OK,

Spent a very frustrating time last night installing my new mobo/cpu/ram:

it is GA-P35-DQ6/e6700/generic 2gb DDR2 RAM

- system initially didn't recognise my IDE DVD Drive with my two HDDs. But I think I got this sorted by mucking with it for a while (sigh!)...the mobo seems to call everything IDE, even SATA HDD;

- now it restarts either at windows or just after entry to windows.

I used both 1gb RAM sticks separately, same thing.

Temps of CPU in BIOS looked fine, so I asume it is not overheating.

Would this indicate I probably need a complete windows reinstall?

There is another little square power plug that plugs into the MB...Think its called atx power or whatever... comes from the power supply to tyhe MB... check to see if you have it plugged in as this can cause a simular problem if forgotten...

(I'm assuming Windows XP here, Vista is similar for all of this)

In short, what happens is the existing windows installation has drivers for what was there before, those drivers don't work after the hardware changes and it results in a BSOD or hard reboot.

If you have kept your drives/windows installation from a previous motherboard, you'll either need to do a complete fresh install of windows or a "repair installation". http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

Repair install is quicker (no reinstalling apps afterwards) and usually works ok, but leaves some crap behind and usually breaks SP2 and IE7 if they're not on your XP install disc. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917964

No better time for a fresh install than a hardware upgrade :)

This is the ATX12V power connector which supplies power for the CPU. Most boards will not even get to the BIOS if this isn't connected and usually get a a "no CPU installed" PC speaker beep code.

Yep... What he said :)

Thanks for the advice - I was fearing that was the case.

Looks like its a fun night of XP repair and/or formatting. Oh Joy! :)

I never really struck a consistant hard reboot issue before, found it unnerving to say the least. Thought it would be better for your hardware to get BSOD?

i think its if you change 5 or more hardwere devices windows and probley most OS will have a cry like your computer
idiots are hardcoded

also you said that you mobo calls sata ide,

you dont have your system installed on a ide drive and a sata in at same time ???

because this isnot recomended and if you do it its best to have the os on the sata and the ide as storage

Currently the Score in the battle of Wok vs computer is:

-Dead (new) DDR2 RAM Stick = 1 (causing random errors during boot)

-old primary HDD that suddenly won't read or format = 1 (disk read error message)

-apparent driver conflict when I went back to my old setup in frustration = 1 (random errors in windows now that its going on my secondary HDD)

-WAF (Wife acceptance factor) = -10 and dropping

I'm hoping things will begin to improve so that I can play PR again by friday...

Nothing worst than a screwed up PC.I feel for you m8...

And as for the WAF,sometimes they just don't understand do they......:).

WAF never reaches an acceptable peak till you roll over like a good little doggy.

Bought new HDD and RAM today, hoping to be back at PR this week.

*Crosses fingers*

After more experimentation I think there may have been driver issues also making the going tough, and the dropouts seem even more stochastic (my word of the week). "That guy is sooo stochastic".

From experiences such as yours wokeye, every upgrade I automaticly do a full format & rebuild of the op system... reduces the overall time & frustration levels of what in reality should be a joyus moment in time...

I think im gonna get a new PC this weekend.

Ergh. Just not sure what to do. Q6600, or E6850. Why can't they just have duals or quads...not both. Dilemna.

id go the dual core as its top of the range at the moment for that type whereas the quads are still in their infancy.

And the new cpus come out after christmas so prices will drop and other more powerful quads will come out

just make sure your motherboard can support both types (there are a few out) and then you can upgrade in the future.

http://www.madhouseau.com/misc/sigs/darthsig.jpg

Yeah the motherboard im going to be using with a bios upgrade will support the new Penryns.

I'm only going to have the CPU until they come out too, so im thinking Dual core for the time being. Now everyone better have stock of what I want or there will be tears. :(

cause they idiots and they release crap to make it look like they have advanced technologies but its all about reinventing they same old stuff..

Give us something real and new.

I myself am looking to upgrade and will probably stick to dual as quad seems like twaddle to me..
