Hey

Im basically sick to death of Fitness First, for reasons I wont go into (No, didnt get scammed or locked into something I couldnt get out of).

Has anyone used/use/been to a PCYC and used their weights area? If so, whats it like?

Thinking of walking to the PCYC (I live about 20 mins walk away from one) and maybe joining there and saving hundreds of dollars....

mine is called "Trips Gym of Awesomness"

u dont need to pay money to exercise and train! use that money to buy you own gear and u always have it!

BigW, Kmart, and even Aldi supermarkets have cheap weight training and work benches....

i have a set of weights, a road bike, a dog, an compfy running shoes.

dont buy a work station thingy if u dont have room... jus hand weights with changable weights, a 2nd hand road bike, and some good running shoes.... that will get u fit, may not get u ripped. but fit and some tone.... plus Protien Shakes lots of protien shakes, after exercise and inbetween meals... 3 a day. :)

but dont have the shakes if your not exercising... they will jus make u fat! :p

plus if dont already play a very active team sport.... ie afl, basketball, or hockey, very active sports all need strength, stamina, and areobic/cardio fitness.

Long ago I went to PCYC for boxing (had our own boxing ring and training gear etc at the pcyc center) .. Recent years I did alot of gym, Now I do everything at home.

I think PCYC will be cheaper either way as its like a community thing and not as motivated for money like regular gyms.

But like bahlye said, I wouldnt expect them to have the latest and greatest range of gear like big expensive gyms do.. Worth a look tho.

Yer, Fees First suck big time I learnt that long ago.

I'm guessing you live in Sydney if you're looking at a PCYC, from my experience each one varies depending on location and funding so maybe it's best to look around.

Or try and find a local gym that's not a chain they're generally cheaper, more friendly and you're supporting local business.

Braaaaaaaarp!

Go to a rock climbing gym and start bouldering....awesome for upper body strength, arms (especially fore arms), pecks, abbs, back and a super strong grip. Also invovles problem solving so good for the mind. And did I mention FUN!!! :D

Yeh Aresnik Fitness First pretty much has the lower north shore locked down, thats the prob. Iv checked out the north sydney leagues club gym but the people there were so snooty it turned me off and I ended up storming out because they wouldnt even let me walk through the gym and see it because I didn't have ID with me.

thanks

listen to the man, he knows his business!!! do yourself a favor and become a gorilla guardiner, just take your shovel to random gardners, dig up plants then plant them back in the same spot so you dont have to fork out for new ones. oh yeah, take your wheel barrow as well so you can fill it and run round.

if anyone cares

I checked out the PCYC and its really, really good. They have an awesome boxing set up (few state level boxers train there) and a really good weights area. Its no frills stuff which I like (i hate the corporate, bright shiny bull**** fitness first atmosphere). Also the dude who runs the gym is a competitive powerlifter whos won quite a few comps who will be interesting to talk to.

and the best bit? $15 a month!! too good to be true, almost....

Is that at North Sydney? I used to train there with Mark Pitts and Arnel Barotillo, not sure if he still coaches there any more it was quite a few years ago but it was a decent PCYC back then.

I remember when I was at Campbelltown PCYC it cost me $2 for boxing and taekwondo classes.

Which is why I was disappointed when I moved to Melbourne as there are very few PCYC's about. Now it costs me $100 a month to train.

I have free use of the Brisbane council run gym complex on Klump Rd at Mt Gravatt. When I work in the city, there I use the PCYC gym at Suncorp Stadium (also free). I think that costs $28 a year to join PCYC and $8 per session. It has all the good equipment, is massive, has numerous trained staff and about 6 people who regularly use it. Most of the staff walk around waiting for someone to come in.

In Brisbane now there are Jet gyms. I think there is 1 on the northside and 1 at West End. They run 24/7 which suits me well.

I also have a combo set at home but if you dont have the space the gym is the way to go. Make sure you get to know some people who attend so you can hold each other accountable and support each other. I hate going to gym and not talking to anyone.

Besides that, do as many crunches, pushups and running as you can do each morning. And most importantly cut out the crap food.

I've lost a lot of body fat and am getting pretty big. The missus loves it.

I became a fat bastard when I came to Oz. It was too hot for me to skateboard anymore, good thing I'm used to it now and back out riding.

I'd never felt 40C plus before. It took 2 years to get used to it. -40C and lower is easy compared to the 45's I've felt here.
