I can't understand how every soldier failed to check their weapons before the exercise.

 

Any time someone hands you a firearm SOP dictates that you check the magazine, breach, and safety. Which would lead you to find FMJs in the mag and chamber would it not?

 

On top of that who loaded their rifles? It would be pretty hard to mistake blanks or simunition for the real deal when loading. Maybe it was deliberate on someones account?

Everyone knows the French militarys greatest weapon is the British military.

Kinda reminds me of that scene from Chucky actually... Where he went in and replaced all the blanks with real ammo, before the training exercise.

Hmmmm utterly incomprehsible. Not only are the blanks completely different in appearance and weight, but you have to have a BFA fitted over the barrel to use them. In the case of the LMG you have a completely different barrel (painted red) fitted!

 

The officer in charge has clearly issued the wrong ammo and then instructed the men to use it. Whether because he went nuts or was stupid enough to not think about the consequences remains to be seen. I wonder if it is a Legion unit? Traditionally their officers are French and the men sometimes don't speak a common language. It could be that?

I agree with Bammo but you don't need the BFA fitted over I have been in a few funeral services when I was in the army we didn't use BFA's when we fired for the 21 gun salute.

 

But the weight of a blank is nothing compared to a live round. Another thing why where they pointing and firing into a crowd. You never fire into a crowd unless they are a threat.
