Re: Street Fight Tonight! Open to all who want in.

I'll set up another small maps night and make a booking in a bit. I will be offline for a short while as I'm moving and I have to get a phone line and internet hooked up.

That reminds me, time to call Telstra.

Whatever you do, don't get suckered in to bigpond ADSL or cable... 2 year contracts FTL (not to mention the worst value on the planet)

Re: Street Fight Tonight! Open to all who want in.

I did I did, 95 a month for ADSL2 - I'll be on the plan for 15 months and getting out for $15 a month for the remaining is not bad.

Can you tell me why I made a bad choice? I was going to go with internode but for the same amount of money I got the fast internet speed I wanted as well as a mobile and long distance land line plan.

Now I'm nervous, why should I have gone with Optus?

Re: Street Fight Tonight! Open to all who want in.

They are all the same can't guarantee anything over the standard 1.5 that telstra has to legally provide and even then area, geographic and technological constraints can affect that.

I'm on ADSL2 with ............ and I was getting 30 k up and 150 k down the other day after complaining about why my internet dropped out for a day and a half I got reconnected at 1440 k and was told my problem was fixed.

With telstra it's their lines you can hassle them a bit more than an independant adsl provider but they still are reluctant to do anything

Independants tend to feed you BS to avoid having to do anymore as the believe that alsong as they provide you with 1.5 there is no problem, if you say I may as well go elsewhere they say but we are cheaper.

They all try to scare you with it will cost you if its not our fault , so they will come to your house charge you $200 to play with your phone lines all the while its the fact that you have a crap connection to the exchange but they aren't going to pay telstra to do anything..

ADSL2 in South Australia is a joke some people are lucky and if you live in the right place you will get a good connection most people are lucky to get 2000-4000 k .... 200 k d/l speed not what I call adsl2

Re: Street Fight Tonight! Open to all who want in.

You went with telstra?

How much are you paying and how small is your data limit going to be? Uploads included?

I'd get it connected or at least provisioned then cancel within their set number of days limit and go with someone else. That way the line will be able to be connected elsewhere straight away.

After all that thread asking for advice you went with the company no one even mentioned (or if they did they would have said not to use them).

What were you thinking? :p

Re: Street Fight Tonight! Open to all who want in.

12G download, upload? What do I need it for?

I will pay $94 a month for mobile plus free phone, land line with international plan and the 30 something speed...

Man now I feel like I made a mistake!!

Re: Street Fight Tonight! Open to all who want in.

Because to download stuff you need to UPLOAD the requests.

12GB is probably enough..but I hope you don't use torrents. I struggle with 60GB. Jebus.

It's probably an okay deal with the phone etc...but mergh..

I pay $70 for 60GB, 10mbit connection (only 30kb upload, but the download is insane). Probably around $90 including both phone lines too...

Re: Street Fight Tonight! Open to all who want in.

For the internet itself, it's good though right?

I torrent, but not much so I'll be okay. I'll just download at the end of the month.

How much upload will I need?

Re: Street Fight Tonight! Open to all who want in.

depends on how much you actually upload....if you upload 6 gb in the month, it means you can only download 6gb

make sense?

Whos that with? $70 for 60gig on 10mbit.

Fear is another word for weakness.

Re: Street Fight Tonight! Open to all who want in.

Hmm.. Telstra rang me up the other night trying to talk me into cable (currently with iiNet) for $59 a month for 4Mbps and 12GB. The sales guy didn't know jack (surprise) and he never rang back when he was going to.. I'm hesitant to jump to ships unless sure..

Optusnet cable.

1.2mb/sec all day long is sweet. None of this ADSL network slowdown/mustbexkm'sfromtheexchange crap!

Phone, and a few other things are bundled in. I'm actually lying when I say it costs $70...it actually only costs $10 cos work pays $60 of my net bill.

Best internet plan in town :plane:

Re: Street Fight Tonight! Open to all who want in.

Yeah its optus cable.

1200+kbps (ie 1.2megabytes/sec) downstream, 30kbps upstream (more would be nice, but I can deal with it)

I've hit 1.4mb/sec on good days

Re: Street Fight Tonight! Open to all who want in.

Mine is with telstra,1056/256 .12 gig then slowed

$34 a month..

Yeah see in Adelaide cable was rolled out around the city suburbs then they rolled it back up in some places, so no cable support where I live, dunno about others but the best I've heard of on ADSL2 is 1620 kbs but thats 1 person everyone else I know of is lucky to get between 200-400 kbs

Re: Street Fight Tonight! Open to all who want in.

I've got a mate who is less than 50m from his exchange...gets around 2mb/sec which is pretty nice, only has like 20GB though so he could do it in half a day if he wanted to..eheh

Re: Street Fight Tonight! Open to all who want in.

Graunch,

I live in Adelaide and get ~4.2mbs (on a bad day) on ADSL2 and I live about 3km from the exchange (as the crow flys). If your getting such a low d/l speed there are numerous things that could be causing it. Hand held phones, line quality, filters, house alarms etc.

Yeah I had the techs come out and do the central splitter rewire every connection in the house and then run a direct port from the main box so I only have the one phone port with adls2, problem is at the outside socket the tech was only getting 2500 odd anyways...

So now I'm on to telstra to see if I can get something done, probably cost me an arm and a leg but.

Sorry Admin

Re: Street Fight Tonight! Open to all who want in.

Hmm this is getting a little off topic lets either bring it back to the original threads topic or start another other wise I will lock it and someone can start a more appropriately named thread about ISP providers and deals.

Sorry about that. Just a suggestion though, rather than locking the thread can an admin split the thread into two different topics?

An admin can delete this post if they wish as it was an off topic suggestion.

Re: Street Fight Tonight! Open to all who want in.

Can you do that admin? Would be rad!

Re: Street Fight Tonight! Open to all who want in.

Just an update Spawnsta I had the telstra tech out this morning and after he came in and checked the home phone he went back to the exchange to disconnect my Isp to see if that was the problem.

He makes a call and finds out that there was a fault listed on the house a year ago, my wiring at the exchange is wrong and that the pit out the front of my house was suppose to be replaced but the account that the fault was with was closed before it happened.

Hopefully this will fix my ADLS2 problem and I will get better speed.

Good to hear. The best thing is that becuase it is the pit Telstra pay the full charge.

Yeah we'll seem's you have to keep hassling to get anything done..

I would pay to get a better connection (for an awesome connection I'd give up a kidney hahahaha)
