Came into work this morning, chatting to a fellow work college (volunteer firefighter) whose started up a FB group 'Please Make It Mandatory To Remove Unattended Vehicles'

Now the reason for this? His daughters boyfriend was in the passenger seat of the Hilux. Police say "witnesses reported the hilux was dragging a subaru", so naturally there is a cry of 'HOON' from the media which wrote the article in the link below.

http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0,21598,26062459-2761,00.html

What happened? Police removed the plates of the Landcruiser and put their little sticker on the side saying the vehicle has been reported (basically a bullseye for ppl with rocks etc) and left it in the emergency lane. Hilux is driving along when it gets cut off by another vehicle (coming from the right), the driver swerves left into the emergency lane to avoid hitting this car (possibly the reported draggin subaru). It clips the Landy which takes out the side of the Hilux (and Landy as well). They had to cut out the driver side of the Hilux to remove my college's daughters boyfriend from the car as there was no way they were getting in from the passenger side. The driver was taken to Mirrabooker Police Station, said to the officer there what had happened and the officer replies "you do know that it is against the law to use the emergency lane to avoid a collision with another vehicle? your suppose to pull INTO oncoming traffic to avoid the collision." The young bloke says "but the car that cut me off was coming from the right, if i did as you suggest I'd just ram into the side of it." to which the office replied "never the less thats what your suppose to do."

SO, after those great pearls of wisdom from the police officer, my work college does a bit of research and finds there is no such law stating this and to top it all off the Police have the power to remove vehicles from the side of the road which constitute a hazard to other traffic. So, how many vehicles have you seen parked in the emergency lane with those nice bright stickers on the windows which show the police have visited the car?

Blaugh, that stupid 'hoon' term is being thrown around for the stupidest of things these days, it's the new buzzword for anything traffic related, aside from old people speeding... oh wait, it's used for that too!

The police and lawmakers of Australia need a serious reality check, with such stuffups as the recent IM240 test being obvious examples, not to mention the various inconsistencies between the police knowledge and compliance centres' requirements, which means you can be sent for a $80 'inspection' only to rediscover that everything in your car is stock and totally legal. Give me a break.

agree with that one, from my friends who've had run ins with the cops re their vehicles 'road worthiness' the coppers involved seem to go to the nth degree looking for something so they could put a sticker on the car. Couple of instances come to mind with one friend:

- knob missing from the cold/hot slider (old style slider, not the rotating knob - oh comes fitted with the knob from factory so should be fitted)

- light on the radio wasn't working (radio light comes working from factory so it should be working)

- radio not fitted to the car (vehicle came with one from factory so one has to be fitted!)

- headlights were too bright for ADR standards (cop didn't have a 'lux tester' or whatever you'd use to test headlight brightness, oh and forget that it was stock from the factory mind you!)

this mate was sent to the pits a number of times by the same cop. as my mate was an autospark and had all the required engineering certificates for all the mods he'd done to his car he basically used any slight discrepancy to the 'factory fitted' manufacturers spec he'd ping him on it.

Any Police on here to offer some balance to the argument? Im all for streamlining laws and procedures, and I'm sure there's a buttload of dodgy coppers around, but i don;t like Cop-Bashing much either
[sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Oh I'm not cop bashing, I myself have had no negative run ins with them, and I truly believe that the majority of the time they will only pick on the people that they've seen doing something obviously reckless or dumb, but I certainly have heard my fair share of stories of negative experiences, and I suppose it's particularly this OTT hoon legislation that I take offense to, rather than the actual enforcement agencies (unless, again, there is an abuse of power demonstrated)

that to me seems to be the only time i've ever heard bad reports. my run-ins with cops have all been pretty good. i usually use it as an excuse to ask them all the questions i have about police in general (such as why do country cops have different coloured uniforms? aparently its to do with dirt not showing up as much) when i get em to myself.

my mates problems all seemed to stem from the fact that he was:

1. under 25

and 2. had a turbo on his car

the cop that pulled him up obviously took issue with him for some reason so whenever he saw him would pull him over and canary his car.

but i don;t like Cop-Bashing much either

i'm normally the first to come to their defense among my friends/fam when an issue comes up as they are always portrayed as doing the wrong thing by the media no matter what they do.

however, knowing facts related to an incident or knowing the person directly involved in an incident will give me pause if needed. my friend i mentioned above, while having a powerful car would ALWAYS do his 'hooning' on tracks or at the drags, he just fit into the stereotype thats portrayed by both the police and the media so therefore was obviously worth 'keeping off the streets' in that particular officers mind.

