I have always wanted to get in to 3D modeling so I have chosen my courses done the reading but one of the courses I have applied for wants a folio and my problem is I don't know what to create I have got a criteria to meet listed:

Visual story telling

Tell a story with a sequence of pictures (without words or text).

A ‘storyboard’ is one of the traditional motion picture and animation pre-production methods of conveying what happens within the script through a sequence of pictures.

Choose one of the following themes:

- Cycle

- The Flight

- Memories

- Fire!

Tell the story as a comic strip style sequence using no more than 9 to 10 postcard-sized images in the format below. In your storyboard, use images 1 to 8 to develop the story which may lead to an unexpected, amusing or surprise ending in the last 1 to 2 images.

I can model alright(amateur level) but I cant seem to come up with any ideas of what to create that's my problem, I'm was looking for some input to help me out so any Ideas to do with those themes would be appreciated.

Thanks, Kenny

a full stop or a comma or two could be useful here. - Can't help myself, I'm a grammar Nazi.

Did you ever watch Seinfeld? It was so great because it was about nothing. Well, really it started off being about just things that have happened to him, or close to him.

Think of something that has happened to you and turn that into your story.

Not to sound harsh but to be able to generate your own ideas is key to working in this sort of industry. The reason the course wants a folio is that it's trying to see whether or not you demonstrate a level creativity and thus meaning you would be suitable for the course.

Start off by creating some sort of hybrid of shows or games you like if you can't think of something off the bat. It's better you learn how to create your own ideas than rely on other people in the end.

yeah as ryza says think of it yourself, for one its much better you atleast think of things so you can in future understand others storyboards easier too.

doesnt matter if your never going to throw your ideas up, doing story boards is something everyone in a dev team(other then coders) will do on the job.

The Nomula:

nom = 3(nom) or 3nom :. nom = nomnomnom :. nomnomnom + omnnom^2 - nom = omnnomnomnomomn

Also, I think the fact their testing your creativity is that one aspect of creativity is visualization - something that is very important in 3d modeling because lets say if a concept artist gave you a picture of a vehicle/weapon he or she designed, you would need to be able to actually visualize what that would look like in 3d before you got to work.

I can't give you advice on the course as I'll be starting mine Games course in January, but it's a very interesting industry in that everyone needs to be able to understand each other, and their ideas.

I've got a few ideas but my problem is how they make a story for example-

I've been making a Glock 17 for fun and I could use that in Fire! but hows that a story or I was thinking of making a Dogfight for The Flight but that wouldn't be a story either it would just be action and two planes in the sky.

I get what you guys are getting at as well and normally I can imagine stuff with ease but I've been having practice exams all week so I'm a little off my game.

A dog fight is a story. Story boarding is being able to get across the actions and events of a sequence in as little space as possible. You are really telling how things will move within a time frame and who and what are involved more than anything.

A dog-fight is a great idea as in one frame you can get across about 30 seconds of action. ie: A story board artist showing a plane doing a barrel roll draws the plane in it's ending and/or starting position and will draw a spiralling arrow behind it to indicate what action is taking place. This allows the animators to simply look at the one frame, immediately recognize how that sequence goes and fills in the frames.

Also, storyboarding is generally 2D work. Your modelling skills won't help much. Just google storyboards and you'll get a good idea from the image results or think comic books without words or text.

Here is a list of particularly awesome things:

dogs

sniping

very spicy chilli

cat claws on people (but still cool on cats)

A few things you should consider,

1. How well can you draw?

2. Can you plan out a sequence of actions to the detail?

Start with why you want to make the Glock? or the Plane? Once you have the reason behind doing it, it is just a case of telling how it got to being done.

I cant really help as i am applying for the same courses by the sounds of it:)
