This just started happening within the lats week - noticed it tonight - could not get into a game trying to fix it.

On trying to run BF2 or PR I get a a black screen that lasts for probably 5-10 minutes before any video starts to play.

Even running windowed, it just sits there doing nothing that I can see in ProcExplorer for 5 minutes before it shows any videos?

I have removed PR, BF2 and directories (did not check the registry though) and still the same after reinstalling.. groan.

Any help appreciated, otherwise am wondering whether some new program (just installed IIS and a test work app) plus had Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afqs detected couple of days back (thanks kids) in C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\wmiprvse.exe and C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\wmiprvse.exe.

Your con files might have been stuffed up and it is trying to launch in a non-standard refresh rate. Thanks to EA/Dice's genius, PR will ONLY launch with 60hz...

59? No

70? No

60.00000000000001? Nope

Try this one:

I think i know how to fix this. Go to my documents and then to battlefield 2. then to profiles. Choose whichever one and go to "video" and open this with notepad. Change the htz there to whatever your monitor supports (for me it was 85 from 60) and it should work.

Another potential fix

Ok, I solved the problem. If anyone else who is having this problem, here is what I did.

Went to:

Document > BAttlefield 2 > Profile

-Open up the Audio.con File

- under *AudioSettings.setProvider "software"* Change "software" to "Hardware"

-IT should look like this with change ------> AudioSettings.setProvider "hardware"

So here is how my audio.con file looks like now.

AudioSettings.setVoipEnabled 1

AudioSettings.setVoipPlaybackVolume 1

AudioSettings.setVoipCaptureVolume 1

AudioSettings.setVoipCaptureThreshold 0.1

AudioSettings.setVoipBoostEnabled 0

AudioSettings.setVoipUsePushToTalk 1

AudioSettings.setProvider "hardware"

AudioSettings.setSoundQuality "High"

AudioSettings.setEffectsVolume 1

AudioSettings.setMusicVolume 0.33

AudioSettings.setHelpVoiceVolume 1

AudioSettings.setEnglishOnlyVoices 0

AudioSettings.setEnableEAX 1

Thaks.. I have already deleted the profile directories in total, but also checked video is 800x600@60Hz.

THink the game generally will start, eventually - wel under windowed mode anyway, the fullscreen also seems to load finally but cause I alt-tab while waiting, the graphics get stuffed up.

Will try again in next couple of days and see if works if I am patient?

Damn - wasted good game time tonight!

Hmm.... That is quite odd. Um... maybe a stupid suggestion but a defrag perhaps (maybe one of the files has gone walkabout on your sectors and your HDD is going to look for it or whatever?)...?

Ugh I really don't know about that one then if it's not the sound or graphics con files

Arrgghh. Now when I go to reinstall, my 0.85 core file objects_client.zip it says is corrupt!! Worse still can't find 0.85 on iinet anymore! Slinks off to bed muttering....

I will leave defragment running as some of the BIK files were fragmented, but I have renamed them and still takes forever to start.

I do notice that a Macrovision "Cleanup" process is running under BF2.exe - not sure whether that is unusual?

Have noticed some strange things in event log starting to happen, DCOM wmimprvse not being able to start, some UAStore messages and recently a chkdsk recommendation, so am backing up my stuff onto backup irror disks and will chkdsk the main and likely reinstall windows, as the wmiprvse was mentioned in AV infection.

Thanks for the links

Could it be a failing hard drive?

You've already ruined these forums for me, I have no desire to read your rhetoric or the pathetic arguments you get yourself in to, or the personal vendetta you have against me, so please, do not talk to me. Ever. About anything.

WooHooo! going again, just got to reinstall PR now.. couple of things.. chkdsk cleaned some errors on hard drive, repair install of WinXP followed by the obligatory numerous updates seems to have fixed it. Roto cause then seems to have been probably the Virus which clobbered some system files, complicated by some hard drive corruption. Going to schedule a monthly chkdsk and defrag, specially when I get lockups and have to hard power off - they scare me, as had had a few follow on issues from these.
