Hey All,

I don't have actual evidence for this, but I have a feeling that my computer has adware or spyware. The reason is it has been a bit sluggish even after a few ccleans and defrags. I run virus scans at least twice a week but they come up clear. I did once plug my mates harddrive in and it said it had trojans but AVG apparently cleared them up.

I'm just wondering what I can do to ascertain that it is a virus and what I can do to remove it. Also what else it could be if it isn't a virus.

Cheers guys.

Go into safe mode and run all your anti virus stuff and anti malware ect..

malwarebytes.org ftw :)

Also make sure you clean up your registry, defrag and turn off some of your start up programs.

REFORMAT!!

Lol, but seriously. A reformat really is not that hard so long as you have backed up the stuff you need. Your computer will be completely error free and run like brand new. You will find that no matter what you do computers will accumulate "junk" code over time. This will slow it down and start to cause errors eventually. While there are a few ways you can clean your computer up a bit you can never really eliminate all of the junk. The only way to do so is to start over from scratch.

I had to reformat earlier this week as BF2 just decided it didn't want to open anymore, tried reinstalling and when that didn't work I just reformatted the whole operating system drive. Took me about 2 hours to completely reformat and have everything reinstalled and back to normal. Computer is nice and clean and runs great.

If you can fix it easily with a simple virus scan, all good, otherwise it might be time...

Yea, I really would like to reformat this old beast, but I don't have a Vista install disk.

I have a disk that comes with the lappy for drivers I think, but I don't think that it comes with a vista install or w/e is needed.

I'm gonna boot in safe mode when I'm at footy and run AVG. I ran adaware last night but it came up clean. So I'll try safemode tonight.

I think windows is just. The registry gets pooped up over time and if you

run ten different registry cleaners you get ten different sets of things to

remove... verdict from me is "windows is just pure .

1) spybot search and destroy

AVG, Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D.

Update, safe mode scan.

Without a format they're probably the best combination to clean a system and keep it clean.

However with any XP system I recommended formatting on principle at least every 6 months. Win Vista I don't touch if i can help it, and Win7 I haven't had enough experience with yet to say how stable it is, but the RC version on my system right now certainly seems at least as stable as SP3 XP.

depending on what beastie you have and who made it there should be a manufacturer icon/shortcut either on your desktop or in the start menu (unless you've removed them) that allows you to create recovery discs. I know Acer (the cheap buggers!) dont provide discs with their lappys but give you a nice icon and make you fork out the couple of cents for CD/DVD's to make your own recovery discs. If its HP or Toshiba, you 'should' have the recovery disc already, sometimes they double the recovery/driver disc as one so . . . yeah . . . there you go food for thought i spose. All else fails you should be able to email them for the media, I know HP will send out the media to you free if you haven't got it.

Hmm, I've got an ASUS M50VC, it sounds like they might double up the driver/recovery disc but it's at home so I'd have to wait until I go home next.

By media, do you mean Vista?
