Posted July 30, 200816 yr Hi Guys, Some time ago on another thread we were talking about good books to read and I recommended Generation Kill by Evan Wright, an embedded Rolling Stones reporter with the Ist Marine Recon on the road to Bagdad in 2003. Well blow me down if HBO haven't produced a mini-series based on the book. I've watched the first three episodes and it is just brilliant. HBO spent the same amount of money on this as they did with The Sopranos but they had the full support of the USMC as well. It is an order of magnitude better than "Over There" (which sucked IMHO). Probably won't appear on our TV for another year or two so do yourself a favour as Molly would say, and go do the search thingy... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_Kill_%28TV_series%29 http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/armouredservice.bmp
July 30, 200816 yr Thanks Bammo, you're a champ. Kind of like a mdern Band of Brothers right? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. July 30, 200816 yr nice one Bammo, going to be doing some d/l tonight For sure. When in trouble or in doubt, RUN IN CIRCLES SCREAM AND SHOUT!!! http://nanourl.net/46e85
July 30, 200816 yr Author Definately on a par with Band of Brothers for production values and acting. The story is told through the reporters eyes so is perhaps less focused on direct combat and more on the daily grind of sitting in a Humvee and stuff like that. If it were written as a fiction script it wouldn't be credible - some of the characters are almost unbelievable such as the moronic company commander "Encino Man" and Charlie Platoon's Captain America. Except they really did behave the way they are portrayed according to the book and to inverviews with the platoon members. The first episode takes some time to get going and the sheer number of different characters can be a bit overwhelming at first but trust me it gets better! Trivia - one of the Recon Marine Scout/Snipers in the book is Corporal Rudy Reyes and he plays himself in the show! http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/armouredservice.bmp

July 30, 200816 yr I watched the first ep last night, pretty good show with some great characters. I like Fruity Rudy "I'm moving to San Francisco because there are no fat people" Classic. Aresnik [WC] Leiutenant Braaaaaaaarp!
July 31, 200816 yr Awww! > I'm up to episode 3 and I'm telling you that I have taken great dislike in a few characters, but not sure what their names are so bare with me. 1.The young lad that sits in the back left beside the reporter of the 1st Humvee at all times who keeps saying " I didn't get to fire my weapon". He just really arks me up to the max with his lines >! 2.The driver of the 1st Humvee at all times, his constant annoying voice tone adding to the stupid lines and singing pisses me off. 3. Seeing a French APC being called a LAV 25 slightly pushed a vain, I mean yeah alright they all might be on serivce but ****! they could have moddified it to LOOK like a LAV 25!! N by any chance did the Iraqis EVER in their history use a T-34 that is seen on the airfield in Episode 3? Brad. July 31, 200816 yr Author Aus - 1) Tromley (the SAW gunner) was a whiny annoying little **** so I thought they captured him perfectly. 2) Corporal Person was likewise perfectly portrayed, yabbered his head off! 3) Can you tell us which scene had the "french APC" in it? I saw genuine LAV's and, of course, the Amtracks which are the primary USMC APC but I don't recall seeing anything faked? You sure you weren't thinking of the Amtracks? Big bastard of an amphibious APC - very common in the USMC but for some strange reason rarely seen/talked about in movies and TV. The burnt out APC on the bridge and in Al Nasiryah were both Amtracks... 4) I didn't see a T34 at the airfield? There were two tanks side by side, one was a T-55 and one was a T-72 (or a T-55 with an updated turret, hard to tell). Where was the T34? There were two tanks side by side, one was a T-55 and one was a T-72 (or a T-55 with an updated turret, hard to tell). Where was the T34? Right, I know what a Amtrack is m8. LAV-25: No the "fake LAV 25" can be seen a number of times for example Episode 2 at 34:38, Look at the front and the length of the vehicle. Im currently trying to find some more and have to go out of the house for a while but will post up some more spots. T-34: Episode 3: At 41:49, Pause it and look at the right hand side of the door as the Marine steps out. Few sec latter you can see a little closer at 41:51 to the left of the Marine. http://members.optushome.com.au/cademan/Aussie.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/infantryofficer.bmp
July 31, 200816 yr Author Hmmm I see what you mean about the LAV-25 - I thought it was a command LAV - the USMC equivilant to our PC ASLAV. No turret etc but I'll bow to your superior trainspotting skills if you say so !!! Given they use actual LAV-25's in the other episodes I can't imagine why this one is a fake? As to the T-34, well yes you are correct in that it is there. I had to pause the video to spot it but there IS a T-34 on the side of the runway along with the T-55 and the T-72. Man you have good eyes! Still, according to Wikipedia there were a number of T34's in Iraqi army service so technically it's presence at the airfield is not actually a boo-boo. Personally, this is the most accurate portrayal of Iraq I have seen on TV so I 'aint going to niggle over a minor detail like that... August 1, 200816 yr Im loving watching these its a great insight to what life can be like in iraq and in the army in general Recon [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/4816/sniper.png http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/opagamahons.jpg
August 5, 200816 yr ive just watched the first the eps, and am watching the fourth one later tonight. im amused and completely pissed of with the attitude of the senior officers in it, i no its a movie, but ****, if they were like that in real life no wonder so many **** ups with blue on blue fire and the like happen. it sorta seems that anyone from captain up seems to kiss ass to the bloke above him rather than do his job. its awesomely well done, and the characters are played out well, must have been a huge budget for production, and apparntly its filmed in south africa. from what ive read in books and seen in not just this series but also band of brothers and the like, my belief that competent NCO's should be given field commissions and taught to lead after serving as NCO's rather than mass producing officers out of academys has been reinforced yet again
