Posted October 21, 200816 yr hey guys, well after another lovely day at work :disgust:, i came home jumped on ArmA for bout 20 mins, closed it and tried to load PR, when poof 'No Signal'. now i'm stuck trying to use safe mode without kicking the case into the wall. i have been having issues with this comp since it came out of warranty and to be quite abrupt i have had enough of the $%#. Now for all you techs out there... it's been a long while since i've looked through the computer market and am looking for assistance in building my new pc. somewhere in the range of $2,000-$3,000, would be good. i'm going to reuse the case, monitor and peripherals, so its pretty much just the core. what i'm looking for is something i can play games on, pr and arma of course but when i get my house built i want to be able to hook a projector to the comp and use a DTV card (or whatever they are) for watching the teev or moies. is it possible to have both the projector and game running simultaneous or is that too much? cheers in advance for any help Enuf. Evil Shenanigans!
October 21, 200816 yr I'd go this: Vid - ATI 4870 (X2 if you can afford it (o; ) Mem - 4Gb (yes Windoz wont recognize it but you'll still get between 3-3.5Gb detected) Proc - Depends on your camp spose, i'd go a Phenom 9850 BBE myself Mobo - Depends on your camp as well too but you generally cant go past Asus Did you require the PSU as well? Get a 800W+ one to allow for expansion if you do. Cant answer your last q tho soz. There comes a time in every musician's life when they must decide what instrument they should master. Few. If any are ever worthy enough to master. The cowbell.

Hmm not sure... Depends if the video is cpu dependent or not. If so, you can just set game affinity to cpu0 and video to cpu1, but if it requires gpu cycles (which I'm thinking it does) would that cause hiccups? http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. October 21, 200816 yr whatever you chose, for the system/box only isnt gonna cost you 3k! Everything is cheaper then it use to be. I looked at the DTV stuff to when i did my new pc, but i decieded its to much mucking around and id stick to gaming with it and if I really want to record tv Ill buy one of those state of the art hhd recorders for $300-400. But I download alot of tv shows onto my pc with torrents instead. Fear is another word for weakness.

October 22, 200816 yr you never ever ever ever ever need to spend more than 1000 dollars on a pc 6 months ago i got cpu q6600 (quad core) 9600 gt (not the best but plays anything out there) 2gb ram (still refusing to go onto vista) 250gb seagate HD 860wt psu p5n sli mobo and that only cost me $640!!! go to http://www.msy.com.au/ they will give you parts list, their customer service sucks balls but there prices are about 30% of retail. for $70 they will put the PC together for you.

Total: $3227 - $235 - $187 $2805 any suggestions on this are much appreciated. thanks Enuf That's quite outdated. I'll break it down for you: CPU: Intel E8400 S775 $239 That's fine Motherboard: EVGA 132-CK-NF79-A1 790i $493 Absolute waste of money. DS3/P/R or ASUS P45 boards for ~$200 will more than suffice. RAM: 2 x 2GB Kit Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800 (C4) $189 That's fine but you can get 2x2GB Kingston/Generic DDR2-800mhz for less than $100. No difference unless you plan on doing some major OCs. HDD: 2 x Western Digital Raptor 150GB SATA 16MB $458 - (i'm guessing these are in raid and the other is a backup?) 1 x Western Digital 640GB SATAII 16MB $132 Raptor raid... mmm noisetastic. Also the velociraptor series is now out. Personally I prefer more storage to 5 seconds quicker load time for BF2 or whatever. It's personal preference though. For the $590 they're suggesting on getting 940GB, you could have 6x500GB + 1x320GB = 3.3TB GPU: 2 x 512MB XFX 8800GTX OC XXX Edition $930 - (or 2 x 9800 GTXi?) Outdated graphics cards. GTX260/280 or HD4780 would cost you about $400-600 and you wouldn't be throwing money away. If you had to have SLI, perhaps 2x9800GTs would be better (<$500 for the lot) Case: Thermaltake Armor+ $235 - (got 1) PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower 750W – $187 - (go big now or stick with this? pretty sure its what i got now.) Should be fine... don't throw money away, do the research and find out what you want (modular? Low noise? High A on 12V Rails?) Optical Drive: ASUS 20x BLT-2014 Lightscribe SATA $35 Sound Card: Auzentech Prelude X-FI 7.1 $255 Are you an audiophile? Do you have the sound system to justify spending $255 on a sound card when for the majority of applications [in my very non-audio-caring opinion] integrated or a $100 card will sound very similar? CPU HSF: Noctua NH-U12P Performance CPU Cooler $79 - (or is water-cooling worth it?) Water cooling is more of a hobby IMO, with the efficiency in the modern air cooling (NH-U12, TR UE120 etc) the jump in price is in no way worth it. If you need better than air, go straight to peltier or the likes, but don't waste time and money on water cooling Instead of spending about $3k now, I'd rather spend $1.5-2k and upgrade the parts that need it later... much better value for money. The only issue with that is some people 'can't be bothered' and as