Right got an issue atm with our internet connection, for ages it has been dropping out at times (sometimes only a few seconds sometimes for longer)

Last night it did (tis why i suddenly left) and lasted more then a few seconds so i unplugged the modem from the network (it is plugged into an 8 port router) and turne it off and would re fix it in the morning.

Morning comes and it is all behaving as if the internet is not connected yet the modem is on and has green lights. Ive now found that if plugged into the router no computer picks up the internet connection but if plugged directly into the modem (as it is now) the internet works.

Sorry if its not much to go by but does anyone have any idea what is causing it? p.s. if theres any additional info you need just give a yell but ill be leaving shortly and wont be back till later tonight so if idont reply that is why.

And i would like to thank you very much for any assistance you may offer.

Check the cables between the modem and router.

Check the cables between the router and computer.

Try different ports on the router for the computer.

Can you flash new bios to the modem and possibly router (depends on what it actually is - if it's a switch you may be able to).

Stabby is a network guy I think, so might be able to add more value to this discussion

You've confirmed the modem is fine, so do the following:

Make sure your computer is getting an IP address

1. Start -> Run -> ipconfig

Should produce something along the lines of

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 1:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

If you aren't getting an IP address, you can try an 'ipconfig /renew'. If that fails, make sure DHCP is enabled on your router.

If you are getting an ip address, ping the default gateway

2. Start -> Run -> ping <IP address of default gateway>

You should see the following:

C:\Users\Account>ping 192.168.1.2

Pinging 192.168.1.2 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.1.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Reply from 192.168.1.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Reply from 192.168.1.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Reply from 192.168.1.2: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.2:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

If you can ping the modem successfully, then log into the modem and check the status of it.

3. Internet Explorer -> Type in the URL: 192.168.1.1

This will take you to your routers web interface.

Type in your router's administration username and password.

Depending on your brand and firmware version, everything from here on out may be different. Find words that give the same/similar meaning if you can't find exactly what I've written down:

Look for "Maintenance" or "Status". Click that link.

Look for "Connection Status", click that link.

This will tell you if the router is establishing a PPPoE session or not. If it isn't, and it should be (IE, your router is always on and your PC's never "dial" the internet), there might be a "connect" button on the "connection status" screen. Click it, wait for it to do it's thing and not down any error messages. If it's a username/password incorrect message, go to Basic Settings or Setup and make sure the username and password for your ISP is in there and correct.

Grab me on TS and I'll give you a hand. Download TeamViewer if you don't mind me seeing your desk top and what screen you have active at the moment, it makes trouble shooting alot easier. I've got the parental units coming over for dinner tonight, so make it as early as you can.

Or you could just give your router a couple of hard slaps...

Followed by a lengthy admonition for the modem

to have a long hard look at itself ?

(Wispit ~ hope you fix the problem soon, nothing is so frustrating as a bodgy modem)

"When you have to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite."

- Winston Churchill

p.s. if theres any additional info you need just give a yell but ill be leaving shortly and wont be back till later tonight so if idont reply that is why.

The question is ... can Wispit see this helpful thread without his interwebz? :)

I think he is choosing not too ATM :)

Ok Just did a couple of short attempts.

1) That didnt work command prompt flashed on for a split second then disapearred, when i input /renew after ipconfig it came up and stayed there however it did not let me input anything into the command prompt nor did it display any readings (however it should be noted that when the modem was connected to the router the DSL had no green light showing, when plugged directly to a computer (as it is now) the DSL flashed for a lil bit before remaining constant.

If its of any relevance the router is a netgear FS108 and the modem is a speedstream of some sort (we are with telstra).

Edit: With connecting to the router did it just then. after logging in it showed a tab saying diagnostics, rana diagnostics and everything according to it had a pass bar one

Under: Internet Connectivity

DNS: Ping the primary Domain name server = fail

what that means i dont know, just adding anything i can that may be of relevance. I would also like to add that ill be out tonight (new years) and wont be back till late tomorrow, so if i stop replying after a certain time thats why.

Make sure you don't have a DNS IP Address under your router's basic settings. Make sure it's set to "obtain from ISP".

Right will do gonna go connect through the router and figure out how to acess its interface in order to see its setting as you suggested so ill be offline for a short tic.

Ok so tried that going to search around see if netgrear can offer advice on the IP to acess the router interface without it i cant really do much with the router. On a side note its telling me the connection has limited or no connectivity and im pretty sure it never used to have that there before would that giev a hint as to what is occuring?

If the modem is plugged in directly to the comp but not properly (i.e. if one of the green lights aint on) itll have the limited or no connectivity but once the internet is working like now its all good.

Could it be the same sort of thing with the router and btw when im plugged into the router i have no default gateway.

Try 192.168.0.1

admin password

Right ill give that a whirl (although according to one random site i found apparently the router hub thing im using has no web interface which throws a spanner in the works).

So far having no joy with connecting the internet into the router itself so for now im gonna try and borrow one off a mate o mine and see if it works then (at present im betting the router has died or had some sort of a stuff up in it)

But thanks for all the help so far guys :)

OK I have no idea how after fiddling with the connections this is what happened. Long answer is:

Somehow when plugged into the router it did not give the limited or no connectivity error. Shortly afterwards it told me there was a system with the same IP adress. (unplug all cables bar mien and the modem, find one cable was plugged into the router at both ends)

This time it tells little or no connection so i go back turn off the router and modem. Turn back on wait a short while and it works. Plug in dads computer and the internet works there as well :)

Short answer if you continusly turn the items on and off in varying orders whislt plugging in and unplugging the cables it will eventually work again :)

See...

Did you try turning it off and on again is a legitimate problem solving question !

:hi:

one cable was plugged into the router at both ends

That was the cause of the problem - there was a switching loop and the router freaked out until the loop was fixed and the router rebooted.