I like cops, I just don't like it when they catch me doing something I know I'm not supposed to be doing..... :p

However, I'm really polite when I get busted and have so far always been let off the hook.

As for hoons, I can't do that in Australia. Oh god does it ever cost too much. I'll save driving around like an asshat for Canada and just get a 4x4 here so I'm not tempted.

So the simplified version of the story is that:

Your colleges daughters boyfriend was in the passenger seat of a hilux being driven by a douche bag who decided to drag and ended up crashing into an abandoned vehicle in the emergency lane...

and now its time to blame everyone else for what happened....

"oohh lest blame the police for not removing the vehicle even though we were racing cars"

"oohh lets start a lame facebook page "Please make it mandatory to remove unattended vehicles" when it was really my fault."

That guy really needs to wake up to himself and accept the consequences of his actions and stop blaming everyone else....

Two friends of mine got seriously injured when they were parked on the side of the road and two cars were dragging up the street. one cut the other one off and caused the other vehicle to collide into my mates parked car....

So stuff your lame excuse for your colleges daughters boyfriend behavior.

I' had written a whole reply to all your points but i doubt you'll read a word of what i'd written and take any of it on board. Suffice to say that not every situation is the same. While its real crummy for your mates, that does not mean thats what happened here. You'll disagree i'm sure and you'll prolly be one of the first people to write a comment along the lines of "gumble grumble hoons grumble grumble locked up grumble grumble hoons" etc etc. Your experience has obviously effected you as has mine, however i'd prefer if you'll take your "so you can stuff you..." comment and keep it to yourself in the future.

If they were dragging, i'll join you in your grumble comments and say they deserve everything they get. If they weren't tho . . . what then? Will you still have the same thoughts towards them?

I've taken the liberty of cutting and pasting the sentence you glossed over and made it bold so you can't miss it.

You do know that accidents happen without drag racing right? Even the reason for the Hilux getting cut off could be caused by the Subaru getting a puncture or something.

As for drag racing, what idiot would drag race a Subaru in a Hilux? The Subaru will eat a Hilux.

It's a good thing the car was left abandoned in the left lane. It acts as a wake up call to the rest of society or does noone actually think of other possible outcomes. (btw its just lucky that noone was in the car at the time)

"you do know that it is against the law to use the emergency lane to avoid a collision with another vehicle?... The young bloke says "but the car that cut me off was coming from the right' date=' if i did as you suggest I'd just ram into the side of it." to which the office replied "never the less thats what your suppose to do."[/quote']

This is accurate and correct. If you travel at 100k/hr into a (recent) car head-on chances of survival are one hell of a lot more than if you side swipe someone changing a tyre or a pedestrian. You are not supposed to change lanes or rapid direction without indicating your intent first, yeah?

Edited by rohan11221

Its a natural defensive reaction when being cut off to swerve to avoid contact, its almost impossible to not swerve, hell I mounted a medium strip once and nearly spun out because of someone cutting me off.

If a car has been abandoned on some form of express highway ect usually they are reported by camera's, if a car brakes down usually the owner calls the RACV, RAA or what ever your state calls them and stays with the car. Once a car has been abandoned it should be towed impounded and hell the council/state makes a buck and employes more people.

Its an emergency lane for a reason and using it to avoid an accident IMO fits the description.

As for the police bashing blah, if its a law that the car should be towed then the cops failed to do their job, having said that we live with beurocratic BS everyday and its another case of red paperwork doesnt justify/support the right thing being done.

did you???.... read the article..."Witnesses claimed two cars were racing at up to 150km/h on Mitchell Freeway on Friday night." one of them being the Hilux... I would take the word of a number of independent witness rather then a person in the car who has to protect he friends reputation.

Really!!??....but dont you think the risk of the an accident (such as this thread) or injury to a person triples or more if you are racing...

True, it all comes down to one person word against another. But I'd take anything that is in a news post with a grain of salt.

The amount of times that I've personal knowledge of a story that is written in a paper where they mention "...a number of witnesses claim...", when in fact all they have done is talk to 1 person that happened to be driving past.

Same here, a bloke in perth copped a tomahawk to the face a little while back. He was described as an "innocent elderly bystander" . . . I know the guy, the first was correct, the last two weren't. He was giving first aid to a woman and her child who were already hit with the tomahawk and i'm sure being in his 50's would disagree with the term 'elderly'.

[edit] - granted this example isn't referring to the term "witnesses", however i mention it as its in the same vein imo.

I am rather amused that you came back today just to give me bad rep in an earlier post ages ago just to call me ignorant. The best part is you calling me ignorant while giving me a news link that I assume you think is gospel.
