I got no idea what to call them and I got no idea if they really exisit or if they are allowed to exisit ... that's why i thought I would ask you boys :)

Watched Blackhawk Down again over the weekend (bloody mint movie) and noticed the Eric Bana character at the start of the movie, when he was gathering intel was kinda like an 'undercover' or 'covert' Delta dude.

Do these guys do this in real life, ie go into hostile area without a uniform and gather intel or is that the realm of the spooks from CIA etc?

If so, what would they be called and can anyone send me pics or more info?

cheers,

Wal

No-one here would really be in the know, just pulling crap out their arse. Anyone who does it at the risk of sounding like a numpty, so I'm not going to even attempt.

well depends where i guess, there in mog wasnt that uncommon to find westerns as at that time (only guessing here) there were still journo's there and wat not (or did they get pulled out after that pakistan (sp) group got sluaghtered?) but my point is it would prolly depend on where and the danger level and all that jaz. but like ice said i really got no clue lol, just taking it from my point of view, but hey, the gota get ground intel somehow.

Dunno, read a few books about 'secret' spec-ops units, one book called Killer Elite talks about a unit called "The Activity", aparently a military support unit developed to support a 2nd attempt at rescueing hostages in Iran in the 80's (Delta Force movie opening scene?) and another one on some ultra-secret assassin squad for the brits that had developed some form of martial-arts they called "the machine", the 2nd book sounds a lot more like bs to me than the first book.
There comes a time in every musician's life when they must decide what instrument they should master. Few. If any are ever worthy enough to master. The cowbell.
How else do they get Intel??

Dumb question.. lol

Fear is another word for weakness.
How else do they get Intel??

James Bond, say no more :p

Of course there are Covert Ops same as spy's and disinformants, every country is keen to gather intel on other countries, their called diplomats :p

No one knows for sure where or what they do but they must exist, ground intel is the best intel pending the intel is not from a disinformant

delta and other units do this under certain circumstances . otherwise that is the cia job .

As per what you see and hear on T.V, media the CIA do Covert ops with infiltration & ground intel.

Delta type teams are Covert Ops recovery type in and out mission, smash and grab styles :)

Sooooo ...... if you were to have a kit in PR based on this, what would it be called? :)

well it be impossible to be an undercover agent for the opposing team in PR, but on the point of gather intel, anyone of them can, as long as your smart enough to not get caught and know where to look your considered to be collecting intel, so long as you pass it on to others.

i smell a new ribbion...intel collector :D

Waly if you thought it was a good movie read the book. The movie doesn't do the book justice.

Ice put a good disclaimer on this thread, so this comes under that banner.

Delta would be required to collect intel like the Bana character in certain situations. Thats why they are allowed to have non-regulation haircuts etc - occasionally, if they have to work in a civvy-populated area, it helps to not look like a fricken jarhead hehe.

SAS and similar forces (Delta was made after the image of Brit SAS after Col Charles Beckwith observed the SAS selection course, I think in the 1950's)

engage in covert intelligence gathering. You would be very lucky to find any genuine pics.

Undercover/covert operations is a very broad/amorphous range of activity. As broad as imagination or necessity requires.

Nothing too secretive about them...Only what they do. Look at it from a realist POV though. They are employed by the government, and trained in covert tactics, as well as counter ops. Of course they are going to be used, whether it is directly under the Military command, or Government Branch.

This is no BS. I do know one ex-SAS and have my suspicions about on of his friends he hangs around with. And I do remember quite often he would be coming back from other countries undeclared. IE via military base but just happening to be walking with the crowd from the 4.15 from Brissy.

You're all wrong, and I am always right, and the sooner you accept it, the happier you will be. That is all!

To answer a few questions.

That type of intel is called HUMINT = Human (only used when the next one doesn't work)

other type SIGINT = Signals Intel the most widly used siginals intel

I could go into alot more detail but would rather not if you want to chat about it let me know

Of course they exist. Where there is a need, governments will find a way.

JL would probably have a good idea if anyone here does, then again he probably wouldn't be allowed to tell us ;)

EDIT: Lol, need to update the thread before I post JL beat me to it. :p
