white/blackbox test things till you're blue in the face, but only with real world input will your bug/oversight present itself. The issue is that you've now got a whole bunch of people relying on your system and you have to make the decision... is the issue significant enough that the system is taken down until the bug is fixed (probably unacceptable with 2 million+ tax returns to do) or just deal with the issue on an individual basis with the % that it affects. Sucks for that % though... I hope your returns come in swiftly, especially if you're depending on it. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. August 13, 201014 yr Author Hey. I just got back from a week in Sydney. My tax return came into my account the day before I left (just a few days short of a month after lodging it). Awesome timing as the day after I left was my daughter's first birthday (i.e. why I was going to Sydney in the first place).
