I'm seriously considering playing this game.

Has anyone played it? Is it even playable from Australia? It looks like it could be a lot of fun.

Please tell me as much as you can.

Thanks!

It's the exact type of game I want to play.

I bet because it's old it could really use a major overhaul and new engine though.

Who cares though, I'm going to whore the hell out of Spitfires and grief people on the ground a lot.

Yes I have played it.

It is a very good game, I played it for quite sometime and is fairly teamwork orientated. Well.. somedays if you get on when the majority of players are on you will get the gameplay of PR and other days its you and a few others around you attacking somewhere. Its definitely a good game that you do get immersed in but it is lacking in the graphics, sound, sometimes gameplay and playerbase area. Sometimes there are enough player to make you feel like you are in WWII (AWESOME FUN!) and sometimes there is not enough players to enjoy it.

Do try it !

Indeed, for a subscription based game I am very surprised that people would put up with such a poor level of quality.

It's almost my prefect game from the sounds of it, it just needs a new engine etc.

Then it WOULD be my perfect game and I would never play anything else anymore.

First of, I'll start by saying the game is nothing short of awesome.

Now that that's out of the way, if there was ever a game that encompassed the scope and scale of a real war, this is it.

Unfortunately for aussie players however, since the main two servers are located in the US and the UK, you'll experience just a bit too much lag to hold your own in infantry fights. However, in regards to armor and plane dogfighting, apparently it's all good.

My fondest memory of the trial I played of this game was a full fledged Fallschirmjager assault of a british held town. German bombers bombed the hell out of it, then our invasion force (about 6 planes holding roughly 10 FSJs each I think) parachuted over the town and got into the fight. Was epic. MG teams got overwatch from a nearby hillside pouring fire into the city, Mortar teams were in the treelines firing into the major capture points, then the rest of us rushed in. I got raped by a tommy with an SMG tho :(.

For those of you complaining about the graphics, you need to understand the sheer scale of the game. ArmA is puny in comparison. We're also talking 200 players at any given time here.

yeaaa booooy.

If the players have dropped off that much it must suck but when I was playing say 3 - 5 years ago the peak players was about 500 - 600 which was uncommon but made for the most epic gaming and realism ever.

It is a massive game and there is a lot of depth to it and I think if you are the right person its a game that you will play and never play anything else again.. maybe.

There has been many many fond moments for me in that game also, sitting in the back of a C-47 for 15 minutes with 10 others doing a night raid with a team of about 30 to destroy German factories.

Having a massive battle over a coastal town with with 200 player on the one team attacking this town. Gunboats in the river system that flows in and out and sometimes 10 aircraft dog fighting and dive-bombing over head.

At one point 75 - 100 players all parachuting out of C47's at very similar intervals, one of the most amazing things to see in a computer game and to think every one of those is another player.

If you ever watched band of brothers and wanted to be in it than this is a game that is sort of in that direction but remember only sometimes is the game play awesome enough to enjoy it.

Ok, dont mind my previous post. The criticism is bad on the graphics , you wrote a thread with a tip off my post so i thought you read all it contained.

There is a graphics overhaul ( will be marked as the second one for the game ) with bump mapping, speed tree 5, better textures, ragdolls, water effects, foliage, more grass, more weather effects and smoke and etc... It still wont be the best, but it's a small team. Very small based off in Texas or something.

Love the way the teams are set out, only change teams every like 24 hours or something, 2 allied teams, brits and french or something vs germans. go the Luftwaffe !

If they do an overhaul I might give it a look, though with no local servers it might be a lost cause for us Australians (and NZ). Still I can't see myself paying $15 a month (or whatever it is) for a game that is simply "alright". And with the subscriptions they are getting not to mention the crazy "builder" accounts they have I am sure that they are making plenty of money off the game.

What I don't get is why hasn't a big company done something like this? There is a big following of WW2 games and will for a long time.

It's the last good vs evil war that was pretty clear cut and it's been a blockbuster seller for movies and games.

Surely by now computers are powerful enough to have a game that looks as good as Crysis where you can destroy everything and be a mmofps.

I'm sure it will happen but dammit I want it now!

Good points.

Planetside came out in 2003 and that was awesome like WW2OL but it was futuristic and had leveling, ranking actually. Now almost 7 years later or 9 for WW2OL nothing has came out remotely similar hehe. Planetside was killed by a big company, sony. While WW2OL struggles ( ? ) is active as a small one.

One gripe i have is that there is never enough communication between the people who buy the game, and the people who develope it. But thats just me =D

I was reading something in a magazine about communication.

There are teams who are taking money up front to develop games and people who pay up front get to suggest and vote on options they want in game.

I think I read it in Atomix or PC Powerplay.

Bloody good thinking if you ask me, the fans get what they want and they test the beta!

Usually before a game comes out i troll the forums, lots of good stuff. Game comes out and doesn't have those "suggested" features. ( usually things people knew wouldnt work from other games, sort of like an early warning system for the devs !) and game f bombs itself in end.

So people have to pay to give suggestions that devs will actually listen to =D I guess they need to know there getting $$ for doing something of use instead of making a scam bomb.

It's more like the indy games trying to get funding to make something good over just a simple cash grab.

Imagine for example the PR devs getting or even developing a new engine, that requires a full time staff to build from scratch. If you get people to essentially buy the game up front and help guide it so that it will be successful then everyone wins. The devs can afford to make the game and we get a shiny new toy that we actually want! Plus with the added sense of ownership from the consumer you also bought loyalty.
