Gpu - MSI R4870 T2D512

Ram - Kingston 1X 2G 1333

Yeah driving me nuts the sound issue sorta fixed itself when I'd given up all hope and was about to reformat it seemed to just appear to resolve itself.

I've played 2 times and the system froze after the new map load

Did you have weird sound looping, static etc?

You have to go through the motions with your new computer. Testing for stability, memory problems etc. You could of got a dud stick of memory for all you know.

Google Orthos, set it to blend and run it for at least 5 hours, overnight usually.

Do I need to set the Affinity to single core every time I run PR?

I've got basically the exact same specs. Go to the gigabyte website and download the latest bios for your motherboard if you haven't done so already. The factory bios has major problems with the 48xx series gfx cards. Should also be able to go way higher than 1024x768 if your monitor can go higher ;). And no, don't need to set the affinity to 1 core. Hope that helps.

Whatever you feel more comfortable with. F2 should fix your problems though.

Not a nice spot to be in.. Hate HW issues. Have you tried with lower settings just to test things out? I know I set kids PC to switch off hyperthreading but that should not be applicable to newer multi core CPU I think.

I remember soeone talkig about playing in windowed mode to see if it shows up any messages, etc - perhaps an option - commandline I think.

I also had lots of problems getting Realtek HD going properly, esp the microphone. FOund I had to run a program to calibrate the mic - C:\Program Files\Realtek\InstallShield\MicCal.exe

Also, I got the OpenAL software driver to get better EAX sounds from

http://connect.creativelabs.com/developer/Wiki/OpenAL%20Installer%20for%20Windows.aspx

see below for some discussion

http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=22391 which also points to BF2 threads.

Am I invisible? First thing you have to check is stability. You need to remove each possible cause, one by one. Worry about software LAST.

Orthos, memtest86+. You could update all the drivers in the world and still crash if your memory is shot.

You don't even know if your HSF is on correctly, have you even tested heat?

FIRST: http://sp2004.fre3.com/beta/beta2.htm - Run this for 5 hours.

While it's running, - run this: http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ to check temperatures.

If Orthos stops, it could be heat or memory. You will have to create a boot disk or download one with memtest86+ if it's memory.

This OpenAL fixer is also pretty handy - http://nomoregoatsoup.wordpress.com/2008/07/01/rejzors-openal-generic-fixer/

Yeah I will run the tests SOP as soon as possible, I'm leaning towards ram atm but until I test I wont know... I'm not sure if my 4870's fan is working seems to sit at 58c unless the software's stuffed, could also be my CPU fail safe in the bios manager as the warning temp is set to 40c

I think 40'C is a bit low - mine used to sit around 60'C I'm sure.

EDIT: Intel E8500 max temp is 72.4'C. I couldn't find definitive warning and shutdown temperatures, but I'd suggest 55'C warning and 65'C shutdown.

I use memtest86+ all the time, its a good place to start.

and most of the time RAM plays up for me, it is fixed by pulling it out and putting it back in again

Try 65-70 as warning temp, will be safe. most mb will throttle the cpu slower if you hit the setpoint. thats probably what happening when you freeze in game.

4870 run hot and are made to stand this. 60-80c isnt uncommon and is fine for them.

good luck

Yeah thanks will adjust the temps and run the stability tests and see how I go.

My 4870 running at 30% fan speed on idle is 55*C. When it runs at stock fan speeds without any mods it idles at 78*C, so your fan is fine. On load it goes up to around 70*C. Just a hot card, make sure you have lots of ventilation out the back as well. Warning temp for the cpu I have on 70*C I think, after stressing it for a while it only goes up to around 55*C anyway, so 60-65 should be alright, though I have an e8400, not an e8500. But yeah, run the tests, see if any errors pop up. If nothing pops up then something is wrong...

Ok so up the Bios alarms to 65c and ran Orthos all tested passed 72c max temp, seems ok played a few rounds last night no freezing so I assume it was the bios cut out temps?

Yep seems that was the issue... Uh but did you say that your CPU went up to 72 degrees when Orthos testing?

Yeah thats what one program said the other said about 65c, having said that no more freezes but just got CTD with nor real reason, no kit change or anything just sitting in jeep 50cal

70 is too hot for CPU. GPU is fine.

Stock cooler? Did you put it together yourself? It may not be seated correctly.

I run an aftermarket cooler and it doesn't get hotter than 50 or so (not at home atm, not sure of exact temps). Plus mine is overclocked, with more voltage running to cpu.

I'd sort that out if I was you, high temps will certainly reduce the life of your components.
