Posted May 27, 200915 yr Well like every other thread I'm gonna start with a budget I have about $1300-1400 for a new reasonable PC... I'm basically looking for something that will be able to play all the latest games without to much struggle, and preferably something i will be able to buy upgrades for without to much trouble... I already have my eye on a few parts that i thought looked pretty So basically i only need motherboard (preferably Asus or gigabyte) , video card, RAM, Power supply, harddrive (only need about 500 Gig) and whatever i missed out on advice these are the 2 parts i want to base everything around.. Thermaltake V9 case (nothing special it just looks cool) http://computeralliance.com.au/parts.aspx?qryPart=9847 Intel E8400 (recommended by local PC shop guy) http://computeralliance.com.au/parts.aspx?qryPart=8788 Edited May 27, 200915 yr by f00bear http://i.imgur.com/zoL1k.png

May 27, 200915 yr haha.. KFC (clan member) killed my love for these types of threads with his procrastination and constant whining..... To give you a bit of background he kept changing his mind about proposed configs for about 12 months...... suspect he just liked the attention Not that you are going to be like that. Also check http://www.staticice.com.au for prices Don't worry about ddr3 or i7 processors yet imo Western Digital are better than Seagate imo Don't spend too much on a gpu - just get one which'll do the job you want now - you'll never have the latest or greatest. If you're main purpose is gaming with headset - onboard sound should be good enough. EDIT > That's actually a E8400 cpu... brilliant choice - overclocks a dream. Check http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=717&p=0 for destructions EDIT2 > hope i've proved my lub for joo now Edited May 27, 200915 yr by Sapper28 http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/yy116/IINoddyII/aux1_zpsab5224fd.png
May 27, 200915 yr Maybe it's just you shadow? I recently built a box kinda-sorta-based-around whirlpools $700 bang-for-buck list (except I got 4850, which i'm quite in love with right now) and I'm very happy with it, haven't had anything stress it too much yet. So for $1400 to spend you'll be laughing!

May 27, 200915 yr If you're set on the E8400, DDR2 800mhz will allow you to overclock to 3.6ghz, or 1066mhz will allow 4.8ghz, so take your pick. For gaming you don't really need to bother too much with timings nor excess ram speed above the 1:1 overclock ratio for processor FSB & mem frequency. Considering the rock bottom prices of ram these days, I'd say a minimum of 4GB should be considered (2x2gb) or 6GB could be an option (3x2gb), it's what I run. That V9 looks like a red version of the twelve hundred with only 1 front intake By the way, you may wish to consider finding intake filters for it if none are included... I can tell you that 120mm fans can pull a considerable amount of dust into a case, especially in a carpeted room like mine... and with a case window that size you're not going to want your cards/PSU/HSF caked in dust... that's just tacky. PSU is my usual response, the HX-620 unless someone has a better suggestion (I still am yet to find a PSU that beats it for modularity, price, wattage/amperage and near-silent operation). I'd hit up WD for the 500GB sata2, just don't get suckered in by the "green" drives' lower price, they only rotate at 5400rpm vs 7200rpm of regular ones and thus you have longer seeks and shoddier performance overall. If you're considering overclocking at some point, you might as well put a decent HSF on to start with, to save you the trouble of faffing around with it down the track... the TRU E120 and Noctua U12-P/C range are excellent choices in this regard, however expect around ~$80-100 for the whole setup. Another consideration in this vein is replacing your 120mm fans with the Noctua range, as they're renowned for their near-silent operation. Will you also be upgrading your peripherals at this point? Things to consider are: - Do you have a need for speakers? I bought 5.1 logitechs and use them maybe once in a couple of months... my USB headsets are fine. If you're some sort of audiophile (*cough* SOP *cough* ) then perhaps a high end soundcard is worthwhile... however there's some really nice USB gaming headsets available around the $80-130 range. - Is your screen capable of displaying the awesome glory of your new box? Gaming on less than a 22" these days isn't gaming at all - Don't look past a l33t gaming mouse, it adds +5 FPS at least... because some of the processing is offloaded onto the onboard DPI processor [i may be talking out of my various sphincters at this point] - If you fly, is your joystick a saitek, if not... why not? Finally, the all important graphics card. Big choice here is how important graphics quality is to you, over raw frames per second. If you just want a basic runner that can handle things at medium with >= 100fps, I'd say go midrange... otherwise in my opinion it's always nice to have at least 3 months of "mmm wow so pretty" until the next badly coded crysis comes out and your GPU is sent limping home with welts on its backside. Typical recommendations in this camp are: Nvidia ------------- Cheap : GTX 250 Bang for buck: GTX216+ [260sp] Good value: GTX275 Don't be silly: GTX295 ATI ------------- Cheap & Great value: 2x HD4770 Crossfire Bang for buck: 4770 or 4850 Good value: 4890 1gb Don't be silly: HD4870x2 http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. May 27, 200915 yr Author Psyrus i love you more that Noddy now... May 27, 200915 yr Author Umm thats still being debated... Might get one of my friends to give me a hand with it, but i might play it safe and get a professional to do it. http://i.imgur.com/zoL1k.png
May 27, 200915 yr better than my 8800gts about this well: http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/3715/112232498us4gp0.png meh do it yourself - tbh you can't stuff it up too badly... the most difficult thing is getting the cpu cooler on (cos they are a pain to have them 'seat' properly).... And don't forget the mb risers (to lift the mb off the case chassis) Edited May 27, 200915 yr by Sapper28 http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/yy116/IINoddyII/aux1_zpsab5224fd.png
May 27, 200915 yr Well it's something I believe anyone who buys custom parts [iE non preboxed ACER/Dell bs] should know how to do, but I realize it can be daunting, and you're still a wee one so I'm not going to be insistent as I usually am. In any case, the GTX260 is a great card price to performance wise, however make sure you get the 260+ with 216(stream processors) otherwise you're sacrificing performance because of older stock (it's a newer revision of the 260). The advantage to staticice is that you can shop around and save money on certain parts, allowing you splurge a little on others, whereas getting it at just one shop you're subject to their various margins. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. May 27, 200915 yr Author Mkay thanks guys i think i have everything i need... I mainly just decided on the stuff i posted here (will probably take Psyrus's advice with the GPU though) And i probably will build it myself fingers crossed nothing breaks Any further suggestions are welcome http://i.imgur.com/zoL1k.png
May 27, 200915 yr meh do it yourself - tbh you can't stuff it up too badly... the most difficult thing is getting the cpu cooler on (cos they are a pain to have them 'seat' properly).... And don't forget the mb risers (to lift the mb off the case chassis) Exactly. Those are the only two things which i was unsure of and it was my first build in about 10 years. Everything worked fine first go, I think people are a little too paranoid about static etc. these days...
May 27, 200915 yr Post up a final build with prices and chosen accessories so it can be fully critiqued, that way you'll get the best possible performance for your cash. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man.