such would rather just do it all at once. In that case, you pay the "I want it now" premium Edited October 22, 200816 yr by Husker http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. October 22, 200816 yr My new pc: MOBO - EP45 Extreme $325 RAM - DDR2 Corsair 4GB 8500 C5DF $220 CPU - Intel Core-Duo E8500 $242 GPU - ASUS 9800GTX+ $265 PSU - Corsair HX620 $157 CASE - Antec P182 $200 DVD WRITER $34 TOTAL = $1443 (already had HDD, LCD's, mouse, keyboard, XP home, etc.) Very happy with it, PR runs perfect with everything on high 100fps dropping occasionally to 80fps on intense maps like Ramiel/Korangal Valley. (unnoticeable obviously) I agree with Psyrus regarding the mobo, Even my mobo is overkill but it does allow for upgrades later on. Why not get the Intel E8500 instead of the E8400 for an extra $3 ? Is it really worth getting 2 GPU's for the extra 30% tops performance you'll get? I wasn't prepared to pay an extra $265 for 30% tops. But that's up to you. October 22, 200816 yr Author Alrite i think I'm learning here. I'm still not sure on the whole video/movies on projector and gaming at the same time. I've found some people trying it but nothing with overly great success, hence the sound card - for the movie output (although probably not $255 dollars worth). With graphics cards, if they are a dual core processor, is there any way to set an affinity with them? With sli cards is there any way to use one cards processor for one monitor and the other cards (through the sli bridge) for the other? Would it be worth getting a mobo for future expansion to DDR3 ram? Sorry to ask so many questions, but its already served me so well Thanks again Enuf Evil Shenanigans!
October 22, 200816 yr graphics cards push to one or 2 outputs (ie you can have 1 or 2 screens running which can be the same as each other or different applications) no need to set affinity AFAIK you can not run 2 monitors under SLI (you certainly cant in crossfire - ATI's equivalent) - the 2 cards just make the one graphical process work better (now much is open to debate) DDR3 is very expensive but getting better. You are better off sticking to DDR2 as by the time DDR3 is worth while you will need a new CPU and motherboard anyway. http://www.madhouseau.com/misc/sigs/darthsig.jpg
October 22, 200816 yr a 486 ? ... kind sir, you need not go past our fine range of Amiga 64's... I think you mean Commodore 64's, or perhaps even Vic 20's.. sigh those were the days, tinkering with your tape drive to get the heads aligned properly so you could load the latest game. October 23, 200816 yr Author Thanks for the help thus far and cheers Darth for pointing that out about SLI, i didnt know that and finding out the hard way may have caused something to be thrown. Alrite here's what I've come up with so far: Intel Core2 Duo E8600 3.33Ghz $495 GIGABYTE GA-EP45-DQ6 LGA775 IP45 BOARD $423.50 Gigabyte GeForce GTX280 1GB DDR3 PCI-E x16 $737 Corsair Twin2X 2048MB 240-pin DDR2 800Mhz PC-6400 (2x 1024mb sticks), 4-4-4-12 EPP $103.40 (2 of) Theramltake toughpower 850W PSU (already have) 2x 500Gb Western Digital Caviar 7200rpm SATA-II hard disks, 16mb cache $242 (thats two for that price) Pioneer BDC-S02BK black SATA DVD-RW drive and Blue-Ray Player $199.10 Logitech G15 $118.80 Logitech G5 (have one and love it) Monitors, have them total : $2421 let me know what you think and any suggestions on where to drop this price are appreciated Enuf Evil Shenanigans!
October 23, 200816 yr Raptor raid... mmm noisetastic. C: = 4x74gbRaptors Raid 0 Isnt very loud at all. Seriously thou I just speced a friends uber gaming rig for him last weekend. cpu e8500 (just happended to be same price as e8400) $200 gigabyte mb crossfire enabled (for later if he needs it) ati hd4870 (512mb version) x1 antec 900 case (bit 7331 for my tastes ) 4gb (2 x 2gb sticks) 640 gb samsung hd x1 all up he spent around $1350 with local dealers , online is cheaper but he prefers a local so he can bang on a real door when things break. I'd say he got 4/5 of a $3000 machine. Each bit isnt the best or most he could afford but there around the best price point . so he is happy. For your comp I would suggest dropping the cpu to a e8400 3ghz isnt a heck of a lot slower than 3.3 ghz and its almost half the price. Also get 4gb......................................................just do. 280s are amazing but a ati hd4870 1gb card is $400 and is 9/10 the card, heck get 2 if you want insane fps (ati cards can in some case do 2 outputs from the primary card in crossfire, the functionality is still in beta) Get a cheaper mb......($423 maybe if it could make me a damn good expresso first thing in the morning after showing me a thing or two the night before.) I strongly suspect you dont need all the features on that board ? a $150-250 mb will still have all the features youd need The main point is your happy with what you get . Just dont spend more than you can apprieciate for the next 3 years its a good computer. :hi: Edited October 23, 200816 yr by Shifty.au
October 23, 200816 yr visit the MSY website get EVERYTHING from there, at least half price. i agree with most of whats been said, if you got the money to spend go for it, but 400 for mobo is funking ridiculous. mine was $79 and is really really good.
