Gday guys,

Finally got my new pc - E5200, 4gb Ram, Radeon 4850 512mb, vista x32 @ high/1280x1024.

It runs everything i've thrown at it without fault (which is insane compared to how stuff was on my 8 year old pc!), including BF2/PR (FPS wise no problems at all) but I'm getting these major pauses/lags. It was first on starting a round so i used the pb_sleep 500 command which helped but i just played a quick game then and anytime we got into a firefight or i spun around quickly it would pause and i'd end up losing my team or being shot at.

It sounds like a ram thing to me but 4gb should be enough right? I haven't done any major playing around with texture settings yet as it takes so long to reload maps after changes, but I thought I'd ask the question here in case anyone had come across it...?

Also considering a dual-boot with a really ram-lean XP cos im still not convinced on Vista!

Thanking you, hope to see you back on the servers. :hi:

Well for starters your aren't using all that ram because you are running 32bit, so you actually only have about 3GB of ram if you factor in how much allocation is taken up by your 512mb of video ram.

Secondly, its not Vista that is your issue, I use vista and it is pro for games, much better performance wise than XP that likes to clunk around a bit.

I would check your drivers, find updates if able. What HDD are you using it maybe the issue here?

Orders starting with SOMEBODY usually wind up being completed by NOBODY.
I would update your BIOS firstly.

You've already ruined these forums for me, I have no desire to read your rhetoric or the pathetic arguments you get yourself in to, or the personal vendetta you have against me, so please, do not talk to me. Ever. About anything.

I would suggest you defrag your hard drive and turn off file indexing.

I remember not too long ago you were cursing Vista on your own machine ;)

HDD is a WD 640gb Green. I remember seeing something about people suggesting Black over Green so maybe that's a factor.

Drivers for everything are up to date as per downloaded latest everything last week as its a brand new system.

I'll have a mess with settings and see how we go.

well, when you have your slowdowns, is the hdd activity light on and thrashing.

Vista isn't your issue - Vista32 is your issue.....coupled with lack of vram for the IQ settings your using.

PR uses a heap of System RAM, you don't have enough vram or system ram to run PR on Vista 32. 3.5GB addressable - 512 or more for your gfx card & onboard devices - non-local video memory as your 512MB prob won't be enough so will cut into your system memory.... doesn't leave you much....

You really need to go XP32 or Vista 64...or Windows7 - but it doesn't support PB afaik...

With the amount of ram you have you could switch to XP32 and disable your paging file if you wanted.

All fixed, dialed down dynamic shadows and dynamic lights from high to medium and no more problems, even gone higher on everything else.

Thanks for the help everyone :)

turn off file indexing.

If someone is asking advice on a forum about a PC slowdown a bios flash would be the last thing to try.

mine was fixed with a bios update.

I recently bought a E5200, works like a charm but had to Flash my BIOS to a new beta version to even get it to run at full clock speed. This might be a problem for you brodes, if so, check what your clock speed is by using a program such a CPU-Z or checking the clock speed in the BIOS start-up.

The problem with mine is that is was automatically running at half the clock speed and once I updated the BIOS....aaaaaaall good.

Not sugesting its not a valid fix just it may be a little advanced for brodes to do safely. Then again maybe brodes is a uber7331 pc fixer.

:hi:

maybe in the olden days, bios flashing is easy these days, especially with the flash utility being built into the boards.

insert usb key, save bios file, reboot, load utility, flash, reboot. come to think of it, that does sound hard.

it's all in the manual.

Gigabyte has an incredibly easy to use program called @BIOS. You may want to check it out, and you no longer have to flash your bios the old fashioned way. Well, that's what I did anyway.

This could be your mb power saving, mine is throttled when not in use but runs slightly OC'd when needed:)

I love my e5200 its the first intel i've ever had, but it will do anything asked of it :)

And like i said I was only suffering lag in BF2/PR, nothing else, I actually found the solution of dynamic shad/light by googling 'bf2 lag'

Amazing this internet thing is haha :cowboy:

I had this problem and it was because my drivers were to NEW, when i went backwards all was fine again.

With your new system you should be able to max every setting not a problem with no stutter.

Something isn't right.

everything should be maxed, it's a 5 year old game engine remember...

[sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

I run Medium Shadows and Lighting, except I was getting CTD's.

Personally, I can't see the difference between them.

BF2 is 5 years old but PR isn't...PR may be built on the BF2 engine, but it is a LOT more demanding than BF2 and particularly hard on RAM.

Max settings would mean max in CCC or Nvidia Control panel, not in game menu, with all optimizations turned off...and that won't be an option with his specs and OS....

@Brodes

Just on a side note, today a guy on my regular forum (Guru3D), was having the exact same problem as you with a 4870.

There was a problem with the BIOS in that card but it could be just a coincidence.

If you want to run full specs you'll need to go XP or Vista 64 anyway....
