Posted July 20, 200915 yr As it says - "Google Image Search Kills My DSL modem." Not always but invariably when looking for an image my modem craps itself when all the thumbnails are loading in Google image search. I have a D-Link 502T (I think). I used to work in ISP tech support so I know how to fix these problems but it just seems a little strange - can it be that all the the concurrent TCP threads are killing the modem ? Sometimes it just needs a restart and/or system reboot and sometimes it needs a full reset. When this problem first started I replaced the ethernet cable with a spare but it seems that Google images is the actual culprit. Anyone heard of this before ? July 20, 200915 yr I've heard of torrents doing it because of too many NAT connections or something, but google image... hmmm I will say that after owning 2 dlinks that I will never own another, billion/draytek for the freaking win http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. July 20, 200915 yr Author So it may be the D-Link... argh... I have two spare Bigpong-sourced Speedstream4200's... maybe 3.... but argh *sigh* "When you have to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite." - Winston Churchill
July 20, 200915 yr Teehee speedstream Well before you throw good money at a bad solution, have you tried the regular wierd unrelated-but-might-fix-it things like DMZ your PC, disabling any firewall things, uhhhhhhhhh messing with other settings until it works ?? http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. July 20, 200915 yr My modem, similar to what Psyrus mentioned, would die due to having too many concurrent connections. A quick custom firmware, and it's beautiful (you could also sort it through the torrent program). It was/is a Billion, cheapest model available at the time. I bridged it through my router, the router controls how many connections the modem takes. http://imgur.com/e5y6e.gif You've already ruined these forums for me, I have no desire to read your rhetoric or the pathetic arguments you get yourself in to, or the personal vendetta you have against me, so please, do not talk to me. July 20, 200915 yr I have the Linksys WRT54GL, which allows, definitely, 3rd party firmwares to be run. Just check whatever model you think about buying to see if their is a modded firmware for it. It's like PR is to BF2. http://imgur.com/e5y6e.gif You've already ruined these forums for me, I have no desire to read your rhetoric or the pathetic arguments you get yourself in to, or the personal vendetta you have against me, so please, do not talk to me. July 20, 200915 yr Author Uh.... how's a firmware work then ? "When you have to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite." - Winston Churchill
July 20, 200915 yr Well, the 'firmware' is the 'software' that talks to the 'hardware'. So, generally, the companies that build these modems/routers release the bare minimum of features, crappy layout and some bugs etc. Then some modders come along, create a custom firmware with cool features, improved UI, real-time monitoring etc etc. This is what I use on my router only: http://www.polarcloud.com/tomatofaq I was semi-forced into this position. You could just buy a better modem/router that doesn't lock up when asked to do basic things and avoid third party firmwares. Edit: Also, from what I read on the whirlpool forums, the Linksys MODEMS aren't as good as other modems. The ROUTERS are good though. July 20, 200915 yr Careful with linksys. A lot of their models are prone to over heating. In summer went through 3 of them. Finally gave up and went to D-Link. Not a single crash of the router in the last... 6 months +, maybe more then that. http://www.deadlycombinationclan.com/anaraith/sig/rotate.php FEAR ME I AM PITA BREAD

Transmission output is overclocked a tad too. http://imgur.com/e5y6e.gif You've already ruined these forums for me, I have no desire to read your rhetoric or the pathetic arguments you get yourself in to, or the personal vendetta you have against me, so please, do not talk to me. July 20, 200915 yr I think i got a speedstream 4200, it Dies when i launch cod5 mp never knew the cause, this could shed some light. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k53/Rommel93/avsnsigs/ah1_2avatar1.jpg
July 20, 200915 yr D link routers have issue with their power pack thingy's on the plug. Mine went on me until i guy on whilpool suggested cuddling it for 5 mins - he was right - it warmed up a connection that got it going...for a while. But Sandy's talkin about a modem.....so im irrelevant again.
July 21, 200915 yr Which model? Router or modem? I have never turned my router off in over, approximately, 3 years. Transmission output is overclocked a tad too. I can't remember the modem, got rid of it ages ago. It had 4 connections off it however so it may be fine when there isn't so much pressure on it. http://www.deadlycombinationclan.com/anaraith/sig/rotate.php FEAR ME I AM PITA BREAD
July 21, 200915 yr I have 4 computers hooked up, 2 wireless, 2 ethernet, and a SPA3000 which is VOIP. So 3 ethernet ports are being used constantly. Modems do have poor reputation for Linksys. http://imgur.com/e5y6e.gif You've already ruined these forums for me, I have no desire to read your rhetoric or the pathetic arguments you get yourself in to, or the personal vendetta you have against me, so please, do not talk to me. July 21, 200915 yr Author I updated the firmware... but it is still a problem... only Google Images does it... "When you have to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite." - Winston Churchill
July 21, 200915 yr More than likely a flood protection thing within the modem. http://users.on.net/~mperrin/images/les_mis_kindros.png You're all wrong, and I am always right, and the sooner you accept it, the happier you will be. That is all! Va Fan Culo
July 21, 200915 yr what OS are you using? Reason Being i had windows 7 installed and it kept shutting down my net connect where i would have to reboot the modem to fix it. Edited July 21, 200915 yr by x-spades-x why?
July 21, 200915 yr depends on how ur network is setup. i personally would steer clear from dlink products full stop just too many stories i hear about how crap they are. i used to have a problem with connecting to adobe website but that was due to my modem not recognizing the ip address properly as adobe had a 192.168.x.x class b address. only way to fix that was to get a new modem. my setup is basically internet -> dynalink modem -> asus router -> linksys router w/wirelss asus: 2 pc connected, custom tomato firmware linksys: 3 wired device (ps3, xbox360, pc), 3 wireless device( laptop, ipod, cellphone), custom wrt-dd firmware. how many devices are connected to your router/modem sandy? have you tried setting it to halfbridge mode to test if its just the modem causing it?
July 21, 200915 yr I think i got a speedstream 4200, it Dies when i launch cod5 mp never knew the cause, this could shed some light. I had exactly this problem python. Replaced my modem with a newer model and it is all good again. It was actually only when I did a server refresh that it would drop its' load and I had to restart it at the wall. http://www.clan-tea.com/sigs/2011/Rec0n3.png
July 22, 200915 yr Author If I use Picsearch : http://www.picsearch.com/ it does the same thing as Google images but does not break the adsl connection. I think I'll just use alternative image searches from now on. curiouser and curiouser "When you have to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite." - Winston Churchill
July 23, 200915 yr how many pc are running off the modem? have you tried half bridge mode too see if it still there?
July 23, 200915 yr Author one PC I don't understand "half-bridge" - what's this ? ... "When you have to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite." - Winston Churchill
