Posted April 30, 201014 yr I use a DSL 502-T which has served me well and works fine. Someone gave me a 2701HGV-W Bigpond-branded modem. Is it worth using the new one ? _ _ _ _ _ _ _ edit: The new one seems to have facilities for plugging multiple PCs into the connection (I currently only have one PC). I was hoping a boffin might know the value of the new one to me. Edited April 30, 201014 yr by mandatory05 "When you have to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite." - Winston Churchill
April 30, 201014 yr I don't know much to tell you other than give it a shot. I had no idea how much of a difference they can make to internet speed until I bought a new one last week. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. April 30, 201014 yr Well the advantages to having a router/modem rather than just a modem are [roughly]: - Ability to add in more PCs without buying a separate switch/hub/router - NAT and inbuilt firewalls which mean aside from non-standard ports, you don't really have to block anything manually with a software firewall on your PC - Higher end models can do inbuilt voip and such so that you can set yourself up with cheap phone calls, if you're into that sort of thing - You can set up QoS so that say your gaming packets get higher priority than your bittorrent download that is happening concurrently - Some of them have DYNDNS capabilities so that you can run a server off a dynamic IP without extra software That's all i can think of for now, but the NAT/Hardware firewall are the only real benefits to someone using only 1 PC, oh and plus DLINK products are notoriously shoddy http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. April 30, 201014 yr I still have to figure out how to set mine up right. I got it working so far and that's it. None of the extras are activated. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. April 30, 201014 yr Its a 2wire(brand) 4 port + wireless router. They're very good at holding sync on noisy or long lines. If you want wireless as well then yay if you need a way to network some extra pc at home then yay. Want to use an old xbox as a mediacentre pc in the lounge and have net access from there then yay. Otherwise meh . Free is free though. The hardware itself is good but the telstra firmware is a bit hobbled. There are ways and means to get past the deliberate Telstra fiddlings in its firmware . All the features are still there and functional just need to access them differently. :hi:

They are unlockable , try this or look further in whirlpool or the like. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=808533 "10.0.0.138/mdc" seems to be the main thing just dont blame me if you stuff it. :hi: Edited April 30, 201014 yr by Shifty.au

What is your budget for your new modem, as there are a heap of good options out there, but it depends on the hip pocket as to which one to go for. But my brand preference would be linksys, have had the best luck with there products, and if you have the cash to do so you can get commercial grade linksys or cisco products that are fantastic.
January 5, 201114 yr get a modem like mine buzz, always seems to work.. Billion 7300GRA is the one i have, but newer models have come out Asset Whoring Since Version 0.85 http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/431/notoassest.png
January 6, 201114 yr I have a dynalink RTA1025W - best modem I've ever had. There's a newer version (rev2) out now. Four ethernet ports, easy setup etc. Not sure about shipping to NZ, but I always buy ADSL gear from Cormain http://www.cormain.com.au/ as they service Whirlpool very well. Maybe grab one of these if you're budget is high? http://www.internode.on.net/products/fritzbox/ Does everything except for building FOBs so your PR team wins. January 6, 201114 yr personally i use cisco but generally try and sell netcomm to clients, of the hundreds sold in the last few years only 2 have been replaced (both of which were 4+ year old first addition nb5's) m00
January 6, 201114 yr I have/had 2 netcomms. The first was an NB5Plus4W which has 4 ethernet ports + decent wifi. That lasted quite a few years indeed, until I was taking my laptop to the other room and a cable snagged and pulled it off the desk and it shattered (the plastic was really brittle from so many 30+ days). But I taped it back up and it worked for the rest of the day until there was a problem at the exhanges end and Voice2net bloke came around and plugged in a new one which had the same problem. But we ended up keeping it and it works fine now, it runs heaps cooler than the old one. NB6Plus4W http://i.imgur.com/DtNdckc.png [WC]Xavo|xXx:
January 6, 201114 yr personally i use cisco but generally try and sell netcomm to clients, of the hundreds sold in the last few years only 2 have been replaced (both of which were 4+ year old first addition nb5's) I had a netcomm N3G before this. Was one of those 3g wireless modems you plug the usb dongle into. Had heaps of issues with it just restarting the dongle when I was gaming etc - till the new firmware came out. After that it wasn't a bad router. I currently have a Billion BIPAC 7800N. Seems to handle everything well. Evil Shenanigans!
January 6, 201114 yr Billion BIPAC 7800N Looks Like I Might Get This Must Say It Has Everything I'll Ever Need Is It Ok For Hosting Games And Stuff, e.g. Has Anyone Ever Hosted A Arma 2 Game With It Can People Actually Connect ? Any Good Stores To Buy From ? NZ Has Nothing Its Useless Edited January 6, 201114 yr by Leviathan010 http://www.users.on.net/~beljas/sigs/buzzard.png
January 6, 201114 yr I can't really answer that. I can't say that I've hosted games before so I don't know what is involved/required for it I've bought a bit of stuff through these guys, have had really good experiences with them. Just not sure how they go with international shipping. They are $5 AUS more expensive than other sellers on ebay but I know what I will get at the end of the day from them. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Billion-BiPAC-7800N-802-11n-ADSL2-Broadband-Firewa-/160527982632?pt=AU_Networking&hash=item256036a028 Evil Shenanigans!
