Hey, I 've been having a slow time with my vista PC of late. PR has been running like a dog and I got Farcry 2 yesterday and the FPS is about 15. I'm thinking my (AT THE TIME) expensive 8800 GTS with a pathetic 320mb of ram is not up to the job any more. CPU=AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800 with Memory=3069 MB.

 

IF you had $300-400 what graphics card would you get...??

 

Im so pissed off with my rig...IM BUYING TODAY???

Nvidia GTX 260 896MB Starting from $350

 

Nvidia GTX 280 1024MB Starting from $560

 

Their the newest Nvidia and ATI cards.

9600GT was the go for value about 1-2 months ago.. I'm a bit out of it now.

I got an HD 4870 100 fps drops to 70 odd occasionally

HD4870 1gb if you can find one (should be around the $400 mark).

FarCry2 seems from online benchmarking to really use the memory on higher res so the 1gb version is preferamble to the slightly cheaper 512mb one.

+1, the amount of research I've done on this in the last week. The 4870 comes out on top for cost - just availability kicks you in the teeth. On paper the 280's don't appear to be that much greater than the 260's. The 4870 appears to be on par with the 260 - dont hold me to that though, I'm certainly no tech

you shouldnt have probs with 8800gts on pr, I have one and i use to run (when i played pr) all on max and would pull 60+ fps.

 

It also runs arma at 30+.

If it were me I would be looking at the rest of the system before upgrading from that card. Bottleneck would be in the CPU in my opion

By the way my brother is playing FC2 on my old 8800GTS 320MB and he's playing all with everything on high + a few on very high, pulling 32+FPS consistently. I don't think it's the card holding you back unless you've chucked every setting on very high, where the lack of video memory [VRAM] is holding you back.

One to throw in there re NVidia vs ATI. Just found when I ungraded my drivers recently that NVidia don't seem to support the Full screen video output to another device. I use this a lot to watch AVI's from PC on main television, so this was a big letdown. Seen posts that they reckon was due to Vista issues with it, so got dropped? ATI has some theatre mode which does the same thing an works..

Always been an NVidia man myself, but thinking maybe ATI next time? NVidia drivers do seem to get a lot of grumbles

PR was running real bad and now its mint, all settings maxed. Far cry 2 runs sweet now. God if you put PR into the Far Cry 2 game engine....WOW

Poor kiwi. Buying a graphics card and playing farcry and PR instead of coming out and getting drunk with me, Aussie and Aresnik.

 

No excuses next time mate.....
