A Bad Day at the Office is when the electricians that are installing some new power points cut a live cable (which they swore was turned off "we tested it!") which throws a circuit breaker, which causes our rack of servers to run from the UPS.... Now normally this isn't a problem because we have a huge gen set to run the IT area (well the whole building actually) and it gets tested monthly (by turning off the power). But these guys have turned off the switch that starts the gen set when it detects a power failure.

So the servers are running from UPS's and they are screaming and beeping away and the electricians go "Oops". They they go and flip the breaker on and off which caused an input surge to the UPS which caused then to go off... Big OOPs. Everything is down.

Anyway long story short, it took 3/4 of a day to get all the servers up and running but we still had some weird problems. PC's and servers dropping in and out even though they were connected. Eventually tracked the problem down to an old 10MB hub in some guys office that took a hit from that input surge, and was spewing out faulty traffic and flooding the network. Soon as it was unplugged everything went back to normal.

Thats a "Bad Day at the Office", and even though its not our fault ... its OUR fault in the mind of our users and managers. God I hate that...

So how do you become an expert suicide bomber?
