Posted June 3, 200915 yr Well i've been planning on getting a laptop for a long time, and today got a letter in the mail from the government and as part of my apprentiship i get some cashola, so i'm thinking i might get one in the next couple weeks, i don't wanna spend more than 1k (give or take $100) i'm thinking of getting the $999 lenovo from msy http://www.msy.com.au/notebook/notebook.pdf what are your thoughts? will i be able to play PR on this? can i change the graphics card on it ect? i will mostly be using it for playing video games, but will be used for recording and a few other un-important things that it will be able to do if it can play PR stay on topic, anyone else know of other sites or places where i can get good deals on laptops in victoria?
June 3, 200915 yr You cant play pr on an integrated GMA card afaik. The only one there with deticated GFX is in QLD for 1300 Edited June 3, 200915 yr by Jono from Marketing http://i.imgur.com/rfTYp.png
June 3, 200915 yr Yeah vanilla BF2 wont even run on any intel GMA's as far as im aware. Look for something like 8600GM 9600Go basically laptop versions of the nvidia chipsets. They usually say 256mb or 512mb deticated. http://i.imgur.com/rfTYp.png

June 3, 200915 yr Hey Zardz, The problem with the laptop is as Kush said, it has an integrated graphics card, as in on the motherboard. You will most likely be able to play PR on it however you will more than likely have issues with it running at reasonable level. You are not able to change a video card in a laptop. If you are really wanting a laptop for the primary purpose of gaming than the minimum in my opinion would be the "QLD Only" one and it will only cut the cheese for so long (IE, its not a great graphics card and will be good for PR but no guarantee's beyond that like ArmA2 etc.) If you want a machine that will perform like a desktop but in a laptop (Gaming wise) you will pay 1.5 to 2x more. http://www.clan-tea.com/sigs/flames/Poncho-Temp.png Orders starting with SOMEBODY usually wind up being completed by NOBODY.
June 3, 200915 yr + 1 to IBM (Lenovo), good machines. http://www.clan-tea.com/sigs/flames/Poncho-Temp.png Orders starting with SOMEBODY usually wind up being completed by NOBODY.
June 3, 200915 yr Author keep em comin kids. that site is pretty good noddy, but wont give me many details. as far as i can tell its about 100$ cheaper than msy, but it wont tell me much about the cards.
June 3, 200915 yr most the lower spec laptops have integrated gpu's. http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/auepp/StdAffinityPortal/en_AU/catalog.workflow:category.details?current-catalog-id=3634951826AE4D3881BFFF1AC5FCD957¤t-category-id=80BE9A6B3B13415994755F2BAA41520B click on the customise (sic) button and it'll give you the details - but you have to go to the L500 15.4'' notebook - Recommended model to move away from that.. (and it's > than the $ limit you were after) http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/yy116/IINoddyII/aux1_zpsab5224fd.png

June 3, 200915 yr I can guarantee that you won't go wrong with an ASUS M50VC. Use it for everything, School work, PR on Med-High, L4D High, heaps of others including MS Flight SimX. 512mb Dedicated Nvidia 9600M http://i.imgur.com/DtNdckc.png [WC]Xavo|xXx:
June 3, 200915 yr yea as others have said be careful. i've got a friend who has a lappy and he can't play diddly swat on it! all because of the integrated graphics.
June 3, 200915 yr integrated graphix are the devil! like others have said, get on that mentions either ATI/nVidia graphix BUT mention dedicated ram, avoid the ones that say 'shared' 'turbo memory' 'hyper memory' etc as they pretty much just mean "you get less RAM cos your g/card is using some and its gonna suckz0rz!" There comes a time in every musician's life when they must decide what instrument they should master. Few. If any are ever worthy enough to master. The cowbell.
June 3, 200915 yr As others have said, don't really go below a 8600GS/GTM, especially for something like BF2. The only problem, is that you're looking at ~$1500 minimum for a decent gaming laptop (and when I say decent I mean not absolute min spec because you'll regret that in the future). http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. June 3, 200915 yr Last month I brought a Dell Studio 15 laptop, it plays PR on high settings with pretty decent fps on most maps(the occcassional drops on Fallujal West). http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-studio-1555?c=au&cs=audhs1&l=en&s=dhs The laptop going for $1299 is the one i brought. It has a great feel to it, feels pretty solid and works great. http://www.bigd.com.au/_bigdfiles/sigs/mh-sig-2016-11.png

For just basic computing, you can probably dip to $700-900... although I'm not sure what 'recording' encompasses. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. June 3, 200915 yr ooo this looks good, anyone got any idea where i can get best deal on this (warranty and stuff) only a few hundred more than what i'd hope cheers pilot K I'll answer as best I can - this thing was a birthday present/for doing well at school Dad found out about from a guy who does his computers and he recommended this one and got it from his own supplier or something like that. AFAIK it costs around $1700, apparently there was a cheaper one somewhere else. DXdiag Specs - Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26Ghz 2046mb RAM Nvidia 9300M GS 512mb dedicated (whoops made a mistake earlier) Realtek Digital Output (High Definition) Good little system, as I said before I can run PR on med-high and others like L4D with pretty much High settings. Flight SimX was a bit laggy so it's turned down a bit - but I haven't played it in a while soo... Planning on preordering ArmA 2 this weekend, so I'll let ya know how it runs that. It ran the ArmA1 demo on med-high, but I never got the full game. I gotta go to dinner now, if you need any more help just ask, more than happy to help. http://i.imgur.com/DtNdckc.png [WC]Xavo|xXx:

Those ones are better than mine as well, 4Gb RAM & a P9400 320GB HDD and one has an ATI 4570 512mb Edited June 3, 200915 yr by BaseJump http://i.imgur.com/DtNdckc.png [WC]Xavo|xXx:
