Posted May 3, 200915 yr Tech gurus and all round helpy people i summon thee! i need some advice on my new pooter, im not into that whole build your own thing, and buying induvidual parts is to confusing, so i just need to know: How much RAM, what graphics card, that kind of thing. And is it worth waiting for windows 7 to get one, cause i dont really mind waiting, i just want to know what people who have tried it think about it. (if this is confusing, i might re write it) ATM money isnt really an issue EDIT - it is a desktop not a laptop Edited May 3, 200915 yr by AIF LANKY
May 3, 200915 yr If you want over 3gb of ram, which is really the standard these days, get a 64 bit version of windows vista. If you can get a decent computer now, there will be no troubles upgrading it to windows 7. I would suggest getting at least 4gb of ram, 512mb graphics and 2.40ghz processor. Also, is this a desktop or laptop?
May 3, 200915 yr I built a new PC for the first time about 3 months ago and it's really not as scary as it seems. If you wanna have a crack at building your own and want to know what parts etc, theres plenty of people on the forums who will point you in the right direction. I spent about NZ$1k on parts and it runs mint as. Edit: and I still havent put new HDD or DVD Writer in. Too lazy Edit2: get a big case, I got a little one and its impossible to keep everything tidy. May 3, 200915 yr mudo, someone will be along shortly who can put a computer together for your needs using the MSY part list, then all you have to do is email that parts list to msy i think they charge $70 to put it all together for you, all you have to do is pick it up, i'd put together that list for you but i dont know heaps about the current market as i built my current PC about 9 months ago.
May 3, 200915 yr Just read up on the internet... 'twas what I did and now I charge people $50 for my services BASICALLY* what i learnt was... if it doesn't fit, plug it into another hole until everything's plugged. *note: "basically" meaning that's the gyst of it http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/merc.bmp On the topic of shiny auscam... the sound they made while bush walking made it seem like I was doing mean things to little furry animals inside my pants

May 3, 200915 yr so is MSY, the place to buy from or are there better sites? http://i.imgur.com/DtNdckc.png [WC]Xavo|xXx:
May 3, 200915 yr when my bro was building his we ran into a realy good site it's called static ice it searches for the best price for you and you can sort by state, it will always gives you the best price at any store check it out. oh and I almost forgot it only works if you have the names of the items your looking for so once you have a rough idea of what your getting enter it all and it will find you all the sites and stores with the best price. May 3, 200915 yr When you guys are searching for your computer parts... to find good prices use: http://www.staticice.com If you want specific to your state, at the end of your query append: state:[statecode] eg - state:wa Then it'll show WA stores only for me. Darn it beaten... although his was tiny and mine is big :disgust: Edited May 3, 200915 yr by Husker http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. May 3, 200915 yr Staticice is fine, but MSY/Umart, while not known for their customer service, usually have the cheapest prices for a majority of items. So, it's easier to grab everything from the same store, rather than staticice over the country (unless you need specific items). MSY has the worst website known to man, but the ordering and pickup process are very simple and painless. P.S. Murdock, money is always an issue. Wasting money isn't a fun thing to do. Edit: Read Smokejumper's buying thread, titled something like 'Start with the case and fill it', it has heaps of suggested systems in there. I'm one of those people who will generally have to take at least 2 components back [due to DOA] because I have the worst PC hardware luck known to man. If they're gonna stuff me around on the warranty I won't go near them. If MSY have a decent warranty/swap service I know where I'm going for my next components :hi: http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. May 3, 200915 yr Never had to deal with it. /cross fingers. I use MSY as they opened a store in an industrial estate near me, which means I didn't have to ride the motorbike to Umart any more. The selection isn't as broad as it could be, but I make exceptions with what they have. I've probably bought 3-4 complete systems through them and the only issue I had was slow email response due to their high workloads, the prices went up from the original mail to the last mail by $16. I complained, but still cheaper than anywhere else. Do a search at Whirlpool and OCAU, you know what you will come up with. http://imgur.com/e5y6e.gif You've already ruined these forums for me, I have no desire to read your rhetoric or the pathetic arguments you get yourself in to, or the personal vendetta you have against me, so please, do not talk to me. May 3, 200915 yr Do a search at Whirlpool and OCAU, you know what you will come up with. I've ran those searches... and that's why I'm scared Although I haven't seen too many MSY horror stories on WP lately... http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. May 3, 200915 yr Haha, yeah I know. But those people complain the loudest. To be honest, I never even checked the warranty stuff, just expecting to deal with it when it comes up. I've warrantied a case before and that took weeks (different retailer), also some OCZ ram direct with OCZ (which was less painful just took a while from the states and back). The whole warranty experience, especially with retailers operating on a shoestring, I just to expect to be terrible since they can't absorb a replacement or return. http://imgur.com/e5y6e.gif You've already ruined these forums for me, I have no desire to read your rhetoric or the pathetic arguments you get yourself in to, or the personal vendetta you have against me, so please, do not talk to me. Do you need mouse/kb/monitor/case? AMD or Intel? One is budget, one can be expensive. Depends on your usage. RAM is minimum 4GB of DDR2 800 (can be cheap ram like Kingston). Graphics card is dependant on what you want to play, at what resolution, at what expense. I would use an old copy of XP 32 bit, write off that small amount of RAM that isn't available (you will never notice it not there), and use Windows 7 64bit when it's available. http://imgur.com/e5y6e.gif You've already ruined these forums for me, I have no desire to read your rhetoric or the pathetic arguments you get yourself in to, or the personal vendetta you have against me, so please, do not talk to me. May 3, 200915 yr For those in the know, I'm looking at upgrading, (note previous desktop is a p4 3.0ghz, so its basically a whole new system) what I'm looking at: P5Q-Pro $199 E8400 $255 4GB Kingston $74 Seagate SATA 500G $84 GB 896M GTX 275 $387 ASUS U-65GA 650W $169 Logitech MX5500 $174 Total $1342 Is this a good system/value for money as a mid range gaming beast? http://www.adam.com.au/otaylor/gsa-sig.jpg
May 3, 200915 yr Author so you bought yours from this place, have you had any problems at all with them?, cause im afraid if i do it, it will go caput
May 3, 200915 yr Just go to a local non mainstream PC shop, have a chat to them, tell them what they want and find out their price and compare it to an online seller.. Thats what i did and I'm only gonna pay about $50 extra AND if anything goes wrong I'll be able to take it down to the guy and get it fixed for cheap http://i.imgur.com/zoL1k.png
May 3, 200915 yr The last time i was in my local MSY store...i had been in the que for about 20 minutes when a middle aged guy comes in and forces himself on a sales guy, he starts to tell his story about how his new PC don't work properly, and wants a refund etc etc....i giggled to my self as i knew what was coming. Well the sales guy calls out the back for the manager and the manager just shuffles the disgruntled customer out the door...telling him he will have to return fault parts to the factory or aussie reps etc...needs a RMA etc etc. MSY just didn't wana know about it....ive found all cheap shops to be the same. May 3, 200915 yr The list $2 Whore has is very good - I doubt you'd ever go wrong with that as it stands - all top parts, all compatible - all good. Although, as someone else mentioned - make sure the case is big - the new vid cards are around 11" long - unless size is a real factor, make sure you can fit anything and everything.
May 3, 200915 yr I just bought my new system from umart on the gold coast, very quick, easy and cheap. Compared to another store i went to here that was absolutely useless. Hadn't built a pc for 7 years and it went together fine, started first go! Everything's either colour-coded or wont fit where it's not meant to.
May 3, 200915 yr MSY is good in every aspect, sales, service, support. I have dealt with them a fair bit here in Brisbane and they have really only been great. Cynical you might laugh at that but EVERY store you go to anywhere in Australia will have the same end answer, no one is going to give a refund just cause a part died early and he isn't happy. They are going to get the part that is broken and replace it so that he gets a working computer and they don't loose money. MSY are the best store I have come across yet in the many thousands of dollars I have spent on computer parts, my money and others. If you want someone that will sell to you at a great price, will service you as good if not better than most other company's in Australia and generally has English speaking employee's from what I have meet. Go MSY. http://www.clan-tea.com/sigs/flames/Poncho-Temp.png Orders starting with SOMEBODY usually wind up being completed by NOBODY.
May 3, 200915 yr Check out this page for an idea about recommended specs, sure you might find it cheaper but this is a good idea of what you should be able to get for your cash. http://www.overclockers.com.au/wiki/Gaming_Machine http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ee/US_Army_E-2.svg/50px-US_Army_E-2.svg.png http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg
