April 29, 201014 yr I'm looking for shut down work. I'm a scaffolder, I can lift heavy stuff and move it over there. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. April 29, 201014 yr I'll be looking for work in about a year n a bit myself. Altho i may be moving up to Gero/Chapman Valley area so while Perth would be nice, may have to rethink my thoughts re jobs etc... There comes a time in every musician's life when they must decide what instrument they should master. Few. If any are ever worthy enough to master. The cowbell.
April 29, 201014 yr Smoke - If you are OK moving around state think there is likely plenty of shutdown work for a scaffolder. Woodside have a LOT of these over next couple of years in Karratha and most mining companies would be similar though to lesser degree. Likely fly in/out. Woodside, like a number of other companies deal with specific provider companies to pull together shutdown staff. Could ring the main Woodside number and say what you are interested in and they will tell you who to call or put you through to someone for next steps. Probably helps if you have the right tickets, etc though suspect you could get them through the company if you were keen. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
April 29, 201014 yr I've not thought of calling Woodside directly. I've been a company sl*t mostly. Right now I'm with Phoenix Shutdown and so far so good. I should be going on my second with them this weekend. I hope they can keep me in work as I like them so far and the crew is good which to me is important especially being in the green stage still. I don't argue and just do what I'm told. No clue why so many guys get all worked up at safety officers and bosses. We get paid damn good money just shut up and do it their way even if it does take longer. We get paid by the hour after all and if it adds a day so be it. More in my pocket and no one is dead so I like it their way. Still though, I'm always looking. You have to in this game. Worst thing though is I just finally got in and now my missus may take a transfer to Queensland which may mean I have to start over again...... bummer I'll call around and see who wouldn't mind flying me from Townsville. What do you do? I have loads of tickets. Advance Scaf Dogman Man and Materials Hoist EWP Forklift/telescoping HR truck confined space working at heights Senior First Aid Miners Health Surveillance I even have my stupid lolipop ticket just in case and a few other minor ones. BHP Nickel West Inducted Rio General Induction Plus I'm off to Boddington this weekend. Dude, we should meet for a beer sometime. Sounds like you've been in the game awhile I love stories. April 29, 201014 yr Nice Idea Sandy. I'd be curious if there are many/any bigD'rs working in the mines, specifically as Electricians/Elec Engys or similar trades? (Auto's etc..). Just thinking future prospects. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy213/Frenzal/ANZ.png
April 29, 201014 yr The WA boom is coming along again. If you have a trade just apply apply apply until you get a foot in. It's hard to get into but once you have one on your CV your in. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. Altho i may be moving up to Gero/Chapman Valley area so while Perth would be nice, may have to rethink my thoughts re jobs etc... Jobs are not hard to come by up here. Mining is still the way though. Or if Oakajee port goes ahead you won't be hard pressed to find labour work. Here is a list of particularly awesome things: dogs sniping very spicy chilli cat claws on people (but still cool on cats)
April 29, 201014 yr hay just asking how old do u have to be to get a trade in diesel mechanic About as old as it takes to leave school? To start your training anyways I guess. Here is a list of particularly awesome things: dogs sniping very spicy chilli cat claws on people (but still cool on cats)
April 29, 201014 yr hay just asking how old do u have to be to get a trade in diesel mechanic Diesel Fitter. Depends on what you want to work on. Highway trucks (small workshops) you can generally find an apprenticeship/traineeship from 16 (in Queensland) as they struggle to compete with the wages of the mines. A lot of mining companies generally prefer Yr 12/senior certificate before they even look at an application. Be aware that doing your trade on highway trucks qualifies you as a diesel fitter but mining has a lot more involved hydraulic systems that you won't see. I'd be curious if there are many/any bigD'rs working in the mines, specifically as Electricians/Elec Engys or similar trades? (Auto's etc..). Just thinking future prospects. Auto-Elec in the mines currently and considering doing HV. Edited April 29, 201014 yr by rohan11221 Evil Shenanigans!
