Just did a quick search and couldn't find anything relating to it so thought I'd start a thread on it.

Post up any hints/tips/setups you have and any q's an hopefully have some answers as well (o:

Heres mine:

Sony W Series Bravia 40" KDL40W4000

Panasonic DVD Recorder/VHS combo DMR-EZ47V

Yamaha RX-V661 AV Receiver

Wharfedale Xarus XR-4000 speakers (front)

Wharfedale Xarus XR-Centre (centre)

Wharfedale Xarus XR-1000 speakers (rear)

Wharfedale SW150 (sub)

Wanted to get the Diamond 9 series speakers but JB's didn't have them. Didn't get a Blu-ray player at the time as the 'format wars' were still going on.

Oh yeah, first thing i did once i had it all setup was hook my PC up to see what BF2 looked like (o:

My bro has a pretty big setup (50inc samsung full hd with 5.1 yamaha surround sound and amp+ps3+ipod dock)

yeah was thinking about a puss3, but already have a puss2 an dont think the wife would like me spending the money on "another" game system (o:

nearly bought a 50" Sharp lcd for the same money as the Sony, but the size of the lounge room is pretty small so it would've been like "would you like some wall with your lcd?", plus sitting where the couch is you'd have to turn your head (even if slightly) to view side to side. 40" fits perfectly, you dont have to turn your head (sit about 2.5-3m away from the screen atm).

One thing i remember thinking before hand, sure the bigger size lcd would be great but i didn't want it dominating the room. My dad has a 42" plasma and the room he has his in is nearly twice the size of mine however how he has set his up, first thing your eyes are drawn to is the plasma because it just seems to dominate the room. If its a dedicated theatre room then sure it should dominate the room but if its not a theatre room so to speak, it shouldn't be what draws your attention/focus when you enter the room.

I read an article on news.com.au that explained this perfectly but cant find it now /o:

when i got my system, br players were still around the $900+ mark.

Yeah got HDMI cables (plus some dvds etc) thrown in as well (mongrels only gave me two tho so no ABC weather in 5.1 surround sound :disgust:). Thing that won me on the Xarus speakers was when in JB's the guy told me about em, said 'what do they look like', he took me over to the Sharp 50" LCD (the one i thought about buying), that had a VX-R661 and some XR-4000s hooked up, was playing Transformers, just when the grunts are getting attacked by the scorpion bot. Now you know how loud a JB store normally is with all the music etc going on, well he just turned up the yamy amp unti all you could hear in the store was Spooky unloading his 40mm bofors and 105 arty piece . . . i swear i felt like a stoner as i couldn't stop grinning like an idiot! wife came wandering over from the other side of the store and was quite impressed too, specially when i told her that those were the speakers n amp (didn't mention that i'd got Transformers thrown in as well at that stage tho) we were getting (o:

Phillips DVD (Was cheap, but has outlasted 3 other DVD players in the house)

Topfield TF5000PVRt Masterpiece SDTV PVR

Sony STR-DE497 AV Receiver

Logitech X-620 5.1 Speaker which actually do not sound bad at all.

Hmmm...

Well, my current HT setup isn't much to speak of, mostly cause I got most of the bug out of my system when I started up www.theloudspeakerkit.com and did it for a living!

Happy to help anyone out with tips etc, especially for how to integrate HTPC's Windows Home Servers and HT big screens.

Also, FWIW, I can still get Samsung and Panasonic Plasma, LCD and Projectors at wholesale if anyone wants....

Do you still have a stake in it? If so, FYI your map to premises link on this page:

DSE? Dick Smith? $399 5.1 Home Theatre? I'm going to go with no. You can pick up a decent Pana system in the mid $400's. Oh, wait, they're just speakers. nvm.

In the lounge I have:

Panasonic TH42PZ700A - 42" Plas: Used to have an older 42" Panasonic from before the time of full HD and in built set top boxes but it broke down earlier on in the year, just out of warranty. Sent it in for repairs and pulled a few favours on the warranty and got a brand new full HD set because they couldn't repair the old one. Score.

Only use a 2.1 set-up for sound because the room lacks decent space for rear speakers. Consists of a pair of 301's a Sony amp and an inherited Kenwood amp that rocks my socks but is heavy as all buggery.

Kindros,

Not sure what product you mean, the link you gave me is cycling through a heap of different specials.

Delivery to WA only folks, sorry. I don't have a hunting licence for the east cost, I can do it but have to pay double the freight and this makes it a pointless exercise.

If you are buying a large format TV, I would strongly suggest the following:

1) Make it an LCD unless you are never going to use a PC with it, the latest LCD's really are better than Plasma for everything except dark movies

2) Get full HD (1920 x 1080) - don't even think about getting a 1024 screen now

3) If you think a 42" screen is going to be too big then you really need to get a 50" screen. No matter how "big" you think that screen is when you buy it, you'll always regret not going bigger later on!

http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/armouredservice.bmp
So wholesale can't be that much better than a really good retail price then if delivery would put it over the top?
correct daveee - my best price is usually about 5-10% under a good retail price, there aint much margin in that stuff.
http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/armouredservice.bmp
delivery costs a fortune and those screens aren't small! so its not surprising they pump up the price to much to post em.
Fear is another word for weakness.
Is this only for folks in WA?

If you are in the market daveee, go to JB HiFi, theyve got some bargains on at the moment.

Our TV decided to do some sort of lord of the rings flaming eyeball impression last week - the screen has an 'eyeball' imprint on it, all the colours are out of wack depending on where you look at the eyeball. People are generally green (looks like the news is being read by aliens) and cartoons look so trippy its not even funny. Weve been shopping around a bit, and JB has the best bargains at the moment.

LCD's and PLASMAS will drop in price next yr quite considerably, due to new screen technology called LASER SCREEN TV

so if you can wait a lil longer wait for mid next yr and you probably see prices drop a fair bit!

Hey guys, quick q for youse who are in the know. Two things with my setup (first post for details/specs).

Thing 1: every now and then the sub makes a kind of 'ding' (but bass sounding) noise, only ever seems to happen when the av is putting out in 5.1. Now on the back of my av receiver (VX-R661) there is only one output for the sub, but the back of the sub has a pannel like whats shown on page 11 here it shows two inputs (red n white). Had a spare RCA cable lying round so used that to connect the sub. any ideas what might be causeing the 'ding' sound?

Thing 2: when the av is puting out '2ch/stereo' sound, it shows on the front panel as using the two front speakers. however sound appears to only come from the centre speaker and not always but often enough to be rather annoying the sound level of voice will drop from the normal level to what you'd prolly consider a whisper compared to the other sound coming (background noise, music, etc). any ideas?

Cabling on all speakers cept the sub is using this figure 8 'low loss' cable

There comes a time in every musician's life when they must decide what instrument they should master. Few. If any are ever worthy enough to master. The cowbell.

With the sub, you should only need to plug it into one of the red/white connectors. Does your sub also have speaker output cables? I think it's only if you are using the sub to power other speakers that you need both cables connected at the input. Mine is like this I am pretty sure.

As for only coming out of the centre channel, that is a bit weird. Have you got all the speakers connected properly?

Sounds pretty much like the speakers are all getting the the wrong signals, if background noise is really loud along with music but speech isn't.

I forget what all the yammy options are called as I haven't had to set mine up in so long.
