On a personal basis I'm not too worried about the internet filter TBH, it won't affect any of my browsing, and even conroy has admitted:

Conroy acknowledged that the filter would only block "inadvertent" exposure to R/C content, and the pilot report bluntly states that any technically competent user could circumvent the filtering. Link

I'm pretty sure the sites I visit won't be blocked....

After a long list of stupid crap the increasingly incompetent Government has been doing lately..... I'll be the first to say it:

You're all wrong, and I am always right, and the sooner you accept it, the happier you will be. That is all!

If the filter stops sick people from obtaining sexual unappropriated videos and pictures i am all for it .

The thing is, coming from a Government which won't even allow an R18+ rating for games, I'm worried what they are going to block. I think I read the filtering is going to be headed by an independant commission (?) which is a plus I suppose.

The thing is I don't think it will apparently the filter can be bypassed with proxy's so whats the point really if these people want it they will find a way to get it it just leaves the rest of us worse off

Gah, proxys are banned at school!

This is like a double layer of bannage! I'll get through one to be speared through the throat by another.

You'll note from the quotation I had earlier, that it is primarily focused on preventing inadvertent access to undesirable material. Another "O think of the children" measure from the government.

Im only worried about the filters slowing down our already poor ISP & ADSL infastructure. Imagine the hardware strain :(

Content on the inappropriate for children test list included:

Gambling

Adult

Lingerie/Swimsuit

Drug-advocacy

Nudism

Gross-content

Profanity

Racism/Hate

Sex

Terrorism/Crime"

Copy/Pasta from a Comment, is this true?

any blocking sets a precedent... its a slippery slope towards government telling us what is right and wrong to look at.... next you will have people saying "why do you even want to look at that stuff?" and this will change societies values and opinions.. 1984...
The sad thing is...we are paying for the filter. The ISP's will be legally required to install the filter, and the cost of running it will be passed down to the consumer. Us.

its a matter of principle, an adult can make the decision whether to look at stuff or not and ffs its the parents job to look after the own children. its not the governments job to look after your children and monitor what they look at its YOURS, if you want to filter your internet go do it but dont filter my internet

watch Yes Minister to get an idea of how 'independant' those commissions are . . . yes i know its a comedy but i have inlaws working in Govt who say the pollies aren't that far away from whats in there . . . as well as some civ servants . . .

There comes a time in every musician's life when they must decide what instrument they should master. Few. If any are ever worthy enough to master. The cowbell.

Who gets to decide who is on the independent commission? The government and the people hired to run the commission will bend over backwards for the government to get the position in the first place so who do you think will have influence over their decisions?

The filter is the first step in the line to make the internet just the same as all other mainstream media in the country. Incredibly scripted to a few peoples agendas and everything else will be squeezed out to nothing.

In the end you, as in the majority of society voted these guys in with a golden pass to do what ever they want, so really if you voted for them, labour or liberal coz they are the same thing, then you wanted this type of censoring, filtering, to happen to maintain your democracy. Those with all the power stay in power and everyone else gets taken advantage of or suffers for not.

well i didn't vote for either, but the way our system works it pretty much always ends up being a choice for either or . . .

the way the parties seem to work is like this (from what my inlaws have witnessed):

- first loyalty to party factions

- then loyalty to the party

- loyalty to their seat (constituents)

- loyalty to their state

- loyalty to their country

so from that basic framework you end up with two parties controlled, not by their respective leaders but by the party factions who have their own vested interests in things rather than what is right for the general populous or the state/country.

I agree, but parents' overlook cannot always be guaranteed. Its a shame that the government is using this as more of an umbrella scheme really...

As long as we can circumvent it, thats fine. I just hope it doesn't effect connecting to overseas servers, or downloading certain downloads that we cannot speak of here.
