Groan.. Since mid today I have had the following come up. Not sure whether some Virus or hardware fault, but my son was working on the computer beforehand.

Have tried chkdsk fix which takes a fair while and then starts up, but then get further errors. Am going to do a Virus scan (ZoneAlarm v7), but thinking best bet might be to get another large drive, transfer fiels and reinstall windows.

My some (on same network) had a couple of viruses (Trojan horse DOwnloader and generic in C:\Windows files.

 

Anyone come across this and other posts seem to have mixed sucess of fixing and not much that I could find out!

People have any luck with System Restore points in the past. I have mixed feelings about them.

Is hard for me to run Hard Drive diagnostics as they are RAID striped.

Never heard of it before actually... all the google links come up with troubleshooting but no solutions... Whrilpool doesn't seem to have anything, maybe you could post it in the windows section and might get someone to lend a hand.

Yeah.. Just looking up some of the viruses that were on my sons PC. Infect other PCs, open ports for remote attacks, etc.. Nasty, he had about 4 different variants (had stopped AVG for a while to play BF2 - better performance and had left it off while surfing and DLing.. groan. Time to block his internet again!

Better yet, take every obscene synonym for body parts and use router-level URL filtering... it'll at least slow them down. Also, limewire/music P2P are a no-no, because kids can't tell the difference between:

Good news!!

After chkdsk ran for abour 3 hrs, restarting once, all looks good so far. When I had tried this earlie rin the day, I had selected BAd Sector scan as well and had to abort it, but had only let it run about an hour or so. Seems patience is needed with these bigger harddrives. I have been reading up on external HD, so will probably pick up a 500GB one (not sure whether USB2 or eSATA?), as I currently only have an 80GB HD in the box that I backup to, and would like one that I can disconnect for safekeeping.

 

My router is DLink DSL G604T, the type iiNet used to use I think, although I bought it independent. I had a couple of goes previously to let all traffic from my PC but only certain ports from kids computer, but could not quite get the allow/deny rules to kick in right. Think I was close, but now the router hangs whenever I try and pull the filter page up - needs a hard reset I think. Don't think I have options for URL filtering.

 

Limewire, Miro, various Net TV packages, uTorrent, I've had to get rid of them all at various stages, mainly due to using up my quota! Eldest son is sht hot with the computer but gets sucked into cracked stuff and keygen's, etc without due caution. Heh, one holiday when he was 9 he hacked into smartcard computer at caravan park we were staying at, removed the autostart task and proceeded to setup accounts for all his new found friends.. Manager couldn't appreciate the brilliance of that one.

 

Anyway, out of the crap for the present, fingers crossed. Thanks for looking! Hope to never see that message again.

 

Psyrus.. Yeah.. looking forward to "those talks" with my son when he comes across the seedier side of the web. It's just so much more accessible than when I was a kid and no age limit apart from parents being savy enough to monitor and lock it down a bit.

Basically your NTFS file system was damaged at a low level and only option was to chkdsk. There are some S/W packages out I have used before to recover data from terminally damaged NTFS disks but in this case you got lucky!!

 

And yes a bad sector scan can take a very long time on a big disk but it will identify if the physical disk has been damaged - did you get any reported bad sectors in the chkdsk report?

With chkdsk running, it was mostly spamming literally thousands of "inserting index entry into index $0 of file 25" - probably spent over 1.5 hrs with these scrolling off the screen. Think there were some other entries the first time I ran it also. Spent a fair time checking indexes afterwards also. Chkdsk rebooted at some stage and continued on??

I'm still not fully happy with the viruses my son had and whether it may be linked. One of the 5 was..

Might set full AV scan off tonight. Possibly a sector scan one night (500GB though!)

Go to Event Viewer - Application - and look for an entry called "winlogon" immediately after the chkdsk was run - if you select that entry you will find the result of the chkdsk - just check the summary and see if any bad sectors were reported.

I have also seen this same failure when PC's have been the process of writing to a disk and the power fails - just depends were it is on the disk when the heads retract as to what it overwrites on the disk.

 

Usually a virus either damages/modifies files or completely formats the disk - not saying you don't have other problems just it may not be directly related to the viruses found.