October 23, 200816 yr My suggestion would be ATI.. they are better than nVidia at the moment and far cheaper. Go for a cheap motherboard, don't go for SLI boards waste of money, you are best off getting a dual core video card. At the moment the P45 chipset is the ones to get. If you are spending more than $1800 for TOP OF THE RANGE you are wasting your money. http://www.clan-tea.com/sigs/flames/Poncho-Temp.png Orders starting with SOMEBODY usually wind up being completed by NOBODY.
October 23, 200816 yr +1 Poncho. Here, I believe fallenplate's suggestion is what you should be looking at.. I'd go a bit further with the cost cuts. CPU: Intel Core2 Duo E8400 3.0Ghz ~$250 - Bump the FSB by I think it's like 40mhz and you're at E8600 speeds with no need for a new cooler. CPU Cooler (Optional but recommended): Ultra 120 Extreme - $65 [needs a fan] or Noctua UH12 - $85 [but comes with good fan; my choice] Motherboard: Gigabyte P45 Range ~$150 - $250 - Don't pay for features you won't use. If you can't tell me why the $400 one is more useful to you than the $150 one but buy the $400 one, I need to slap you Graphics: HD4870 1GB edition - $390 RAM: 4GB 800mhz DDR2 RAM - ~$100 [Or 1066mhz if you wanna splurge if you're overclocking] HDD: 2x 500Gb Western Digital Caviar 7200rpm SATA-II hard disks, 16mb cache $242 (thats two for that price) Optical: Pioneer BDC-S02BK black SATA DVD-RW drive and Blue-Ray Player $199.10 Keyboard: Logitech G15 $118.80? New Case (Optional):Minimalist but reasonable cooling - CM Elite 333/334 - $60 Good cooling; Cheap - CM690 - $120 Blingy2daMax0rz; Huge fans - HAF 932 - $210 Great cooling; Kinda blingy [my fave] - Twelve Hundred - $250 Epeen brag rights - TJ07/09 - >$380Total: $1499 + case spend + Cooling spend Add $690 for a 2408WFP and you're golden Total: $2190 + case spend + Cooling spend Edit: :O Orr...... $799 for 27 inch wheeeee Edited October 23, 200816 yr by Husker http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. October 23, 200816 yr this thread is great im looking at getting a new desktop computer as I use a laptop atm, and have a maximum of $2000, but wont be till sometime next year. I convinced the wife saying that Sims 3 will work on it lol. So when time comes around for it will be posting it up. Im really out of touch with computer hardware these days and been years since I last built a computer.
October 24, 200816 yr Author Psy, see I'm learning the Optical, RAM and HDD's are mine after i posted i also looked at the 4870 and thought that would be the better option, for a hell of a lot cheaper it's actually pretty close considering. The case, I have a Thermaltake Armor thats only about 12 months old. Monitors, Acer 22" and Sony projector when i get it. The only reason I'm looking at an expensive mobo is I bought a $200 Asus one last time and from about 4 months in it has given me nothing but trouble. Heres a list of issues with it: USB 2 doesnt work on it, reverts to 1.1 BIOS cannot be updated because it's not an Asus board, wtf seriously. Drivers cannot be updated because it's not an Asus board, (IT IS AN ASUS BOARD DAMMIT!) USB drops out every so often, even though I use an external hub No DVD drive detected 2 of the 3 3.5" sound jacks don't work 1 network port failed Optical sound failed Makes me a little withdrawn from only buying a cheap board, but if you say so... With the processors, you say only go for the E8400 cause it's only 0.3GHz slower, but thats only 0.4GHz faster than the base model for double the price. Where does it end? -That does look good though. Has anyone had anything to do with 'ULTRAMON' it apparently allows dual monitors with full screen apps, though when you click outside the full screen it is usually minimized or windowed so i dont know how it can. Thanking you Enuf Evil Shenanigans!

October 24, 200816 yr It seems like a bit more than $3 Ablack, but really it comes down to personal preference http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=e8400+-gs+-con vs http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=e8500+-con You asked why E8400 enuf?
