Empire: Total War

Shoot me if I'm wrong, but searchy says nobody's made a thread about this game.

Who's got it? It's absolutely brilliant if you don't, definitely worth a go. The level of detail and realism both tactically and strategically is amazing, and has always been the highlight of the Total War series. If anybody wants to play some multiplayer games against me, that'd be fun since I haven't had a chance to yet.

This video shows a lot of the cool land battle features, despite the annoying commentary: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3i_MgD_DCC8]YouTube - Empire Total War Online Battle #005: France vs Britain[/ame]

Yeah, it's alright... The AI is still a bit meh, and from what I'm reading, it's still a bit "unpolished".

That being said, I'm still having heaps of fun with it, and looking forward to the mods (because apparently TW mods are teh rox!).

Edit: The thing that bugs me the most about the game right now, is the rampant TKing. That's right. If you have, for instance, two regiments of Line Infantry; one in front of the other, the back regiment will simply attempt to shoot through the front regiment. For best results, replace back regiment with Canister Shot Artillery, and the front regiment with General's Bodyguard .

wonder if they'll do a 'cold war' or modern day version of this? would sure beat the hell out of a lot of the normal C&C style RTSs
There comes a time in every musician's life when they must decide what instrument they should master. Few. If any are ever worthy enough to master. The cowbell.

I thought about that, but I just don't think it will work. I think the closest we'll come is World in Conflict.

I heard that some of the AI is a bit retarded like AI cavalry charging your pikemen or a line of defensive wooden stakes. Any truth to that?

But I'll probably give it a look when I get time though. I was a huge fan of Shogun, Rome, and Medieval 2 (Medieval was pretty meh).

Yeah but like WiC the game would probably end up being all about spamming artillery, airstrikes and nukes instead of being anything resembling a real war.

I found World in Conflict lacking. All the units seemed to be identical to their opposing force's equivalent and the tactics seemed to amount to amassing your units and performing "skill spams". Looking forward to playing Empire: Total War though.

I can vouch for that.

On my first battle, both my starting generals ran themselves into a wall of pikes (not enemy pikemen, actual wooden stakes), killing them and all their bodyguards. It turns out I had told them to chase a routing enemy, and apparently they must make a beeline to their target, regardless of pikey pwnage.

I think that is deliberate, not crap AI. The point is to give skirmishers a defence against cavalry, and if you blindly send them charging off and don't pay attention to the pikes, yes, they'll run into spikey death. You're meant to have to counter-maneuver.

The TKing has always been in Total War since RTW, when your own archers would shoot the hell out of your own guys if they were anywhere near in front of them.

I will agree though, both these things suck and there should be some sort of option to alert you of imminent stupid casualties.

Nah I didn't mean that, obviously if you tell them to go through it they should hit them and die. Otherwise there wouldn't really be any point to having the stakes you might as well have an invisible wall mechanic if your cavalry automatically went around any anti cavarly emplacements every time.

What I meant (and I probably should have been more clear) was that the computer controlled team's cavalry would routinely charge their cavalry into the player's stakes or pikes. This should happen occasionally maybe but the way I read it was that they do it all the time.

Nah the AI isn't too bad really. The pathfinding is bad in sieges, but put it on Very Hard and watch them outmaneuver the hell out of you.

ALSO: You don't have to fight sieges anymore, or at least very rarely. Thing is, most towns and cities have no walls. Playing as Prussia, I've taken like half of north and western Europe, and still haven't had to scale a single wall.

only played the demo briefly .. didn't see much in it .. but i love/still play RTW think swords n arrows fit the battle mechanics better.. and just watching your army advance in the turtle formation under heavy archer fire.. is awesome :p

I think it's pretty random what the AI is like during battles. Sometimes you walk straight over them and sometimes they fight pretty well. I think it's meant to simulate the armies being led by different people. I hate auto deciding matches though. It's pretty much a death sentence for half your troops.

Also, how is everyone faring at the sea battles? Because I suck at them. I've got no idea about any advanced naval tactics. 2 or 3 boats on each team I can handle. Anything else becomes a giant mess.

Here is a list of particularly awesome things:

dogs

sniping

very spicy chilli

cat claws on people (but still cool on cats)

That's how it's meant to work too. If the unit behind is on a hill they'll shoot over otherwise you have to put them next to each other or hold fire on the unit at back (which is a bit of a waste).

I have been having the same trouble. It just becomes this huge whirling melee and I loose way too many ships. Need to find a guide to some tactics.

Woo, just played my first 2 multiplayer matches, but forgot to record it.

I played as Britain, the other guy was Ottoman Empire. Basically both games (we rematched) I claimed a solid position on the right flank with artillery. He mis-committed his cavalry so they died, and let me charge through and destroy his artillery.

My line infantry and riflemen in a few solid lines, supported by elevated artillery and flanking cavalry beat him both times. Hells yes, the luck all went my way.

Anyone played cossacks? LOVED IT.. Best rts game I played.. based in 17th to 18the century. And I played multipalyer or nothing.. Was awesome. I miss those kinda battles..

Do you build bases in this game or is it one of those games where u get x amount of troops to fight x amount of troops?

Fear is another word for weakness.
In multiplayer it's x amount vs x amount. You do build bases in the single player which has a turn-based strategic empire building mode which I dig. It's kinda like a stripped down version of civ4. But at least they've put researching into this new one. It sucked in the old ones because you only really got advances depending on the timeline.
