Ok I got sent a copy of Windows 7 and i tried to install it today and after i booted from the disc (Fresh Install) it came up with this error message Right after Click 'Install now'.

"A required CD/DVD drive device is missing. If you have a driver floppy,CD,DVD or USB Flash Drive please insert now.

Note: if the windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step"

Then it has 3 buttons: Browse, Ok and Cancel

When i click browse and try to find these missing drivers i have no clue where to look and i dont have any discs with the drivers to install with so thats ruled out.

The wierdest thing is its reading it off the same DVD drive the drivers are missing from.

Specs:

Intel E8500 @3.16ghz

1TB HDD

4gb Ram

Nvidia GTX 260

DVD drive: ATAPI iHAP322

Any help would be appreciated :)

BLACKIE

Note: this is a legit copy of windows 7 atleast i think so, it was sent from my cousin in the phillipines so it may be a really legit looking fake :/.

Weird. DVD drives usually just ...work.

You can usually grab drivers from the manufacturers website - just note the model number of the drive for when you search.

You're not running Daemon tools or other drive imaging programs are you?

No im not.

Um I don't think the windows installer can read '.exe's, which means if it's not in the .inf etc format you'll need to nLite your windows install to include the drivers :)

So, did my driver fail? Did the driver for my controller not take? No, actually it had loaded the ATAPI controller correctly and was now interested in the SATA drivers for the HDD. It only took me a minute to figure that out, but a more novice user would find this confusing. It should say something like

So Far its exactly the same, how and where can i find these SATA drivers that will work for my HDD

My HDD is a Western Digital: WD1001FALS

your motherboard manufacturer should provide these.

because its the SATA controller that ask for a driver.

It probably does it in case you want to install windows on a RAID

the controller is often the north or southbridge on the mainboard

that's why you need to check the motherboard website

I can have a look for you if you are not sure what you are looking for.just post the model of the mainboard in your specs as well.

Continuing on from Cloudy, You might need to go into your BIOS and disable any settings that would activate a software RAID, this shouldn't remove your hard drive from the selectable discs, but it would prevent the need to install any other drivers with your install.

Getting Airborne since 2009

Blackie, is it a full install of Windows 7 or is it just an upgrade disk?

If its an upgrade disk, try putting the disk of your previous OS in the disk drive so that the install knows that you are indeed upgrading, otherwise it won't work! I used to have to do this with XP.

Doesn't work that way with Windows Vista / 7, to use an upgrade disc for them you actually need to have an installed AND Activated previous version on a hard drive.

No don't do this. It will allow you to install your system without the required driver however there will be a performance decrease.

What Gossy is talking about is disabling AHCI/RAID for you Sata Controller settings in the BIOS. You could do this if you wish however I suggest getting the drivers and do the installation with AHCI enabled in the BIOS (If you are going to run RAID, select RAID instead of AHCI), you will see a performance increase from your HDD as it will use a different command interface with the drive.

To get the driver you are looking for go to your motherboard manufacturers website and look in the driver section. You will be look for the Sata Controller driver, there may or may not be multiple files but you are looking for the one that is most likely under 1MB and in .INF format. There may be a file on the site that is in .EXE format and will build the file onto a floppy disc or cd or usb key.

People on whirlpool appear to have got it working without having a previous version installed, not 100% sure on that though!