April 29, 201014 yr hay just asking how old do u have to be to get a trade in diesel mechanic I reccomend going to the army, navy or airforce to get your diesel mechanic training
April 30, 201014 yr So Nuff are you an auto electrician by trade or are you an electrician working on mining vehicles? Where abouts and what sort of work are you doing with mining? (overhauls, long wall, trucks, carts etc...)? If you don't mind me asking. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy213/Frenzal/ANZ.png

(overhauls, long wall, trucks, carts etc...)? If you don't mind me asking. Yeah bud, auto sparky by trade. I'm based out of rocky which sees a lot of sites within 2.5hrs drive. Currently doing full-lifes (customer dictated) on 797's which is mostly Air/Con and diesel fitting with some 'lecy work at the end before they get returned to site. Which is good if you're into a bit of mechanical work as well. Have done a bit of everything from new equipment fitouts, breakdowns, repairs and overhauls (full-lifes and mid-lifes). It's a great experience and the pay is awesome. Evil Shenanigans!
April 30, 201014 yr Mining is the way to go for pay and experience. Everything else you do after will seem easy. Ooohhh an 8 hour day and weekends off oh noes! Even if you are an office worker there are many on site jobs with kick ass pay. My missus got into HR this way. They always need computer skills plus those big companies look fantastic on a CV. April 30, 201014 yr Walked into the local car dealership today. I told the dealer principal that his service manager was an oxygen thief; my vehicle has been off the road since xmas eve due to a warranty repair that failed and that they keep on putting off fixing it even though they're getting paid to do it by the original repairer. Was offered the job of Service Manger on the spot, I brushed off the comment. When I picked up a 'lend car' I asked the Dealer Principal if he was serious and I was told that the position was 'open'. 52k pa plus commission which I was told was going to push that up to 80k-90k ****s all over my current job as an 4th aircraft maintenance engineer apprentice on 30k pa. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v390/pennywise_pw/pennywiseevilfun.png -Evi|. My brother in law went over to WA mining as an IT Tech (his expertise) and within 3 months was driving dump trucks for twice the money and no experience. Just have to get your foot in the door apparently!
April 30, 201014 yr Yep, that's exactly how it works. I tried and tried to no avail until finally someone gave me a shot and as soon as I stepped onto a mine site the calls started coming in. Pennywise, awesome story bro. You took it right? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. May 1, 201014 yr Pennywise, awesome story bro. You took it right? Not yet; still got to finish out my apprenticeship; two months to go. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v390/pennywise_pw/pennywiseevilfun.png -Evi|. PR Captain
May 12, 201014 yr Two possibly three solution architect positions available in Canberra. http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/yy116/IINoddyII/aux1_zpsab5224fd.png
May 12, 201014 yr yeah the mining game is a hard 1 to get into but once the foot is in the door, the sky is the limit. im a jumbo operator, and have been mining for 11 years, not the best job in the world but 130k and a rotating 5 on 5 off roster is a pretty good lifestyle.if you have a trade you are highly favored to get a job if you annoy the right people for long enough.if you cant seem to break into mining, try the remote areas of aus where it is hot and horrible, alot of people cant hack IT out there for 2 or 3 weeks strait.....(THATS WHERE YOU GET YOUR FOOT IN THE DOOR AND EARN DECENT MONEY DOING SO). Connecting to IP with Password TBA and it's not letting me through. Done something wrong? :withstupidsmiley:
March 24, 201213 yr I am. Finished HSC last year, ended up with Certificate III in Live Production, Theatre and Events (Technical Operations), which got me a job offer from a motivational media company, travel to schools, three big screens/projectors etc (portable cinema). Sounds fun, not really after awhile. Now looking for Electrical/Auto Electrical apprenticeship in the mines. Missed 2012 January intake but have applied for some mid 2012 ones (BMA, Newcrest, Gold fields), they just closed. Even applied for a traineeship in a completely unrelated field to as many of you say, get my foot in the door, will see how it turns out Edited March 24, 201213 yr by big_ears2501
September 6, 201212 yr Two questions BigD'ers. 1) Where would be the best place to get a white card in Brisbane? I'm currently doing casual labour hire from a place called 'Labour Solutions Australia', working mainly for Grace as a removalist. Good pay, but not as much work as hoped. The guy I report to at LSA suggested I get a white card so I can be eligible for more labour work. 2) Also looking for some vacation work out in the mines. Preferably around Mackay/Bowen basin (as it's close to home). Don't care if I work as a cleaner or a cook or anything, just something to bring in some dough and (hopefully) give me a better opportunity when I'm finished uni [ie. already have experience out at the mines vs graduate with no experience out there]. Does anyone know any good companies or how I'd get into it? Cheers http://i.imgur.com/DtNdckc.png [WC]Xavo|xXx:
