Posted August 16, 200816 yr This is a book about Australian Airmen during the second world war. I have to say that this is up there with being the best $25 I have ever spent in my life. Every single chapter is one mans story that the author has done an interview for. The stuff in this book is so unbelievable that if you saw it in a movie you would call bs in an instant. Like one example where a pilot of a Lancaster was just telling his crew to bail as he unstrapped. The Lanc exploded cracking open the cockpit and sending him into the night sky. He thought he was dead until he noticed part of the engine falling through the sky near him so he pulled his ripcord and was the only survivor. For those of us in Victoria there is a lot of mention of Point Cook and Laverton. I'm off to buy a crowbar in the next week or so to do a little exploring before they tear down the rest of the old airfield. The control tower is still there but I know the land is being sold and will be built up and the place will be relegated to history so I want to go have a lookiloo. Who wants to go for a little recce? Flak by Michael Veitch. http://shop.abc.net.au/browse/product.asp?productid=535397 I was listening to gold radio when they interviewed him and went straight to the book shop on my lunch break to buy it. I can't put it down. As you can see in my sig I'm a bit of a history air war junkie. August 16, 200816 yr get a book called "nanette" the best ww2 air fighting book by far, i reckon... http://www.pacificwrecks.com/reviews/nanette.html "She is beautiful and graceful at her best, while quirky and difficult to handle when not lovingly handled." The metaphor of women and machine drives the author's descriptions of his love affair with this quirky mate. "Even the planes unique vibrations, like when the P-39's massive 37mm nose cannon is fired has a mild sexual stimulating feeling for the pilot who is nearly straddling the gun."
August 16, 200816 yr Author I'll look that up. Thanks to your link I also found pacific wrecks website. I have some exploring to do in asia I think. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. August 16, 200816 yr Theres a lot of wrecks in the northen territory. My brother found the old bachelor field i believe. Lots of jap wrecks in the scrub. He found a bomb release mechanism. He also has a almost intact allison v12 engine out of a kittyhawk, that he picked up at a deceased estate sale in oakey. some old bugga kept it under his house. oakey was a major dumping ground for surplus aircraft after the war. Literally 10,000+ aircraft. They all got scrapped.... He wants to do the engine up. I tell him hes dreamin! http://www.pacificwrecks.com/provinces/australia_darwin.html http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://home.st.net.au/~dunn/ozatwar/dump01.jpg&imgrefurl=http://home.st.net.au/~dunn/ozatwar/dumped.htm&h=170&w=246&sz=18&hl=en&start=38&tbnid=YeS7xUq_x3xW4M:&tbnh=76&tbnw=110&prev=/images%3Fq%3Doakey%2Bww2%2Bend%26start%3D36%26gbv%3D2%26ndsp%3D18%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN this is oakey...how sad none of the spits, mustangs ect were saved. They are all worth a million bucks a pop at least now... http://img112.imageshack.us/img112/1263/dumped01ie8.jpg By charger76 Edited August 16, 200816 yr by Chance1
August 16, 200816 yr Author wow thanks for those links!!!! I want to see! He should sell that engine, you can get a lot for it. Seriously, if it's in good shape I would think $20,000 is not unrealistic. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake.
