Posted August 23, 200816 yr I want to make a website where i can play videos of my footy team. As luck would have it I just got given 1gb of server space and a domain name. I have friends in high places. The only thing is its a US server. I've called it chargersvideos.com (original I know) Anyway, I've never made a website before. I just need something simple with a video player and maybe some pics. I was also thinking of throwing in a little forum, but thats not important straight away. I just want to get the video up and running first. So what do I do now? Any suggestions. I though I would start a thread first, get some advice, before I made any stupid mistakes. Who here has built a website? Currently I use Youtube to host the footy games. Its alright, but i want higher quality. Heres my Youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/Dingobabyboy Edited August 23, 200816 yr by Chance1
August 23, 200816 yr I have been involved in web, graphics, 3D, and so on for years. Get yourself a nice Flash system for the video... I suggest... do some googling... - you will find templates and free things out there for your needs - don't spend money when you can get it free (coming from a Scot. who should know )... If you want to do a damn good job you will personally need to understand scripting, I suggest, try: www.w3schools.com I've got too much on my plate to help... maybe someone else here can advise you better... August 23, 200816 yr Hey charger, I think this thread will be of great interest to you: http://www.bigdgaming.net/showthread.php?t=5262 http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. Could also try things like dreamweaver, or some other adobe flash making stuff. Fear is another word for weakness.
August 23, 200816 yr Author Yeah ive just been reading that. (S.O.P's thread) and watched those videos. It is very close to what I want. Very good quality. I have cable internet, and the second video didnt play all the way through, so i'm thinking i could be pushing things to far in that high quality. I suppose I would have to edit down the videos when I make them. I wonder if, my server being hosted in the states, that that my slow things down even more. Besides, all you need to do is press pause i suppose, and wait for the loading to catch up. Thanks guys, this is helping me already. I think I might lay off the beers, I have to pay attention, cause i'm learning a lot! Edited August 23, 200816 yr by Chance1

August 23, 200816 yr Author your not helping smokejumper, your distracting me from my mission.. My next mission is bandwidth. I have 1gb of data space, but am not limited in how many times my videos may be viewed? It doesnt really say clearly on my webhosting page. Ancientman, i know you cant wait to fill me in...! August 23, 200816 yr I couldn't let that whopper slide bro. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. August 23, 200816 yr How simple does it need to be? Like the page of mine (and Ancientman's) you have looked at, it's just basic html. Does the web page need to be pretty or is it just text with pictures and links to video? You will have a bandwidth cap, for sure, you need to find out what that is and keep all content on your site as small as possible. Your host should have a control panel with hopefully a one step to install phpbb or something like that. August 23, 200816 yr data space is how much you can store, bandwidth is the amount of traffic or data that can be viewed/ downloaded from your page. Fear is another word for weakness.
August 23, 200816 yr Joomla demo - http://demo.joomla.org/ You could also force a Wordpress blog, with a decent skin, to be a reasonably effective CMS and video site. All you need to do is use HTML to embed video players (like the one I described) or pictures into your posts. http://imgur.com/e5y6e.gif You've already ruined these forums for me, I have no desire to read your rhetoric or the pathetic arguments you get yourself in to, or the personal vendetta you have against me, so please, do not talk to me. August 23, 200816 yr Author Yeah the project started simple, but u know how it is, now i wanna make the best most awesome website eva!
August 24, 200816 yr Author Everythings gone to poo...i've gotten Dreamweaver and am using that. But after 1 days tinkering i fail......
August 24, 200816 yr lol use a template for dreamweaver, search for em online Fear is another word for weakness.
August 24, 200816 yr Author yeah i am making progress! I just gotta give myself more then 1 day to get my head around a fairly complex piece of software. I've made a frontpage, remembered to save it as a index.html. And am photoshopping up some banners and stuff. I'll probably just leave it simple for now without going to mad.....
August 25, 200816 yr Yep, keep it simple, you can go back and get fancy as you get the hang of it. HTML only takes a few hours at most to learn the basics, handy to have, if for nothing else than the simple understanding I found it gave me with regard to web site building. Plenty of tutorials out there, or cheap books around. Former Head Admin Check out the current admin list HERE
August 25, 200816 yr Author Yeah mate, i didnt go to work today - instead i worked on my site...which is now up and running!!! long ways to go though, im messing around with different video players. I use firefox and am having trouble with realplayer. Flash is causing me trouble too. Quicktime is working but not very good quality. But I also have to try and balance bandwidth. Ive only got 20gb/month to use, so i cant go sick on the quality. So ill more than likely only have 1-2 games playing off my site, then ill just embed all my other youtube vids. But dreamweaver is the bomb! But i had to look at quite a few tutorials to get my head around it. but it skips the whole html code writing, which is great for me..
August 25, 200816 yr Same for me, I liked just adding in pics and headers etc just like in a word document instead of using coding.. Much easier and faster. Fear is another word for weakness.
August 25, 200816 yr Author http://www.chargersvideos.com dont laugh..its my first one...and its a work in progress.... im struggling with embeding that JW FLV payer as well....but ill work it out.. Edited August 25, 200816 yr by Chance1
August 25, 200816 yr Doing it with Dreamweaver seems to be re-inventing the wheel. Use Joomla, Drupal, even Wordpress, all the hard work is done for you. http://imgur.com/e5y6e.gif You've already ruined these forums for me, I have no desire to read your rhetoric or the pathetic arguments you get yourself in to, or the personal vendetta you have against me, so please, do not talk to me.
