When I boot up and the info is flashing it says my memory speed is 1033. How do I use the full potential of my RAM?

Change your memory multiplier in the bios. If you don't find it, I'll reboot later and tell you the exact setting

Ummm, I've never messed with my BIOS.

 

How do I get into them?

 

Is it easy to screw up?

 

Would I get a noticeable performance increase you think?

To answer your questions:

- Delete key, push it a few times right after u start the computer

 

- Easy to do right, easy to screw up

 

- No noticeable performance increase. Unless you spend your days with old Sandra and her beautiful lines.

Leave it your ram and cpu are @ 1:1 now.

So leave it until I overclock my CPU then?

You can change it or leave it, it makes no real difference. Getting comfortable with your BIOS is a good idea though, since it can help you troubleshoot and overclock later on.

 

Step 1: When you boot up, you'll get the Gigabyte logo come up, when that is happening push DEL ["Delete"] (the one next to End and Insert) a few times. You should end up with

Step 2: It will bring you to your BIOS "Homepage", here the various options are categorized. You want to mess with frequencies so the MIT is what you want (highlighted in my screenshot)

Step 3: Making sure that your CPU is at stock is a decent idea, so check to see if your Base Clock Frequency Control is disabled. This means it will be locked at stock speeds (a bit higher due to the "turbo" functionality)

Step 4: Finally to get your RAM running at 1600Mhz, scroll down to the System Memory Multiplier (SPD) and set that to 12x. You can see by experimenting with various values that you can change your RAM speed to many different settings.

When you're done with that, hit F10, it'll ask you if you want to save & exit, hit yes. Your PC will reboot and it will be set at the 1600mhz for the ram

Yeah, changing the BCLK to Enabled will allow you to change your CPU frequency. You should read some i7 overclocking guides first, to know things like:

- Voltages to set to

- PCI-E Frequency lock

- QPI bus speed

- Relation in FSB & multiplier to overall clock speed

Smokejumper, when I'm bored next week I'm going to look at overclocking my cpu for fun (just to see how far I can go on stock volts), so I'll actually know what I'm doing on the 1366 platform after that.

 

Quick question, did you get a custom cpu cooler or did you have the stock intel one put on (by evilrooter if I'm not mistaken)? The custom ones look like the two in this picture (my latest on the left)

It's a stock cooler.
