No Diablo III in 2010

Last week in New York, Blizzard offered a product release roadmap (thanks Kotaku) for the next few years, showing what is to come in 2009, 2010, and a few years beyond. For this year, the company listed World of Warcraft only, however Blizzard obviously plans to provide content beyond 2011 with the release of Cataclysm in 2010 and other content beyond.

As for 2010, Blizzard also lists a few titles other than the World of Warcraft expansion. Included is the highly anticipated sci-fi RTS StarCraft II and the upgraded Battle.net. Also on Blizzard's list is "China Online," an entry we assume represents the updated version of World of Warcraft, specialized for the Chinese requirements.

But what isn't on the 2010 list is Diablo III. Gamers wanting the fantasy-themed action RPG may not see the game until 2011 or 2012 according to the presentation. This period of time will also host a few other titles however, including Blizzard's mystery "unannounced MMO" and the Star Craft II expansion. Battle.net also appears in the "next few years" category; we presume Blizzard will be making modifications and adding new features to the revamped service over the next three or so years.

It's unfortunate that Diablo III isn't making an appearance in 2010. As it stands, the game has been in development for four years, and may remain in development for a possible five. With that said, it may hit store shelves before Q4 2011, giving it a good six years to fester. Anything beyond that will make it qualified as a possible contender against Duke Nukem Forever.

:( Aww... At least there's still Median XL and beyond. Thank goodness for Laz bringing a fresh bout of gameplay to D2 :)

Pffft, just play Titan quest. Very good ripoff of D2 and has a much better engine.

Played and uninstalled. Didn't quite have the pizazz needed to replace diablo... I'd say it could replace Diablo 1 easily, but D2 was still more fun IMO. I'm worried that D3 won't be that great... for some reason I think the move to 3D might actually hurt it. It's hard to explain what it is about the new diablo type games that I don't find fun, but there always feels like something is missing.

D2 is still one of the few RPGs i always go back to. Have all of Baulders Gate and NWN but still just love D2.

Personally dont think the 3D will nerf D3 unless they do something really bad. If you can control the camera similar to NWN then it should be good i reckon.

I loved D2, played it since I was about 10 years old or so.

Only thing that worries me is the direction that Blizzard took WoW might influence how they make D3....

I dont think that would be a factor as WoW was kinda an evolution of Warcraft, whereas D1/2 and i'd say 3 are all soldily RPG style with a focus on single player . . . that said tho i do hope what you say doesn't come to pass . . .

Just played through the demo of Torchlight - it's pretty cool! :) I never got into Diablo at all (thought it was a car racing game) but from what I can tell, Torchlight is effectively D2 wearing WoW clothes. Now while that sounds repulsive to me... it works really well!!

Can grab the demo on Steam.

* I know steam is technically free but it's still not 100% reliable + you can max out on iigh whereas I've routinely only got 1mB/s (opposed to the 1.5 I can usually get) from the steam mirror (3fl)

no we have iinet at work, but i just like messing with the boss as he thinks that the young bloke in the workshop is always on facebook or youtube etc (even if the foreman has him workin his butt off, he is still somehow miraculously on the afore mentioned two sites . . . not!) so just like to picture his face when he see's that his quota has taken a hit by a couple of hundred mb (whether freezone or not) . . . tis brilliant (o:

I bought BG1 with all the expansions when it was like $9 at EBGames ages ago. Never really got into it too much. NWN tho, THAT was my main game for ages followed by D2. Wanted to get ID as well but since i never finished BG1 didn't bother as i thought i could spend my monies on other games i knew i'd play.

Psyrus I think the team who put Torchlight together were the original Diablo people. Apparently they made this as a test case, to see if it'd work. If so, the plan (I think) is to go fullburn and turn it into an MMO type thing.

Either way, it's a hell of a lot of fun! :)

Diablo 3 is going to rock my socks off.

Anyone played Dragon Age Origins? It's fantastic. Storytelling is great, probably still not as good as Baldurs Gate 2 but better than both NWN's.

Combat is actually a challenge too which makes a nice change for an RPG.

Here is a list of particularly awesome things:

dogs

sniping

very spicy chilli

cat claws on people (but still cool on cats)

lol... I was considering the purchase. Had the paypal payment page open, was looking at if there was any cash in the account left, and whoops clicked confirm payment :p

Looks like I'm $21AUD poorer but a fun RPG richer

Looking forward to D3 being as good or hopefully better than torchwood

moar D3 news...

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/PC-RPG-Game-Diablo-Blizzard,news-32318.html

Blizzard's Jay Wilson said that skill trees will not be a part of Diablo III.

DiabloFans conducted an interview with Blizzard's Jay Wilson and chatted about the upcoming action-RPG PC game, Diablo III. Recently Blizzard revealed that it had no plans to ship the game in 2010, instead revealing a possible 2011 or 2012 street date. This latest interview dives straight into the topic of skill trees, and how they're listed as "unnamed skill tree 1-3." Naturally, inquiring Diablo fans want to know more.

Wilson's eventual explanation reflects back to two Tweets over the last week, with the first reporting that the Diablo III team is implementing and testing a new system that changes how skills are acquired. A tweet dated yesterday is more of a tease, asking followers what approach the team is taking in regards to the removed/changed skill trees.

But in the interview, Wilson admits that they're removing the tree-type architecture and will instead install a "purely" skill-based system. "This new system is still in the development stages and if it does not work, we still have plenty of options to fall back on," he said. "Right now, we're just trying different things and getting a feel for the few ideas in regards to the skill system that we have going on right now. It differs from the World of Warcraft/Diablo II type hierarchical styles and is more of a skill pool/path than a tree per se."

The interview also covers topics including class-specific quests, the difficulty settings (or current lack thereof), balancing the power of an item in comparison to its drop rate, what the merchants are selling within the game, an more. While Wilson refused to comment about the PvP system, he did say that they're trying to implement features from the published novels.
