BF2 Looping Sound CTD

Yes, I know there is an issue for this on the EA support forums. It was about as helpful as the bit on C&C's Direct 3D error.

Problem is, I go into almost any map and start to play. Sometimes fine, I can shoot/drive/heal/walk etc. without any issue. On other times...at random intervals the game simply freezes, the last second or so of sound loops (giving me a headache) and the crashes to a flat yellow screen that vanishes to reveal the desktop. I have no way of predicting when this crash happens, but it occurs most often when I'm driving a vehicle! I have tried turing down and off the acceleration on my sound devices/card/whatever Dxdiag shows and that's done nothing. Any help on how to stop or even minimize the instances of these crashes would be good.

Specs:

Intel Pentium 4 3.01Ghz

Nvidia GeForce 6600 with 512Mb onboard memory

1 GB RAM

Motherboard based sound card

Cosonic USB Audio headset

Realtek HD Audio speakers

(Both of which I have disabled to no avail)

Thanks in advance. Feel free to ask for any more info.

When you start up BF2, alt tab it and then bring up the ctrl+alt+del window.

Click the "processes" tab. Find the entry for BF2. Right click on it and go to "set priority" and set it to "low".

See if that does anything.

'fraid not. I tried it both with basic and full acelleration (for the sound devices) and it still happens.

This used to happen to me with vBF2. To fix it, I had to update my motherboard drivers. But also do a dxdiag and make sure all your cards (so graphics and sounds) are being certified and working.

That...doesn't work either. Did all of that when I was trying to get C&C to work, tore Dxdiag apart (virtually!) and nothing changed in BF2. I wonder if it's just my sound card?

are you sure its related to your sound ?

when i alt + tab out of the game for what ever reason i get the same thing, a sound loop that continues until the game minimises.

I also had this happen when i crashed at the end of the loading sequence.

I added more ram and found that the issue went away. The maps in PR take alot more ram that vBF2 and you may find that its just running out of resources.

What other programs do you have running when playing, if something tries to access the internet or load the system, like virus scanners etc you may find the system comes to a grinding halt, that usually ends in BF2 having a crash.

Might be worth investigating.

check by alt + tab out of game, at desktop alt + ctrl + del and look at the system resources being used by BF2.exe (can click on mem usage title to re-order)

Ive seen maps like Al basarh cause this to be as high as 950mb or there abouts. You then have to add windblows and any other programs you use.

There maybe alot of file swapping going on.

I suppose I'll have to get some more RAM then. At least I now (hopefully) know how to fix the problem.

In other news, the EA master sever is now "refusing my connection" just as I was going to turn the settings down and see if that helped. Any idea who's ears I should tear off to fix that?

EDIT: I'm using iinet, so my problem is probably not Telstra related.
