Looking at options for a new medem/router with Wireless and a decnt new filter. Getting a fair fewe dropouts lately and coming up to end of tax year, thinking about "investing" in some new hardware.

What brands and or models of modem/router/wireless and what filter are people using. I currently have a DLink filter and DLink G605T modem/router.

Good link to check out...

Friend bought a Draytek which was suppose to be very very good, he enjoyed it, haven't heard anything else on them tho...

Yep, do the whirlpool search for whatever keywords you can think of. Does it need to be adsl2+?

There will be plenty of information in there.

Don't forget VOIP too.

Just did a search for the modem my friend bought after heavy whirlpooling:

Dynalink RTA1025W

All good for him.

You've already ruined these forums for me, I have no desire to read your rhetoric or the pathetic arguments you get yourself in to, or the personal vendetta you have against me, so please, do not talk to me. Ever. About anything.

Just bought a Billion 7401 RGP V3 to go with my shiny new ADSL2+ service, and couldn't be happier. VOIP support, easy interface, no dropouts (so far). Gets my thumbs up.

Billions have served me pretty well... I hated my DLINKs because their firewall rules were naisty at best

Forgot to iterate, I also own a Billion.

Billion 5100, cheap as ADSL1 modem that is bridged and a WRT54GL does all the work with a third-party firmwarfe called Tomato.

The 5100 is 5 years old, never been turned off (besides blackouts or holidays) and is still perfectly fine.

Hey Gazza,

Yep, Billion 7404VGP here. It does the whole wireless/wired/routing thing really well, but what it does brilliantly is VOIP. I have a 4 handset cordless phone plugged into the router and have my VOIP (engin) service enabled within the router.

So, when my VOIP number rings, I get a unique ring tone on the cordless compared to when my landline rings. If I dial out, the router actually chooses which number to dial out from based on a routing table (eg, local and national calls go VOIP cause they are free, 000 and mobile calls go out on the landline). If you want to override this with the handset you just press send twice before dialling.

Honestly, this has been a huge boon for us as we run a business at home on the VOIP number and having distinctive ring tones is great. You can actually setup multiple simulatanous VOIP numbers too.

I've had the Billion for nearly 3 years now and it has been brilliant and very P2P/BF2 friendly as well :)

Hmm. Billion seem popular, also notice PLE stock pretty much only them, so figured they might be worthwhile. Have to figure out whether to toss my Linksys (SPA-3000) ATA device and use all in one device. QOS would certainly be nice. Thanks

On the line filter side what do people use. I had a Telequip but recently was told that filters don't last that long, so have swapped an old DLink back in, but looking to buy a new one - people seem to be touting Jackson C10 from Bunnings or Officeworks? I notice Billion do one also, so might get one.

The C10 is a central line filter (actually, I believe there is the central and an inline with the c10 name), which are the bees knees and will usually fix/replace any wiring problems in your house. These need to be installed by an electrician usually so the cost is far greater.

As for normal filters, I've got a few lying around the house, I've tested them all and they all work the same. No great improvements over each other.

Yeah Gaz - shouldn't be any reason at all why a filter would wear out, that sounds like a bit of a furphy. Generally the biggest problems that occur are in the quality of the wiring - especially if there is any verdegris on the connections from the street to the house or if there are lots of older style extensions around. If you can, disconnect *everything* else except the wiring straight to the router from the street and then once it is working try adding the other things back on.

just use the belkin filter that came with my router from iiNet, never had an issue with that.
