Tasmania.. Must see locations, HELP PLEASE

Hey All....

Taking the family to Tasmania in August for a 9 night stay...

Never been there before, but know it is very picturesque.. Taking the SLR for some nice pics & am told it will be cold..

We are sorting out our itinery of which will include Cradle Mountain.

Am looking at basing ourselves in one spot for two to three nights and driving out to locations from there...

Any suggestions, must see's and general advice to make the most of our time...

Thanks in advance..:plane:

at school we had a choice on camps and one of them was Tassie, and apparently its spectacular, make sure you see the wilderness heritage areas too, pristine stuff.

Re: Tasmania.. Must see locations, HELP PLEASE

where are you flying into ?

Flying into Hobart on Tiger... Real cheap!

Hiring a car & going from there.. Maybe Launceston first, then stay at or near cradle mountain, then Pt Arthur & Hobart..

Thought to work our way round anti clockwise??

We have to end up the night before at or near Hobart for the flight out...

Re: Tasmania.. Must see locations, HELP PLEASE

Come to Launceston and see the Gorge. It's amazing, a massive ravine runs through from past Duck Reach Power and right into the city.. in the middle, just 15 minutes walk from the city centre is the First Basin.. a gigantic opening in the middle of the mountain that is just beautiful.. not only does it have the worlds longest unsupported cable-ride expanse but it's also where I proposed to Kelly.

The Heritage highway is a nice trip also, used to be the main road and now has a series of small towns along it that have worked hard to make it worth your trip.

Other than that just drive around up and down the coasts (East Coast is the more populated). You might just make it around in 9 days too... it's a lot bigger down here than people think.

You'll love it here.

Im up on the top north west coast, nothing tourist wise up here really, but what mellie said is perfect.

You will enjoy it.

Re: Tasmania.. Must see locations, HELP PLEASE

take your sister?

nah only kidding. Like what Polden says, the north west coast - pretty far off the beaten track...i would love to see that country...

Re: Tasmania.. Must see locations, HELP PLEASE

when we went to tassy cradle mountain was defenitately the most beautiful place, so your on the right track there.

the most fun we had was on the south coast when we took an extremely fast boat tour round the coast and saw some whales, seals, caves etc. that was really cool :) (note however that women will not enjoy it, the boat goes extremely fast :D).

Re: Tasmania.. Must see locations, HELP PLEASE

IF you can go around the West side as well, really nice Rainforests and a nice drive.

Dont be fooled by the distances on the map though and how small the place looks. Alot of the roads go up and down and all around so it takes alot longer than you would expect.

Also (and happy to be proven wrong) the hole in the ozone layer sometimes covers Tassie and therefore even though its 25 degrees you can fry pretty easily.

just to put things in perspective with day traveling. hobart to launceston is 2 hours , hobart to queenstown direct is 4 hours, launceston to smithton is 3 hours, burnie to queenstown 3 hours.

Dont think 150k on the map is a 1 1/2 hour trip, a lot of the states roads are marked with time to next town not distance as often your average speed is under 60km.

Have fun and if your after any details about places just pm me , if i dont know im sure to know someone who does.

Re: Tasmania.. Must see locations, HELP PLEASE

The Cadbury factory in Hobart area is pretty cool to go see. When we went, we kind of did a round trip. It was a while ago now, so my memory is a little off.

We landed in Launceston, then kind of made our way down to Crescent lake, stopping at some rainforests. Millers bluff rings a bell too. Hobart area was next, which included the Cadbury factory tour. We went to Port Arthur, very spooky place, we actually went there not long after the shooting. They were tearing a lot of the buildings down, and there were very apparent bullet holes in many places.

Then we made our way towards Queenstown, stopping at the Derwent bridge.

Cradle mountain Burnie, then Devenport. Back to Launceston to fly home.

think we were there for about 10 days to 2 weeks.

You're all wrong, and I am always right, and the sooner you accept it, the happier you will be. That is all!

Re: Tasmania.. Must see locations, HELP PLEASE

Cadbury no longer takes tours.

But port arthur is a great place to visit, for many reasons.

Quite a experience to stand at the memorial, and the convict heritage side of it is cool. Should do the ghost tour, thats great fun.

Good point Darth... we have next to no ozone above us.. and as Darth says even at 25 the sun has a LOT of bite to it.

A few great spots among many great spots:

- Frecinet Nat Prk/peninsula

- Mt Field Nat Park

- Lake Pedder

- Stahan (?)

- Salamanca Markets @ Hobart

- Mt Wellington @ Hobart

- Port Arthur

...but we tend for the 'ecotourist' angle, depends on what you're after.

Re: Tasmania.. Must see locations, HELP PLEASE

Isn't there some great beach on the north east coast...won some world wide award recently? googled it, Bay of Fires http://www.smh.com.au/news/news/lonely-planet-names-tasmanias-bay-of-fires-worlds-top-spot/2008/10/19/1224351032596.html

Also that wine glass bay looks nice http://www.touringtasmania.info/wine_glass_bay.htm

And there's some place up the Huon valley where they have like 400 year old Huon pine trees.

Re: Tasmania.. Must see locations, HELP PLEASE

Way down south, there's a place called Geevestone, and nearby, there's a tourist attraction called the Tahune Air Walk. It's pretty well out of the way (about an hour and a half from Hobart) but it's simply awesome! Metal catwalks over 100m up in the tree canopy of some seriously old forest. There are walks there (easy ones) all over the place, and it's just a beautiful place to spend an hour or three. WELL worth it.

Hobarts really nice. Had a night there last month, wish it was longer. If you get the chance, there's a really nice drive south of Hobart along the coast. Some of the towns have a lot to offer, and the drive itself is really cool. Lunch at Peppermint Bay is particularly good :)

Lots to see, just drive! Way cool place to cruise around. Also, if possible, head back in summer some other time - place is totally different every time I've been.

Binalong bay up to Ansens bay is considered "the bay of fires"

http://maps.google.com.au/maps?ie=UTF8&om=1&ll=-41.030161,148.365898&spn=0.116028,0.324097&t=h&z=12

I have a friend with a shack at Ansens bay, that beach up to Eddystone might see maybe 200 people a year . There are no roads to it, you can drive to maybe 2k from it and walk the rest.

It is incredible.

Binalong bay and north from there is more accessable for a family on a car trip.

Wineglass bay is another classic Tassie icon.

  • 2 months later...

Hey guys...Just a quick question...I am planning at two week road trip down to Tasmania and wanted to know if anyone has been there that could recommend some good spots to visit...

If anyone has some good info...I would love to hear it..

Thanks....

PS...I will most likely meet a Bearded lady at the local pub.....but I am willing to deal with that...

Edited by SwiftNinja

It helps to know what you are in to?.. So...

Jump into my squad this evening and remind me about your trip..

I spent 30 days travelling around Tassie in a van and took my time doing it.

Even though Tassie is small you need so much time to view the wonders and appreciate it all . (locals included)

Have heaps of good places that i am more than willing to share.. talk to you in game about it.

Tassie appreciation squad :cowboy:
