I just tried to start it up and Avast! popped up with a warning saying there was a Trojan in it. Trojans name is 'Win32:Delf-MZG [Trj]

It just happened again when I tried to open the Avast user interface and it said the virus was in an alcohol soft folder for Alcohol 52%.

Maybe I'm infected... Will report back later.

Yeah, 52% alcohol does this to many people, may I suggest a light beer?

Pfft. Great help you lot are :)

Anyway, definitely a virus I picked up yesterday, where I got it I don't know - possibly from facebook because 3 of my friends have been infected and are sending everyone links... Anyway 67% through a boot up scan care of Avast anti-virus. It's infected a fair bit of stuff, but not as much as I thought, really hoping I don't have to reformate or anything....

Oh, I get it now Noddy. Couldn't understand why you posted like that. :D

The reason my first post is a shambles, is because I was halfway through typing it I opened another programme which also gave the error, so I kinda panicked and posted and then a couple of seconds after posting the anti-virus suggested a boot scan which I'm currently 71% through.

PS. any good tips on making sure I've completely eradicated the virus?

Facebook unlikely, unless you clicked a link to an external site. Teamspeak unlikely too. I think you were looking at :db: or you got a crappy torrent.

Ok, so apparently the latest version of Avast has something wrong with it which is making it report false positives in a lot of programmes (I ran a boot scan and fixed the comp, redownloaded TS and it gave it the same error.

hijackthis will give you some useful invader information, but if you don't know your system well (know what tasks should be running and what should not) you will be on a big learning curve.

It can be lots fun finding and destroying the little nasties, and it can be very educational watching them in action.

Suggest if you really have a virus, format you HD and start clean. Zapping the exes and DLLs they load and leave around the place can be tricky and can make your PC really REALLY unstable.

If you really want to give it a go, start by wiping your “temp” and “Temporary Internet files” and “content.ie5”. The last folder is well hidden in Win7 … try C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5. If you are using an older Windows, it is a hidden folder under “Temporary Internet files”.

Next take each process in the “task manager” and google search its name and add the word virus to the google search. This will identify what the process is, and the likelihood that is has been compromised. Ordering the processes by the “CPU” column will show the most active processes, and depending on what it is, can provide clues (should my printer driver really be using 100% of the CPU?). If the nastie has hidden in svchost.exe, you have some work ahead of you trying to figure out what is running inside the svchost shell. If the nastie is a rootkit virus, good luck … they can hide from the OS and from task manager (Hmm … my task manager is saying it is 100% idle, and yet the HD is going nuts and the internet connection is maxed out)

The last virus I destroyed left my PC teetering on the edge of sanity, with BSOD being common and system freeze becoming a way of life (for a while).

A neat trick is to pull the internet connection from the wall. Poor old virus may be sending your internet banking details to some Russian gangster at the time and may chuck a hissy fit when disconnected.

Have fun!!!

I don't procrastinate. I just like to do things later.

Thanks Shaggie,

Fortunately it wasn't a virus, just Avast! was reporting false positives because of an update they did earlier yesterday morning. Been all sorted now, new update and team speak loads all good. I might backup all of my photos now.
