If I remember correctly, there are a few forum members at uni. It's the crunch time of the semester/year. Here's what I've been doing, hence not playing PR:

I accidentally hit the print screen button whilst doing this, so I though I would procrastinate a little.

This is a ss of some of the simulation work i was doing (oooh! pretty colours!)

Soon it will be exam time again, *sigh*

So what job is waiting for you once you work out all those numbers? Because I have no idea what it all means.

Hopefully there will be a well paying engineering job for me at the end of all this.

My thesis is titled: A simulation study of a rolling element rotating over a thin crack.

Here's some more pics:

The model as built in ANSYS:

And I move the rolling element or "ball" along the raceway and see what it behaves like at different locations relative to the crack.

Here's what it looks like when the bottom most tip of the ball is sitting on the corner of the crack. Notice how the ball is in contact with part of the raceway on the other side of the crack. :hrmm:

That crack is 5 microns wide at the top, which, if you type 5 microns (or 5um) into wolfram alpha, it tells you all sorts of interesting useless stuff, like:

yeah but this is the internet' date=' you have to expect the unexpected or else you'll get caught out by things you should've expected but didn't. Its exactly like knowing about the stuff you dont know about, that way you know theres stuff you dont know so when you know what you dont know you can say "ah i knew that!"[/quote']
i have 4 exams within the first 3 days of the exam period (starts saturday), and i have about 40 lectures to watch. worst allocation ever :(

When I was uni age it was all about spending dad's money on beer. Class was where you went to overcome the hangover you had from the weekend of drinking cheap beer

its still like that ;). we've drunk so much cheap beer that those beers have become expensive now. for anyone from WA you can blame uni students for making emu export so expensive :p

Haha JL/pogo, export is the drink of choice for some of my mates, but I can't touch the stuff. Instant headache which results in wife beating, although I don't have a wife to beat. I just beat someone else's.

G.I.Joe, that k value is an approximation for the normal stiffness for two cylinders (parallel axes) in contact, much the same as a spring constant (year 11/12 physics).

Most of the calculations in this thesis revolve around Hertzian contact theory. Smokejumper, you reckon this stuff made you feel dumb? This guy, Heinrich Hertz did all the maths and came up with these equations back in 1881, he was 24 at the time. They didn't have computers back then.
