Anzac Day is commemorated by Australia and New Zealand on 25 April every year to remember members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who landed at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I.

 

In Australia and New Zealand, Anzac Day commemoration features solemn "Dawn Services", a tradition started in Albany, Western Australia on 25 April 1923 and now held at war memorials around both countries, accompanied by thoughts of those lost at war to the ceremonial sounds of The Last Post on the bugle. The fourth stanza of Laurence Binyon's poem For the Fallen (known as the "Ode of Remembrance") is often recited.

 

So on april 25th 2008 everyone should wear the ANZAC tag infront of their name I know I will be.

I think Slavak proved the other night that you can never be too pissed to play PR. Just dont expect to win LOL as the sounds of choppers crashing, incessant giggling and beer bottle whistling tunes kinda make squad comms tricky.

You know, I get where you are coming from mate, but i couldnt wear it myself. I've never served, i never saw my mates die, i'm not an ANZAC. Thats just my own opinion, and i wouldnt bag anyone who did wear the tag. I also have never been comfortable with the descendants of vets marching as well. I think it should just be them. Its their day, not ours.

In my opinion, you shouldn't be wearing an ANZAC tag unless you're a member of the Royal Australian Armed Forces or the New Zealand Armed Forces. You may play a soldier online, but that doesn't give you the right to pretend to be one.

 

Perhaps a "Lest we forget" or something would be more appropriate.

Its also not about claiming your a member of the armed forces or anything slimiler, just about showing your support for the soldiers who died.

a minutes silence or something similar would be appropriate , if you want to remember go to dawn service , if you want to full em full of holes and pump em full of lead play pr .

Yeah got to say I wouldnt be comfortable wearing the tags, not being a member or former member of the ADF. I'll be at the dawn service in ANZAC square in Brissy, thats my bit. As for Ranky up the page a bit, shame on you. I dont care how old you are, ANZAC day is important! Australia day has kinda negative connotations to Aborigines, and Armistice Day applies to everyone. ANZAC day is our own day, commemorating OUR soldiers bravery. So you SHOULD be doing something, regardless of your age.

What the hell do they teach you in school these days? I was attending dawn service when I was 8 years old, and have continued to do so with the exception of last year as I was sick.

 

I'll now be marching in the parades.

 

If you want a lesson in why commemorating ANZAC day is so important, feel free to ask. Don't be surprised if it's extremely colorful and biased, though.

well for the people who want to wear the ANZAC tag good on them for remembering them in there own way. but for others that means dawn services.

as for the comments about me not caring or doing anything on that day i was simplly a person who didnt care about alot of stuff due to reason im not going to go in to.

As a US VET and a life member of the VFW which is the US version of the RSL I think it is great that the Aussies do ANZAC day as we all tend to forget the loss war can cause and the great acts of bravey it shows as well.

 

I have had a few mates injuried and killed in both Desert Storms.

 

As well as experince the empty sound when trying to contact a unit that a Squad had wipred out in Desert Storm 1

 

So take some Time on 25 April to remember all of the Aussie losses and heros

 

If you wear the ANZAC tag good on you for remembering the loss and the heroics of that day.

Coming from a big military family and as an active serving member in the Royal Australian Navy i would have no issue with anyone wearing an ANZAC tag on the day. Just because its there doesn't mean they are trying to be one. How you remember the brave men who served and fell in past wars is up to each individual. As long as they do is all that matters.

It's great to see someone wanted the whole community to try and represent in such a fashion. I think it was a great gesture and shows some pride. I understand both sides of the arguments for family members marching ect. But I believe if someone marches for them then their spirit & memory lives longer.

I think a lot of the people marching for relatives are often marching with thier relatives medals on, which I think is the idea, you know, keeping the medals alive in a sense.

I really don't think it's an issue, if you want to wear the ANZAC tag then I think it's great.

Now if you were wearing it to pretend that your something your not, that's a different kettle of fish but as the discussion is about wearing them to show respect for our diggers I don't think diggers would be offended.

 

It's a show of respect not an attempt to impersonate anyone.

FYI; There are legal implications involved with using the term "ANZAC". Mainly ones which involve imprisonment and fines. And just looking at the acceptable uses which are set out, you don't exactly fall into the two main exemption categories.

While you may not cop either punishments, you will be creating attention for yourselves, which will be noticed.

 

Commemorate sure, but there are better ways to go about it.
