My much abused PC appears to have taken a fatal wound in battle somewhere. Its just not booting up. Its not getting to the initialisation screen at all. It has power, it turns on, but their isnt the usual little motherboard beep - in fact no beeping at all, just a couple of odd clicks. Then thats about it. All the fans and stuff buzz around but no signal at all to the screen.

So its obviously hard ware gone kaput. I have pulled out the ram and video card and reset them. Thats about as much as i know what to do. Also tried different monitor. I hope its not a failed hard drive.

It was a little dusty in my box so i had a clean up.

But yeah any clues to anything i can do to fix it, before i take it to the shop?

Free beer to anyone who knows whats going on...

If its not even POSTing, then i'd say it could be a Mobo issue. Have you tried resetting the BIOS? May (not) help but worth a shot. IF you cant find the jumper/switch to do it, remove the CMOS battery and let it sit for a looooong time (prolly half hour to an hour) so all charge leaves the capacitors. Put it back in an try again.

No BIOS beeps. Just a couple of small little clicks sounds, but i really cant tell where they originate.

google just told me to pull out the BIOS battery so im doing that (once i find it) -

i kinda like ripping apart a PC -its a lot like a car engine...except smaller - and more fragile..

OK i will leave it for a bit.

my M/B is a gigabyte GA-M55 something

sound like dodgy mobo

you could also remove any non-critical hw (additional ram, gpx, sound cards) etc. to try and see whether it's the power supply failing.

Does the MB have any LED's which are used to diagnose the problem?

dunno - but im finding out...googling away and reading its manual...

cool - general consensus seems to be mobo, so thats where im concentrating. But first - this man needs some beer!

no led's

reset the bios by putting a screwdriver on the pins (to connect them) indicated on page 29 of the manual (just above the battery. or just take the battery out

ive done enough for 1 day...thatnx anyways guys - ill take this POS machine to the shop later today/morrow - let some poor techie deal with it...

just 1 more question...if its the hard drive that has died would it still get to the first screen on start-up? im convinced im hearing the hard drive make these clicking sounds....i dont wanna lose my hard drive it has so much great porn on it...

lol... it's just a matter of connecting those two pins together to complete a circuit.

to get the battery out it's simple as sliding something (small screwdriver or knife) between the battery and holder and flicking up

run it bare and see if you still get the clicks. I would put money on though if you are hearing clicks that it could be your HDD fuxoring things up for you. We have had the weather for it, so its a possibility.

You're all wrong, and I am always right, and the sooner you accept it, the happier you will be. That is all!

I always try another PSU before messing with the other bits.

And your PC will still start ,make noises ....BUT nothing happens if the psu is dodgey

Its usually the first thing to dita.

handy to have spare parts around (psu 's),even if it means cannibalising the Minions(my old) PC..:)

As mentioned, first (and easiest) course of action is a BIOS reset [the battery/jumper method].

Oh by the way, doesn't he have to unplug it from the wall before pulling out the battery or else it won't do anything :)?

Next step is pulling out your VGA and RAM. You then try to boot, see if it comes up with some beeps (error codes). Then put them back in and try to boot, you might have some luck.

Cheers for your help.

Im gunna keep messing about with suggestions before i take it to the shop. I've never really ripped apart a PC before, so i wanna give it a crack. Might even go buy some parts to shove in and mess around with.

The problem is definately PSU or mobo, so I shouldnt be too screwed. I have a housemates lappy to surf the net on. My girlfriend is stoked with the increased cuddling time.

Earlier this year is stripped and rebuilt a mower engine and had a bit of (frustrating) fun with that - so i might do the same with the PC.

When i get stumped i will get back ta yas!
