Posted April 5, 200916 yr Internetz dropping out Past 7pm. My ISP is TPG, i live in canberra, i am running three computers on my network, and every night for the past week or so my net has been dropping out fairly regularly about every 5-20 minutes. It isnt this first time this has happend, last year it was happening but nowhere near as regularly any of you Tech/Interweb gurus got some help?
April 5, 200916 yr No help here, but it's interesting how I read across forums that TPG customers are starting to have more issues than most. TPG appear to have the best plans so therefore maybe they have too many customers than they can handle. 7pm is peak internetz time, maybe it's congestion related. http://imgur.com/e5y6e.gif You've already ruined these forums for me, I have no desire to read your rhetoric or the pathetic arguments you get yourself in to, or the personal vendetta you have against me, so please, do not talk to me. Ever. About anything.
April 5, 200916 yr Author thats what i was thinking, its just its annoying cause i cant play PR at peak time.
April 5, 200916 yr Wait for Segmentor to jump on, or send him a PM and ask for his advice. It's your right as a customer to complain. If enough people complain maybe they will supply the hardware. I guess, over the years, 5 or 6, that I have been with Internode, I have paid more than my fair share for access but in all that time, I don't think I have ever dropped out. Maybe once or twice, everything has always been entirely smooth. Streaming Radio Paradise through my HTPC right now, getting Ubuntu updates through a local, unmetered mirror and free Usenet access for full speed downloads similar to P2P ilk.. You get what you pay for. http://imgur.com/e5y6e.gif You've already ruined these forums for me, I have no desire to read your rhetoric or the pathetic arguments you get yourself in to, or the personal vendetta you have against me, so please, do not talk to me. April 5, 200916 yr Well, first things first, are you actually losing sync or are you just getting no traffic flow? Get in to your router while you're experiancing the problem and see if it says "connected to ISP" or if it says "disconnected". If you don't want to wait for it to happen again, figure out how to get to the router's logs. It should have "SYNC GAIN" and "SYNC LOSS" messages in there somewhere. If it says "disconnected", your local loop is being interrupted. When you're having the same issues, pick up your handset and see if you can get dial tone. If not, you might have a faulty pair at any of the interconnects between your house and your exchange. Also check your ADSL filter (not much you can check, but make sure it looks ok, no cracks/damage) and the cable between the filter and your router. If all of your equipment looks ok, but it still says "disconnected", log a call to TPG and they'll log a call to Telstra to get the local loop looked at. If it does say "connected", then the issue may be contention or something more severe in TPG's core network. Some things to take note of that might assist the help desk monkeys (if they can handle being given information that isn't on their scripts ...): Can you access national sites, but not international sites? Can you ping a web pages IP address, but not it's URL? Is DNS working, but no traffic getting through? Can you ping other TPG customer's IP addresses? Depending on how they have ICMP control set up in their network, a traceroute may assist them in identifying the cause of the issue. Edited April 5, 200916 yr by efgh146
April 5, 200916 yr It's probably backhaul congestion to your exchange which would be TPG or Telstra's fault. Report it to TPG. Then do the stuff stabby mentioned and report back. If it ends up being a TPG network issue, good luck getting them to do something about it. They're cheap for a reason. XRogerMellieX: "Fiancee is on night shift and I only see her on weekends. April 5, 200916 yr Another beautiful TPG success story. And people are always so vehemently defending them... until the problems happen to them . On that note though, it seems strange to me that you would lose PPP or sync connection due to congestion, I've actually never heard of that before (then again I've never actually worked in the IT comms industry) and to me, it sounds somewhat unreasonable that the two would be related. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. April 5, 200916 yr Another beautiful TPG success story. And people are always so vehemently defending them... until the problems happen to them . True - I'm sick of hearing people say "TPG are fine - I've never had any problems!". Great - base your opinion of an ISP on a sample size of 1. I've heard far too many complaints about TPG's network and customer service compared to other ISPs (with the exception of maybe dodo). Note that this is not a crack at Murdock in any way - I'm just ranting about what I've heard from a large number of people. On that note though, it seems strange to me that you would lose PPP or sync connection due to congestion, I've actually never heard of that before (then again I've never actually worked in the IT comms industry) and to me, it sounds somewhat unreasonable that the two would be related. Losing sync shouldn't happen if it's congestion - that would indicate a line, DSLAM or modem issue. Losing PPP connection can be expected in extreme congestion however, as your PPP connection is usually terminated on an LNS (L2TP network server) back in the ISP's core network, not at the exchange - so if the congestion between your house and the LNS is severe enough (be it on the exchange backhaul or deeper in the ISP network), the PPP session itself will drop out. May 4, 200915 yr Author BUMP!!! well that stuff stabby said didnt do anything really, so im just having 1 last queiry (before the inevitable ISP switch (probably internode)): Could the problem lie in the wiring going to my house, and if that was the case would other people near me be having the same problems.
May 4, 200915 yr Iv been with TPG for about 4 years. About 3 months in (after churning from iinet) I got drop outs inconsistently with absolute jack all help from their reps (online) or the call support center. I got fed up with the crap and was waiting for the plan to end so I could change ISP's again but the problem managed to fix itself somehow (about 4/5 months later) and iv never really had any problems worth mentioning since. Their mandatory transparent proxy is also a tad annoying. cbf spell checking, sorry its its incomprehensible. http://i.imgur.com/rfTYp.png

May 4, 200915 yr meh, flame me down all u want, but im with tpg and have been for 4yrs and havent had anything wrong with my connection. only from me being shaped at the most inconvienent times but i guess thats my fault not tpgs... my folks went for the cheapest plans i had no say i wasnt paying for it, and i cant blame them for choosing a cheap ISP. now that im outta home, i researched ACT providers with ADSL2+ at my exchange and TPG was one. they were cheaper the the competition and most of the other ISP's charged for uploads aswell so they were an automatic no go for me. being a poor uni-student sharing a house with other poor uni students i suggested the cheapest and best option. which was TPG. i know all the bad stories about TPG but honestly i have had nothing wrong with my connection.
