Just got myself a brand new PC - which came with Vista Home Premium.

While installing BF2, I got "This application has only been tested under WinXP"

Anyone here running BF2/PR on Vista Home without issues?

If you wants teh vista you can haz teh vista .

But you will find it performs 10-20% less in gaming. If its an uber computer you wont really notice it but if its something a bit more mainstream you might like to consider installing xp instead. youll get better fps and overall stablity. vista is good and new and shinny but xp has over 6 years of bug fixing and tweakage.

Then of course there is Linux ?

Fallenplate - your words ring true to me!

I've used Linux professionally since 1996. And I'll be happy to overwrite this OEM-bloat Vista install with a streamlined XP home, but I was curious to what the punters had to say about it!!

:fans:

Vista = theshista

In the middle of killing off Noompsi's Vista right now - it SUCKS

i just go for the haxed xp

but yea vista is ****

you could make it run faster by going control panel, system, advance, performance, settings, adjust for best performance

Ive got vista, have had problems, nothing I havent been able to fix. Works fine in pr..

Just run everything as admin.

Just bought a new rig and the shop offered me an OEM Vista deal and I think I said words to the effect of "but I want it to run BETTER after the upgrade".

If I had had an option to get XP instead, I definitely would have chosen XP. And the amount of bloat that Dell puts on their installs is absolutely ridiculous. I've since looked up Vista tweaking guides and turned off 50% of the garbage whichi is on by default (eg before I started, 1.5GB of RAM in use OUT OF THE BOX, now down to 650MB), the box no longer takes 5 minutes to start up.

Regarding running PR on Vista - its running fine at around 60 - 90 fps everything set to highest settings inc AA on 1920 x 1200 (the Nvidia 8800GT is a schweet video card). Hasn't improved my hit rate though! :cowboy:

Will play around with hardware Antialiasing and Antistropic settings to see what difference it makes, and post my results here.

Haha, to true. XP is just so much better. Faster, more stable, more tweekable. Plus the fact that it doesnt ask you if its ok to do something every 3 seconds.

with any new OS it will always have problems on release its just a fact of life but with a few weeks and a few downloaded patches and it will run fine. this is with any OS

reason i wont touch vista is becuase its full or crap

Well good luck and enjoy old technology then.. lol

Fear is another word for weakness.

Yeah - I have early-upgraded with every new OS release since DOS 3.3 and in each case, the new OS has been so much better to use than the old that I have put up with the bugs and patch issues with no complaint.

Vista though, well that is just something different. I tried and tried to like it but it just ****s me to tears. Everything runs slower, everything is harder to do, the tweaks are harder, the networking is stupidly restrictive and it just doesn't offer me any reason to upgrade. I *like* XP, it works for me, I don't notice any benefit to my user experience in Vista so why would I want to use it?

I mean I liked Win98SE as well but as soon as XP came out I could see the benefit, I just don't with Vista. Plus the Borg Collective's (MS) approach to it is pissing me off. Noompsi bought a Compaq PC (HP) the other day from Harvey Norman. We got fedup with the Vista performance so blew it away for XP.

Guess what? The motherboard manufacturer only supports Vista - even the onboard LAN chip from Realtek is a special model that is specifically for Vista only and the same thing applies to all the other services. It seems that this is the new model with "off the shelf" computers - they have a deal going with Microsoft to restrict people being able to run XP in order to flog more Vista machines.

The evil empire isn't normally my whipping boy but in this case I HATE it!

yes by in a few years i will probably have to move to vista but ill just us xp most of the time

and dont forget there will be people out there that will just hax up the new game or directX 10 and make XP usable by any new programs

but hopefully by then ive rage quit windows and moved to linux

I have Vista & apart from some teething problems It works fine... Make sure you have Vista drivers for everything....EVERYTHING I Say!!!!

If you cant get a driver for it then get rid of it (SB 5.1 was my bug bear)

at least a gig of ram for PR & run your user account as admin..... Also be prepared to manualy update punkbuster by using the pbsetup program & get hold of the pbsvc.exe to test & enable the pb services through the firewall of defender...

If you run teamspeak... get it & anything else you want to run... up prior to running PR...

Works fine with me on a AMD64 x2 3200+

Lets face it... if its microsoft...XP, 2000 ME, NT or Vista... you will have problems of some discription.... Frustration is built in to the code...:)

CaptAndy,

I appreciate that Vista can (eventually) be made to behave and most of us will be running at least 2GB of ram anyway but the bit that I am genuinely perplexed about is this:

What is the actual benefit to the user of having Vista over XP?

http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/armouredservice.bmp

There is none at all bammo....

I have allways been of the belief that "if it aint broke dont fix it"

I was more than happy & familiar with XP pro, but, when your wife gets you vista home premium for 40th B'Day.... is much safer to install it & like it :)...

Would you agree??

Sure but it's like your 200GB pr0n collection...have XP installed on a separate partition and dual boot into it when she's not looking.

Is it an AMD X2 3600/3800+ or a AMD 3200+, because afaik there was never a X2 3200+?

QFT: Your computer is smart man. It tells you not to play the second worst PR map [burning Sands] (first is Wanda Shan).

QFT: if you dont get pissed off when you lose you dont care enough

What is the actual benefit to the user of having Vista over XP?

It looks more pretties......:)

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
